Two Win Diminished Chess Crowns — Boris Spassky, the future world chess champion, was once world junior champion. So were Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov and Viswanathan Anand, the current world chess champion. It used to be that the world junior championship was an important stepping stone for chess players who had dreams of becoming the best in the world. No longer. While the junior championship, which is open to participants 20 years old or younger, still draws talented chess players, the best of them usually skip the event because they are already among the world’s elite. Among those who were eligible to play this year, but did not, are Magnus Carlsen of Norway, No. 1 in the world; Sergey Karjakin of ...

Steinitz's Immortal Chess Game — Enough is enough and you throw in the towel. That's the elegant way to give up in boxing. In chess, there are more ways of resigning a game before you get actually mated. The manner Curt von Bardeleben did it 115 years ago during the legendary chess tournament at the English seaside resort of Hastings, still generates controversy. Having been brilliantly outplayed by William Steinitz, the German count got up from his chair, left the chess tournament hall and disappeared in the streets. Consequently, he lost on time. Von Bardeleben was playing the tournament of his life and in the first nine rounds went undefeated, scoring six wins and three draws. Could a single loss upset him so ...

The middlegame: The art of a successful attack — A lesson in creative aggression from Luke McShane. Over the last few weeks we have concentrated on the technical precision of endings, and by contrast we now move to a much messier phase of the game of chess – the middlegame and, more specifically, attacking. Often, the knack in playing a successful attack is finding an idea that throws your opponent off balance. Subsequent analysis might prove the idea unsound – in recent years that has frequently happened, with every master move scrutinised by strong computer chess programmes. But so what? Machine analysis is a world away from a competitive situation where the chess clock is ticking and the defender knows that one slip will be ...

For Top Seeds, No Guarantee of Victory, or Success — In a sport like tennis, it is not unusual to see a top seed win a tournament. But in chess, the margin between a No. 1 seed and most of the field is often small, and the top chess player is usually not the prohibitive favorite. Three chess tournaments that ended last weekend illustrated that rule, and the exceptions. The British Chess Championships was won by Michael Adams, who has been one of the top chess players in the world for 15 years and was in the Top 10 as recently as three years ago. When the tournament began, Adams outranked his nearest competitor by 150 rating points, which is more than a whole class better. He finished 1.5 points ahead of the No. 2 seed — a margin ...

Alejandro Ramirez wins US Open — Chess Grandmaster Alejandro Ramirez of Costa Rica won the 111th U.S. Open in Irvine last Sunday. Ramirez, a recent graduate of the University of Texas at Dallas, yielded draws only to top-seeded GM Varuzhan Akobian and his former UTD teammate, IM Julio Catalino Sadorra. His 8-1 score included a victory against GM Melikset Khachiyan and a crucial eighth-round upset of GM Alexander Shabalov. Akobian, Sadorra, Shabalov and 14-year-old chess phenom Daniel Naroditsky shared second place at 7 1/2-1 1/2. Southern Californians Khachiyan, IM Andranik Matikozyan, IM Enrico Sevillano, masters Joel Banawa, Matthew Beelby, Ankit Gupta and Bryan Williams Paulsen and top expert Vanessa West ...

checked your game out and you had a pretty good game against this guy. also want to let everyone know i had a nice conversation with mark on the phone, he has called me several times as has ty (dok) our friendships on this team dont have to end on the screen. i know everyone has their own comfort zone in areas like this but i encourage all of you to pick one or two people and try your best to develop a friendship with this person. friendships develop from common interest and we all love chess, but you never know when you will have even more in common. if you dont take just a little effort and try to develop a few friendships here you are really missing out on a great opportunity. i try to stay as close as possible to each of you although its hard to do. you may not feel comfortable talking to team members on the phone but i encourge you to at least develop a friendship with at least one team member. this may sound silly to some of you but time passes fast in this life and before you know it you may have a friend for years to come. i dont want to sound like im complaining because im not. i thank each of you for your dedication to this team and your efforts here, i dont say things like this because im unsatisfied but because i truly want you all to get the most from your team. we have so much to offer as a group, let take advantage of it :) go bounty hunters!!!!!!! :)

muppyman, once when travelling..

Message:
in Syria I had a game in this little desert township. I thought the game was going pretty well although rather two dimensionally. My opponent would place his pieces, a knight or bishop say, in a swappable position whereby I would gain a small but important positional advantage. So it was a relatively bloody and fast battle, and it was apparent he wasn't too happy about losing his pieces albeit in equal swaps. But as the game unfolded and it looked like I had a distinct advantage my opponent abruptly stopped playing and started putting all the pieces away. I asked what he was doing - he flew into a bit of a rage sayingthat i didn't know the rules and that he had therefore won!

I've never forgotten that game ...it still rankles me a little that he could think that a style of play he wasn't comfortable with meant that I didn't know how to play.

Back to chess, I'm going to confess I'm about to lose to a guy that's rated in the low 1200s and he's on this team. I figure I'd better say something before he gets on here and razzes me about it. Still, he's the only one that's beaten me on this team. Yes, that's a challenge. No it's not, I'm just kiddin'. I would like to play some more of you if I get the chance.

Message:
if every person on the team joins heres what the brackets would look like. round 1 grandphish, jordian, me, ctrl-reset and muppyman. bracket two would be julianlore, chimane, sxyvoice, chupacabra, and flyerguy. bracket three..cliffontas snowdog, lazarus ronlumm, vesa. bracket four.. cathleya, markallen, neeta, deadofknight, peterf, bracket five a professional idiot, archadl, richardwyles, redpawn, trond. bracket six.. carpe diem, terrabull, sonofcaissa, breakerofwind, daddysgirl. this seeding method is to ensure the highest players have the best chance of meeting. doesnt mean they will but give them the best chance. of course these brackets are only if everyone joins and is just an example. some will be too busy im sure so the brackets will change depending on who joins. the top winners will go to round two (championship round) any questions feel free to ask.
