Time control: 3 days per move
Opposing team: Buenos Aires Team
Players:
1. patagon (1817)
2. tigre32 (1754)
3. silvioq (1558)

Your team: 64 Squares
Players:
1. kai_sim (1953)
2. dragonballz (1823)
3. reubenfine (1627)

I'll take one more last match and then will retire for the rest of the year and will do my duty as captain only.

Everyone else i would like to remind to set your max team matches in your preferences tab! please don't forget to do that, everyone will be matched as availability shows. (or use this link: gameknot.com/pref.pl )
thank you

regarding chic_luc
i removed him from the team for now. as soon his account issue is fixed i'll put him back onto the team. as it appears he's banned from GK for resigning team games. I would like to thank lordoftherings for complaining about him. I would also like to point out that chic_luc made 61 points for his old team out of 134 team games! he won every second of his team game and his previous captain dares to complain about him.
in context to this i would also like to point out this threat:
gameknot.com/fmsg/chess5/1719.shtml
i didn't posted more agressive on purpose even if i could have said a lot more, but i think everyone gets the picture and knows what to do and how to spread the word...

anyways, i would love to have a little more players on the team who are able to play as many team matches as they can and to win them all. so, if you have a friend who's a chessfanatic and without a team, let him know about the future number one under the teams.

please, if anybody speaks ungarian, i need someone to translate a few sentenses for me please. please private msg me for that.

good luck for your games and talk to you soon

Vlad Kramnik holds his hoodoo over Judit Polgar — The phenomenon of the difficult opponent against whom you have poor results which create a psychological mountain is well known to many chess players. At top level, it can change careers and decide world-class chess events. Bobby Fischer often did badly against Ewfim Geller, which helped spark the American's failure in the 1962 candidates. Garry Kasparov found Vlad Kramnik tough, and eventually lost his world title to the younger Russian. The all-time best woman Judit Polgar has proved herself the equal or superior of dozens of the top men. But she struggled against Kasparov, including in an infamous game where he retracted a knight move, and she also has a large minus total against ...

Iranian, Refusing to Play Israeli, Expelled From Chess Tournament — One of Iran’s top chess grandmasters was expelled from an international chess tournament on Tuesday after he refused to play a match against an Israeli opponent, the director of the tournament said. The Iranian, Ehsan Ghaem Maghami, was scheduled to play Ehud Shachar in the fourth round of the Corsica Masters, a pairing determined by computer. The director, Léo Battesti, said in a telephone interview that Mr. Maghami had asked him to change the pairing, but was told that doing so would violate chess tournament rules. Mr. Maghami then failed to appear at the scheduled time to play Mr. Shachar. Mr. Battesti said Mr. Maghami should have told him beforehand that he would object to ...

i just found a little brainteaser

Message:
what i like so much about it, is that you can take it anywhere without writing it down or memorizing, all you need to know is:
"A game begins with 1.e4 and ends in the fifth move with knight takes rook mate."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
the author says about this pu8zzle:
This is the starting position. All you have to do is enter some legal chess moves, so that the game ends on move five with the stipulated knight takes rook mate. Easy enough, don't you think? Maybe not. When John gave me the problem originally, he sealed the answer in an envelope and asked me to return this unopened, with the solution written on the back. Together with Ken Thompson, one of the people behind Unix and C, I spent many hours trying to solve the problem (and Ken spent at least an hour trying to read the contents of the envelope over a bright light). In the end we tore the thing open and admitted humiliating defeat.

There is a nice story about this problem. In 1986, during the turmoils after Kasparov had won the world championship and was forced to face an immediate rematch, both he and Karpov went to Lucerne to meet with FIDE president Campomanes. I was with them and we had a long car journey together from Zurich to Luzerne. To entertain them I gave the two top players in the world John's puzzle. It kept them busy during the ride and for the next couple of days in the hotel. They couldn't solve it.

Before we parted I did the Nunn on Garry: I sealed the answer in a hotel envelope and told him to return it unopened with the solution. I didn't hear from him for many months. Then one day I came home and found a number of messages with a phone number where I should call Kasparov urgently. I did so and found him in a distraught state. "You are a dead man, Fred," he said, "you have put me in a very embarrassing situation." Turns out he was running a session of his chess school, together with Botvinnik, and he had given the problem to his students. When they couldn't solve it and asked him for the answer he had told them to try for another day. Meanwhile the hunt was on for the envelope, which unfortunately could not be located. When I told him the solution on the phone I could hear Mikhail Botvinnik gasp in the background. And Garry, who was convinced I had stated the problem incorrectly, couldn't believe that he and his students had missed it.

Another little story? I was telling the above to Vishy Anand and Vlady Kramnik two years ago in a little restaurant in Wijk aan Zee. They were listening bemused, thinking that I was probably adding a lot of journalistic dressing to the whole thing. But then suddenly a Grandmaster sitting at the adjacent table turned to us and said, "Are you talking about the problem which Kasparov gave his students back in 1986? Well I was one of the students!" The Grandmaster was Boris Alterman, now grown up and one of the seconds that has helped Garry in some of his matches.

Recently Boris sent us the above picture that was taken during the 1986 Botvinnik School session described above. It shows Garry Kasparov and Mikhail Botvinnik (being interviewed) in the front, and the youthful Boris Alterman sitting in the middle of the picture in the second row of students.

Frederic Friedel
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

... i just wanted to share this, because i like it very much.

don't bother asking me for the solution, i'm still working on it. i can do it that black wins in the 5th, but it's supposed to be with white. so good luck you all and enjoy!

Mastering Chess: Talent Or Practice? — Why do some people, chess players or musicians, practice less but attain more? The common belief is that practice is necessary to achieve mastery in chess, but it's not enough. There has to be something else that sets apart people who get really good at chess, just like in music. A study published in Psychological Science last year found that musicians need a lot of practice, but researchers identified one additional factor: musicians who are better at sight-reading have better working memory, the ability to keep relevant pieces of information active in your mind. For chess, that additional factor has not yet been pinned down. One possibility is intelligence. A lot of studies have found that children who play chess have ...

Chess: A horrible way to lose — Losing by oversight is particularly painful; here's an example of failing to appreciate the power of a lateral defence. Charbonneau-Hussein, Dresden Chess Olympiad 2008. White has just sacrificed the bishop on h7. Is this sound? DK: Sometimes we lose games because we are simply outplayed and it's painful but fair. We might even learn something from this kind of defeat. But sometimes we lose because of a blind spot – a simple idea is overlooked and doesn't even cross our mind. Out of all the maddening ways to lose, this is the most infuriating – there's no consolation, all we know is that our brain short-circuited at a crucial moment. Why are some moves so hard for us to see? How is it that chess computers are ...

On Chess: Kasparov resurfaces occasionally for win — After two decades of dominating the chess world, Garry Kasparov astonished his contemporaries when he abruptly retired in 2005. On four occasions since, he has reappeared in blitz chess events — all of which he has won. His most recent foray was an eight-game match against Nigel Short, whom he had earlier defeated in a world title match in 1993. Although Short is still an active chess player, Kasparov was able to prevail, albeit by a narrow 41/2-to-31/2 score. It was a close call for Kasparov, who trailed Short by a point with two rounds to go. But the 47-year-old ex-world chess champion exhibited characteristic grit and determination in winning the last two games. Although Kasparov maintains some ...

- one is a really good online friend (chees)
- and the rest is just average
...

regarding the team i would like to welcome never onto the team. he's the one who will complete our "low ratings players section". thank you so much for joining us and i'm sure you'll be able to get a whole bunch of team points soon.
we will need a few players in the 1500-1800 section, so if you know anyone, ask him/her... (and make sure, that if the person is on a different team, that they can only improve ;p)
some more players in the 1800-2000 section would be nice too...
for everyone who doesn't know, we have chees on the team, who is on the top veterans players table. dailos is on his best way, if he would play more matches against the top 50 players. i'll try soon to set up some team matches for you with other players from the top vet table. best would be if you would challenge them private.
anyways, we have two of the best players ever on GK in our team and i would like to thank you both for sticking with me!
i'm close to draw chees by the way! HAHAHAHA! you loser you!!!! ... just kidding, it actually makes me very proud...
and how is that chess puzzle going my friends!?!?!?!?!
still didn't solve it???? hahahaha suckers! (me included)
but i did find a second solution for black on the 5th move by accident...

i also have set up a few more team matches, you can check them out here:

worst games ever? certanly not played on GK, otb there was one where i lost my queen in move 5...
but regarding GK, there is one game i realy remember, it got stuck in my head. i can't remember anymore against who it was. :(
what happened is that i had this move order worked out, like 15 moves ahead, all moves with checks involved, he had one alternative to lose a rook, otherwise it would be his queen at the end. now i was playing at the same time like 100 other matches and during the match i got confused and checked him with my queen first, instead of with the knight. so he was able to exchange queens instead of losing his. the game actualy ended in a draw, he didn't want to addmit that, so it came down to the last move. i also thing that at one point of the game he had outside help, because he started playing like the best player ever and he was saying something about being a GM with a rating of 2400. his GK rating was like 1700.
;p
well, i wouldn't call it the worst game, but it had the worst move ever.

now to spurtus game, i don't think that you played that bad... he played gambit style and made a lot of pressure. his rating is much higher and you had only 2 bad moves in it. as a matter of a fact, if that is your worst game ever, i'm happy that you are on the team :))
actualy i remember how you defended yourself against me, and you did a VERY GREAT job on it!

so guys, enjoy your time without me and my anoying posts, because i'll be back on monday ;p

good luck

to put "squares" in front and behind the teamname. Only perhaps the name itself should be put in bigger letters now, to emphasize the name, and make it more clear compared to the squares. What about that, Kai?

i can do it like this...

▄▀▄▀64SQUARES▀ 604;▀▄

▄▀▄▀64 Squares▀▄▀▄

▄▀ 64 SQUARES ▀▄

it's a problem with the GK profiles, everything longer than this will be broken into 2 lines when you click onto the profile.
so, whats the call?

number 3 is the best. But that´s of course only my opinion. What does other say? There must also be somebody else at the team with an opinion on this?

hi everyone!
team is doing great, we completed 18 team games until now and almost completed our "newbie" score. unfortunately dragonballz timed out in two of his team games, i'm just happy that it wasn't more my friend.

sarah, sorry for the missing matches, but i don't have anyone right now showing as available except jdoria4. i rather send another high rated player with you both together so you'll have to sit and wait a little.

our rating is currently 1400+ and we are doing great. i've sent some challenges out and still wait for the response. i think most teams are a little scared of us, because i started to gather the best team players from gameknot into the same team!

krunterinsky is doing much better than i was hoping for! joined as one of the last on the team and got allready 4 points out of 5 games. iamian, plasmafire44 and reubenfine are on the roll as well. the few games i looked into seem to be very promissing.

i would like to ask if there is interest on a team tourney. i would like to know who would like to join. so whoever is interested and able to join an unrated mini tourney please private msg me and i'll set something up for who's interested. we could also do it thematic with some unorthodox opening or a nice gambit or so. in private games and a tourney board for the results is possible as well (i would offer to take care of the board and to organize the games) please let me know who wants to participate and if there are any suggestions on a theme (if desired)

keep up the great work
kai

good news and bad news

Message:
first the good news because i'm excited:
i'm talking since a while with a GM i know from the past and he may will join our team to do me a favour. the reason why he may says yes is because we can now play 7days/move for the team matches. he's travelling a lot and can't guarantie to move every second or third day, but once a week may work out for him, he now would also be able to do short vacations for 3-5 days with the new postponement rules.

second, i would like to welcome sualksnh on the team! i'm sure he'll also be able to help us out where he can.

third, chees promised me to talk to two of his friends to join the team who are very good players as well, but currently not interested in team play, i was just thinking that a match or two will do, friend is friend and point is point :)))

the bad news:
jdoria4 is MIA since 4 days and timed out in 5 team matches. he got 2 remaining because his oponent postponed for a few days, i hope jdoria4 is back soon, will leave an apologie and win the other 2 matches.
the timing wasn't good at all either, because iamian and plasma just won 2 more matches BEFORE he timed out, so the timed out games will be calculated with the higher team score (which was place 2 on the teams table). we will see tomorrow where we will come out too...

also i would like to point out again (if you didn't allready):
THAT YOU WILL HAVE TO SET YOUR MAX TEAM GAMES IN YOUR PREFERENCES LINK! I WILL GIVE OUT TEAM MATCHES AS IT SHOWES YOU AVAILABLE!

please guys, thats the only thing i'm expecting from you!
... except being a nice guy/girl and to win your team matches ;p

ok, here we go and lets roll, we can do it and i would like to see us as the first team with a 1800 rating! and the best is: i know that we can do it!
have fun and best regards
kai

Introducing myself

Message:
Hello everybody! My name is Klaus Gawehns, I am living in Germany and I am now 46 years old. I am an OTB player (FM, Elo 2390) and I started to play correspondence chess via email in 1998 because I had no time to play Open tournaments then. In 2002 and 2003 the IECC had a match versus Gameknot and I lost both games. So I learned about this site and I joined it.
I will play up to 6 team games simultaneously. The reflection time doesn't matter for me. I'll also accept slow games.
Best regards, Klaus

A day to be remembered

Message:
Today I´m a bit proud of myself, and happy on behalf of the team. I managed to reach 2200 rating, and are then the first player at the team with 2200. But perhaps not for long, so I better enjoy it ;-).

And then I would like to say welcome to all new players at the team. We are indeed becoming a strong team.
