Message: Just for a bit of fun I have posted eleven games, which I think were the best in May. Stonkie will be picking the top three games.
KLDR v Appolox
-> gameknot.com
KLDR won a number of games in May. Picking the best of these was difficult, but against Appolox watch the way the position is built up and despite his opponent trying to exchange pieces to break the stranglehold, KLDR keeps his opponent under pressure the whole match.
Vixen v Mario2king
-> gameknot.com
Vixen like KLDR won a lot of games in May so rating the best can be difficult. At move fourteen this game is even, then Vixen launches a series of movies, which leaves his opponent utterly destroyed. Just nine moves later the game is over.
Jivko v JMoreno
-> gameknot.com
The eleventh of May was a day for some great results and this game is no exception. As the match moves into the final endgame Jivko gains the vital pawn advantage. To win from this position is often difficult however Jivko holds the advantage to close a really great endgame.
Transdromeda v Davidjohncameron
-> gameknot.com
How did Transdromeda win this? Always taking the more adventurous moves Transdromeda continually makes running in this match. However the fortunes of the game change from move to move. Towards the end of the match Transdromeda looks in deep trouble until she uses the three free pawns to force the victory.
Comcicomca v Azazel
-> gameknot.com
A great win by Comcicomca. The higher the standard of chess the more the game becomes a battle of minds. A war of attrition. Towards the end of the game Comcicomca finds himself at a slight disadvantage, however with some great tactical manoeuvring traps his opponent’s knight and gains a decisive advantage.
Amigic v Evagere
-> gameknot.com
Amigic is one of the best players on gameknot. Against higher rated players he has some great success and this match is another demonstration of this. The complexity of the moves is too much for the mortals of this world, but this was fantastic victory. Amigic builds up the position gaining space and positional advantage, eventually his opponent cracks and Amigic takes full advantage.
Ldog1976 v Aussiefled
-> gameknot.com
Many players who sacrifice a queen for a castle will end up on the losing side. Ldog1976 turns this on its head, and lands a crushing blow to his opponent. This was the first of four victories against the same player.
Orenh v Chatrantrov2000
-> gameknot.com
Some great tactic play in the middle of the game gives Orenh the advantage in this match. A really good example of how to play the mid part of a match.
Sirmalz v Kasporovfan
-> gameknot.com
Sirmalz had a few good chess matches in May. In this match there some really good use of the pieces both for trapping his opponent and some strong defence. In particular look at the way the knights are use to great effect to open up the heart of the opponents defence.
Liverpool v Foreverdelayed
-> gameknot.com
Liverpool has been accumulating points for the team. This game against foreverdelayed is in my opinion one of his best. Some really solid moves in the middle of the game gets him that vital pawn advantage, before forcing that advantage home.
Hunwi v Kingstrint
-> gameknot.com
Finally Hunwi who again had a number of big wins in May. This is one from his selection, as completely overwhelms his opponent.
Apologies if the links dont work, will get this sorted for next month. This took alot longer than I expected.

lol, en passent - when a pawn moves for the first time and it moves 2 squares, the other pawn may take the pawn that moved for the first time by moving 1 field diagonally to the field the other pawn passed, directly after the move has been made (not 2 moves after or more...)
Something that simple I can explain in such a manner you won't know your ups from your downs, while asking yourself: "What just happend and why did it have to happen to me?" (just ignore my constant ramblings if they annoy you, I can nearly elevate talking about absolutely nothing to a sport if I would want to, but I never do...)
en passent is French for "while passing". This silly rule has a history: in the early days of chess pawns could only move 1 square ahead from their starting position. So the games went: 1. e3, e6 2. e4, e5 the players got bored of this and decided that the pawn henceforth could move 2 squares ahead from their starting position. (this saved them a lot of time) However, now a pawn from it's starting position (2nd or 7th row) could pass pawns on the 4th or 5th row, without being hit. So they thought up this patching-rule. Pretty silly if you ask me...
If you didn't know this then you might not know:
* if a pawn gets on the other side of the board you don't have to ask for a queen (sometimes asking for something else is better!)
* if your king is in check you can't castle
* if your king has to move over a field where it would be in check to castle, it can't castle.
* if your rook is under attack, you CAN castle (some silly GM's still hesitate about this... silly people)
* if your rook has to move over a field where it would be under attack, you CAN castle. (again some silly GM's)
*if your king or rook have moved you can't use them for castling.
And for all you checkersfans, when your opponent cannot move any piece and he isn't in check, you haven't won, but it's a tie (stalemate)
Here to annoy (and sometimes educate) you all,
Rick.

Message: Thank you very much for your complements pete.
However I would like to mention that I tend to have luck in my games
(suddenly opponent is giving a piece away...) .
Moreover, I tend to loose games on time technically
(especially in better positions...).
Worst of all, it takes me milion of years to move (I guess you can think about something good if it takes a week to think of ...) - nobody have too much time
these days.
One thing I did learn during the years is something small and I find it useful:
Attack. It is more fun, and you can't win without it. (even in defence a Mate
is required for winning).
So, if you think you have advantage you must find attacking moves (prepare, build force, aim, take space, combination, get open lines/diagonals, etc. ). If you can't find anything - you may not have the intiative and have look out.
When defending - look for counter attacks all the time.
Also, don't listen too much to me - you may find yourself (like I do many times)
not understanding what I want ...
Enjoy,

Smyslov understood chess more profoundly than his great rival Mikhail Botvinnik, against whom he contested three world championship matches with honours even. But Botvinnik was the better psychologist, had a shrewd knowledge of chess politics and made wily use of rules where 12-12 kept his title in 1954 and his 1957 defeat gave him a return series where he caught the flu-stricken Smyslov at the start. Smyslov took his major reverse phlegmatically. Chess for him was an art form allied to ...

I looked it over and the biggest blunder I saw was 12. c4 putting the Bishop on d3 out of play. I think this pretty much decided white's faith. It might be a bit harsh to put move 12 up for the fall at move 50 but if you look at the position and the following game, you will see a definite weakness which was created by this move pestering white for the remainder of the game.

He remained an immensely strong chess player even into his 60s and was only eliminated from the world championship cycle by a young Garry Kasparov in 1984. Smyslov learnt the moves from his father, who was a very strong chess player, at the age of six and was schooled initially in endgames which doubtless led to his acknowledged mastery of this phase of the game. Message: I decided not to analyse the 11 games as I thought I would do (I got 2 analysed games that I didn't put on the top 3, maybe I'll post them after this) for it takes me at least an hour per game and anyway, it'll just get confusing and no one will look at all of the games anyway... I took a close look to each and every game on the list and chose those I think to be the bests (it was a difficult decision for the third position)... By the way, if you see I made anything you disagree with in my analysis, go ahead and we'll discuss the games, I doubt I analysed 3 games perfectly without a single mistake...
I chose it not because any of the players did miracles, but because of the lines they missed due to the incredible complexity of the position. It is so complicated I had difficulties to understand why Fritz suggested me certain moves and had to go through them move by move to see the threat that was made while other times, I saw moves that seemed good, but lead to a devastating counterattack! Even though he missed some lines, Comcicomca made a great job not to fall in this extremely complex position (I also liked the way he mated Black...)! Watch this 19 moves long mind fight :) !

Message: I also agree with Rick in the match Evagere vs Amigic. Never really thought about tying the bishop up as being of major significance but seeing it in play in this game probably was the worst mistake. I used to think it was a source of strength because it meant the pawn position was strong, however quite clearly not. As someone who makes this mistake alot will be more careful next time.

I award the following game from Vixen with the second prize... Let's say it seemed to me as both third and second awards were pretty close, but I chose this way because this game was won even though Vixen was at a moment in an (in my opinion) inferior position, but she rose back and crushed her opponent with a couple of well thought sequences that lead to a quick end!

Most great player would, as White, resign right away... 13...Nxd3 14.Qxd3 Nxf4 15.Qf3 e5 16.Nb3 Loses White the g2 pawn through this well thought sequence by Black : 16...Be6 17.Nc5 Bd5 18.Qg3 Bxg2 19.f3 This move causes the following and is a pretty bad one, but White has already lost this one unless Black makes a big mistake, so it might sometimes be better to try and create opportunities for you opponent to make a mistake... 19...Qd5 20.Ne4 Another mistake for White... 20...a5 21.bxa5 f5 22.Ned2 [22.Ng5 Qc5+ (22...h6 23.Ne6 Qxe6 24.Qxf4) 23.Qf2 Qxf2+ 24.Kxf2 Nd3+ Leads to material loss for white, but it gets most of Black's pieces away from the white King allowing White a second chance in this game...; 22.Nf2 Bxf3 23.Na3 (23.Qh4 Ng2; 23.Qg5 Bg4) 23...Ne2+ 24.Rxe2 Bxe2 Again, material loss, but it is one of the less bad possibilities...] 22...Qc5+ 23.Qf2 Nh3+ White resigns 0–1

But then again 11. Nxc6 Nxc6 is ok for black, since he developes his knight to a natural square with the field e5 in sight and after breaking open the centre (concretely=dxe4) his bishop on g7 might prove his worth...
I think black is still equal after 11. Nxc6
after 13. Bf4 of course it is over...

Message: We are in sixth closing in on fifth, press the V in the number of games won column. The ELO table doesnt really work. Let me tell you why.
At the start/mid May our team and Alekhine were neck and neck in the games won table. Over the last two months we have pulled nearly eight games ahead and yet we have never passed them in the ELO table. The ELO table doesnt appear to take into account the number of games finished and therefore the bigger teams, who complete more games, always suffer.
As we have had over ten timeouts unfortunately our ELo rating has taken a big hit and hence we have dropped down the league. If you look again in three weeks probably be back in the top twenty. The whole ELO ratings system doesnt really work.

Message: Just popped in from baby sitting duties…. (My goodness this is difficult)
Good wins in the last few days :).
Dr Nick, Velvetvelour (although the games were pretty comprehensive). Kldr is back in business with a very interesting match against stewed.
And a mention for the following players:
Ldog1976, Transdromeda and Rowydrooks all of whom are on fire. (Not literally on fire, I mean there not sitting at their computers with smoke smouldering from them). But they have all won a cluster of games.
Our team score has gone through the roof.

Message: Apologies for those who are running short on team matches this will be resolved over the next few days. Thank you in particular to the new players who have remained patient.
Other news: The following players were removed following timeout offences:
Baja, Easyluv and Gameboy.
To Easyluv, the very best of luck, time pressure got the better of you and this is well understood.
To Baja, hope things go well for you, for a while you were the rock in the team and again there are certain things in life more important than chess.
To gameboy.............!

10/12/2005 14:50:21 Play online chess | Ever wondered what a Haggis looks like?
Message: I'd gladly send a picture of a haggis, unfortunately, despite several attempts, I have been completely unable to manage to caputre their image at all.
First of all, I tried my good old Kodak box Brownie ( that's a rather primitive but functional camera, 1962 vintage, in case you didn't know). The result was a blob on the film - it could have been the haggis, or it might have been my finger over the lens, or it may even have been evidence of UFO activity but whatever it was it was definitely not evidence of haggis.
My next attempt was a Kodak Instamatic (the expensive one, with built-in flash), unfortunately, I was naive enough to think I would get better definition by using the flash and the result five days spent in a hospital bed after being trampled by haggis, and I have had to have some serious ear surgery to get rid of the sounds in my ears (unfortunately they are still with me to this day).
Thinking conventional photography was perhaps a little behind the times, I decided to use a digital camera on my next attempt, but once again this met with disaster. The camera seemed to possess slightly more intelligence than it's operator, and when a haggis was captured in the viewfinder, the camera refused to operate. Inverting the camera to ascertain the cause of the problem did however result in some near perfect pictures of my nasal passages however I was not impressed by the camera's inbuilt red-eye reduction function since, before I used the camera, I did not have red eyes and afterwards I had to wear dark glasses for several days.
Deciding that perhaps the use of technical aids was a little beyond me and recalling how in the days of my youth I'd progressed from drawing matchstick men and women into drawing what (for me at least) were recognisable figures, I purchased an artists kit (from Woolworths - excellent quality) complete with easel, sketching pad, brushes, some kind of black pencils and lots of different colours of paint. Stopping off at the nearest off-license for supplies, I once more headed off into the hills to where I knew the haggis were. I don't know if you have ever tried painting (or drawing or even doodling on paper), but when the sun is shining, there's only a light breeze and the haggis are playing around, it has to be one of the most relaxing feelings in life. Nothing can compare to sitting in the heather with a small (OK, perhaps not so small) glass of Scotland's best, attempting to capture the scene for posterity - OK make that several not-so-small glasses of hard stuff then. Bliss. Unfortunately this was Scotland, where all four seasons can (and normally do) come in the same hour. All I have left to show for this trip are some sheets of paper containing similar blobs of colour to the ones I originally took on the box Brownie in the very beginning.
These experiments have taught me several lessons, the main one being, "Don't try to capture the image of a haggis - it's bad luck", another being, "If you do capture the image of a haggis, it always looks like a three year old child's first painting" and finally, "When venturing out haggis spotting, make sure you have all weather gear and several bottles of uisge beatha".

Message: I will take this time to hire a "plumber" for my game, i.e. repair a few positional holes , tighten the nuts of my technique and get corrective lenses for my tactics. Time to hit the books, in other words. However, I can still play a mean game from time to time and defy a losing streak, as we see here: I initially played one game with orvar_roed as white, experimenting with the Dada Gambit (1. g3 e5 2. Bg2 d5 3. b4!?). I won a pawn or two but ended up with a huge deficit in development, so I took a perpetual to avoid landing in hot water. Disappointed in this cop-out, Orvar wanted a rematch and an opportunity to skin your beloved moi. So we did, and I played my customary Alekhine's Defence. He chose the sharp two-pawns attack, and was summarily crushed in a 25-move miniature:

To your last question I'm tempted to answer a lot of funny remarks, but none could ever match Velvet's...
As for my retracting implication to the team, I shall defend myself by saying how much work I got at school until you all pity me enough for the next sentences to make effect...
Last paragraph (I swear, anyway I just have to delete the parenthesis if I realize I lied) I've been wondering what you would think of accepting a new member... Profile! : ... Abracadabra! : ... id = user_name : vesper8 (I must remeber this spell)... I introduced him to this site a couple of weeks ago and I was thinking of asking him to join the team, but wanted to make sure it's ok with you all... Is it?
