♡ 93 ( +1 | -1 ) POSTAL-players' REUNION ...Before coming to Gameknot (aka 'seeing the light' :)) I played my corr Chess by Postal Mail, and naturally met a lot of good players and good fellows too, in the process. But now with NIKnames (aka handles, or pseudonyms) being so common, its often hard to know just who you have played or not. And even who is onsite with you. I miss being able to chat and play a lot of those met during my Postal Chess days. That is why I started this thread.... The purpose here being to give us former POSTAL CHESS players a chance to speak up and "find each other" again. So if you played any postal, I would really like to hear from you here about where you played, and any experiences you would care to share, or stories of special friends met in Postal, etc. Tho all that is not necessary, just hearing that you are Now Here, at GK, and Where you played Before would be GREAT~! I'll start with my own info next.
♡ 72 ( +1 | -1 ) My Organizations played ...Organizations played: USCF, APCT, APCT Electro, Leisure Linc, ICCF International & 8th USCCC, Iowa State Postal Chess (Championship), Illinois Chess Fed for one event. Are any of you guys still out there?
Postal and every form of Correspondence play has always been great for meeting people of the Chess world, of all types and varied contributions to the game. That has always been the most enjoyable aspect to me, tho the play ain't so bad either :)) It really interests me to hear about others' experiences in Postal play. Everyone, not just those I met there. I guess Postal holds a special place in my memories, having been a time of my greatest IMMERSION into the game of Chess.
♡ 32 ( +1 | -1 ) I played postal chess for....many years with the USCF. My max rating was 2187 but that was a few years back. I am still playing in USCF Golden Knights but I am taking on a lot less games.
I played with the APCT, ICCF, NOST, and a few others.
As I said I am winding down in many games. Not taking on as much anymore.
♡ 41 ( +1 | -1 ) 30 years!? of postalI played postal for 30 years with USCF; 25 years with APCT (Helen Warren is still my favorite organizer); 20+ years with CCLA (an officer for lots of that); ICCF and a variety of now defunct orgs like Zugszwang! (anyone remember that?) My best play was in the early to mid-80s, when I made APCT's top-whatever list, before my body started betraying me .... :). Clark
♡ 49 ( +1 | -1 ) I started playing postal.....chess in 1957. I got the little post cards and stamp kit from the USCF. The stamp kit was a rubber stamp for each piece and on every post card we would imprint the position.
What fun that was!! :-(
In the ICCF my first games were lost because of the notation they were using.
Numeric notation!! A move may be 1142 I thought I was playing battleship!! I had never seen that notation nor do I ever want to see it again.
♡ 93 ( +1 | -1 ) good to meettwo more Postalites. Of course I knew Chuck played. (Hey you stole my line! I quit APCT because of Helen! But an otb Expert I know got her back for us ... convincing her not only to take a draw while winning, but that she was in a lost position... :)) I think that was L.C.s line too, actually. Who I do remember from there but believe I had just missed Chuck as I stopped very early 90's I think it was. But took a slight + vs the top 30 with me too, in non-Helen interfered games ... take that Big H~! :)) I'm glad GK is perfect! :)
I have heard that the old APCT is no more tho?! At least the 'fuhrers fav' JFC wrote a last column for it. So it Must be true, eh?! Oh well. The players there were really great tho, for the most part.
Now I have a mystery, I bet we know each other then ironbutterfly !? Chuck and I just missed there it seems, but surely we did not with your 25 year span.
♡ 44 ( +1 | -1 ) notefuhrer's fav does not in anyway denote genocide nor disappearing players, (well okay APCT players did disappear), but just a certain heavy handed, pehaps little tiny bit paranoid, in a nonclinical sense anyway, heavy handed leadership style, IMO. :)) But thats been decades ... would I bear a grudge?! True I won't by a certain brand of foreign car, but APCT didnt build equipment to strike the USA , well as far as I know ... }8-))
♡ 28 ( +1 | -1 ) I apologize forposting in poor taste. Sorry about that. It has been a very long day. Anyway, I think APCT is defunct. And TCC went defunct while right in the middle of the NTC team event in the USA. I think CCLA is still going!? I surely hope so. Regards all, Craig
♡ 71 ( +1 | -1 ) postal orgsWell, Craig, "de gustibus non disputantum est," or something like that. :) [And if you think Helen was a heavy-handed TD, you never belonged to CCLA and entered Jerry Honn's realm, did you? lol He enforced the club rules, though. And do I have some heavy-handed USCF stories - if I could just remember who ran postal before Joan Dubois, and what he did at the Paul Masson Class in '74 ..... but I have a story or two about her, too ....lol.] Anyway, I'm Clark Mayo, if that rings any bells. And you're right about APCT being defunct, though I'm told some events are still finishing up; I can't believe CCLA will live much longer, since they don't seem to want to join the electronic age.
♡ 165 ( +1 | -1 ) I do not remember who....ran the USCF CC before Joan Dubois and Stephanie Colley but I do know that the CC portion of the USCF is beginning to be pushed out or so it seems.
I have had a few emails from Alex Dunne that indicated CC is losing favor in the USCF.
Never belonged to the CCLA but I did and do belong to the IECG but have not played much lately.
I belonged to the IECC for about 5 years and was the TD for the 2 Game match, KO and Swiss. I dropped out of that when it seemed that turned it into a corporation with all the politics that go with it.
There are many chess sites on the web and some are being "weeded out" because either they do not want to "upgrade" or have simply lost out to the sites with servers.
Has anyone ever belonged to NOST? Knights of the Square Table!! Did a long time back.
What bothers me most about email play in the USCF and other orgs is that the people that played postal and switched to email still wanted to use the postal format. That is they would send 2 moves on each transmission when it is so much easier and better to simply reply to the email and keep the integrity of the enite game by sending all moves with each transmission.
I suggested to many of these "old heads unencumbered by progress" that maybe it was better to write the moves on the monitor and mail the monitor back and forth. Makes almost the same sense as sending just 2 moves. :-)
I am losing interest in email chess and postal chess [high post card rates and slow people". But like always I will keep a few games going for old times sake.
♡ 58 ( +1 | -1 ) As an outsider...... looking in, I see there are a lot of interesting skeletons lying half-buried in these postings! Tell us more. I played a bit of CC in this country for a few years in the early to mid-1970s, with fair success (I even still have my NZCCA lapel badge). Tended to find it a bit time-consuming, though, and was forced to quit whilst doing a computer course in Wellington. Probably could have picked it up again later, but never was tempted. I suspect the miniatures wargames had something to do with that... I've just finished scratchbuilding my Austrian 12-pdr field guns... :-) Ion
♡ 51 ( +1 | -1 ) Postal was my life...Wow, I read these posts and the nostalgia broke over me in waves...
...screwed up notation that absolutely lost your game for you. ICCF was bad in that...
...bulk buying postcards and "pretty coloured" stamps for the international collectors who badgered you into collecting also.
...the Nazis who insisted on getting their replies on ICCF's funky looking post cards (I still have a bunch of those); the USCF cards weren’t bad though.
...humm, maybe those waves are nausea.
♡ 10 ( +1 | -1 ) Hey! any idea what happend to the FORUM tab?...I don't have one. Then I realized I surfed in off Google to get here.
I wonder what I'm doing wrong?
♡ 2 ( +1 | -1 ) The forum tab.....is on the left and all the way at the bottom.
♡ 14 ( +1 | -1 ) Nope, not there...Chuck, I really don't have the tab "on the left, at the bottom." Matter of fact, until I surfed in directly, I did not know GK had a forum as the tab had never appeared.
♡ 4 ( +1 | -1 ) OK, found it...GK folks told me how to get to it..."more options"
