Message: That was a great help to me. As you could see, I was so certain that promotion spelled doom for black that I assumed the puzzle was wrong! So clearly I would never have seen the potential in what struck me as a clearly "losing" position. Post another! ——— Vlad Kramnik holds his hoodoo over Judit Polgar — The phenomenon of the difficult opponent against whom you have poor results which create a psychological mountain is well known to many chess players. At top level, it can change careers and decide world-class chess events. Bobby Fischer often did badly against Ewfim Geller, which helped spark the American's failure in the 1962 candidates. Garry Kasparov found Vlad Kramnik tough, and eventually lost his world title to the younger Russian. The all-time best woman Judit Polgar has proved herself the equal or superior of dozens of the top men. But she struggled against Kasparov, including in an infamous game where he retracted a knight move, and she also has a large minus total against ...

——— Iranian, Refusing to Play Israeli, Expelled From Chess Tournament — One of Iran’s top chess grandmasters was expelled from an international chess tournament on Tuesday after he refused to play a match against an Israeli opponent, the director of the tournament said. The Iranian, Ehsan Ghaem Maghami, was scheduled to play Ehud Shachar in the fourth round of the Corsica Masters, a pairing determined by computer. The director, Léo Battesti, said in a telephone interview that Mr. Maghami had asked him to change the pairing, but was told that doing so would violate chess tournament rules. Mr. Maghami then failed to appear at the scheduled time to play Mr. Shachar. Mr. Battesti said Mr. Maghami should have told him beforehand that he would object to ...

Black has done a fatal mistake eating the queen I think but the white' s trap is very ingenious... ——— Mastering Chess: Talent Or Practice? — Why do some people, chess players or musicians, practice less but attain more? The common belief is that practice is necessary to achieve mastery in chess, but it's not enough. There has to be something else that sets apart people who get really good at chess, just like in music. A study published in Psychological Science last year found that musicians need a lot of practice, but researchers identified one additional factor: musicians who are better at sight-reading have better working memory, the ability to keep relevant pieces of information active in your mind. For chess, that additional factor has not yet been pinned down. One possibility is intelligence. A lot of studies have found that children who play chess have ...

Charbonneau-Hussein, Dresden Chess Olympiad 2008. White has just sacrificed the bishop on h7. Is this sound? DK: Sometimes we lose games because we are simply outplayed and it's painful but fair. We might even learn something from this kind of defeat. But sometimes we lose because of a blind spot – a simple idea is overlooked and doesn't even cross our mind. Out of all the maddening ways to lose, this is the most infuriating – there's no consolation, all we know is that our brain short-circuited at a crucial moment. Why are some moves so hard for us to see? How is it that chess computers are ...

——— On Chess: Kasparov resurfaces occasionally for win — After two decades of dominating the chess world, Garry Kasparov astonished his contemporaries when he abruptly retired in 2005. On four occasions since, he has reappeared in blitz chess events — all of which he has won. His most recent foray was an eight-game match against Nigel Short, whom he had earlier defeated in a world title match in 1993. Although Short is still an active chess player, Kasparov was able to prevail, albeit by a narrow 41/2-to-31/2 score. It was a close call for Kasparov, who trailed Short by a point with two rounds to go. But the 47-year-old ex-world chess champion exhibited characteristic grit and determination in winning the last two games. Although Kasparov maintains some ...

Message: Yes, you are right patagusto. Eating the queen has just lost black the game. The moves that followed in the game was as follow:
10 Nf6+ gxf6
11 Bxf7 and black is mated
The reason why I posted this is that sometimes the centre hasnt opened up yet (still closed)... that doesnt mean that a person cant be placed in checkmate. The other reason is to show that before you evaluate your position and/or intended move you should give attention to all possible checks and captures first, no matter what the situation. Black failed to apply this golden rule.

Message: Our rating is looking up (1326) despite our recent spate of timeouts. We are #44 out of 186 teams by elo rating (top 25%) and are #12 out of 186 teams by points (top 10%). Congrats to everyone on their recent wins. Again, if you are inclined to increase your game load, please do so and I will find matches for you.
Also, if you know of anyone interested in team play, please let me know. I would like to find four or five new members. Not just chess friends, though. We look for people with an avg opponent rating near the player's elo rating, a history of not timing out, a fair number of games (more than 25) so their rating is well-established, and even premium membership, which means unlimited team games if they wish. If you know anyone please send me a message.
By the end of today (5:00 GMT-6) I will tally the votes regarding our member milton, who timed out 10 games last week. He has not been back to GK. I hope he is OK. As a practical matter we must make a decision, however. If you have not voted and wish to do so, please send me your vote to 1. Keep him, 2. Eject him, or 3. Abstain from voting.
Thanks and good luck on your games.
Matt

Message: I checked and he has no active games and the last 20 or so games have timed out. So, if he is not responding to your e-mails, something must have happened to him and I hope it is nothing serious.
However, rules are rules and I think you must enforce them evenly otherwise they cease to be effective.
I want to suggest however, that a probation period be used before you allow a player a full membership in order to test the sincerity of that player. It seems we have had more than a normal share of this problem. You could make the "candidate" play some games with team members in order to guage strength and commitment.

Message: That is not an altogether bad idea, skip, but in my experience players who have timed out often have done so even after they have a fair number of team matches under their belts. I too am worried that something happened to milton because he has never timed out before. But as you say I must take care of team business in the meantime. In cruising other team's pages (and seeing our wins by timeout), I am not sure we have a worse problem than any other team our size. Of course 10 timeouts is tough to handle for any team, but the only option there is to feed players very few games, which means very few team points.
I am open to all suggestions on how to handle timeouts. Wendell thought there should be an automatic expulsion rule and left the team because he thought I was soft on timeouts. I disagree with "zero tolerance" policies of every sort, but I am open to any ideas and discussion on the matter.

Yet when I went for the move, knowing the game was won, I moved Qa7+ without thinking about it ... moving on to my next game. When the "white won" did not come up I was shocked. Lo and behold ... a mate missed because I moved too fast.
Take time with your games. It makes all the difference!!
