Subject: Just started a new team!

Message:
I just started a new team and was wondering if anyone would give any advice? I have few members that joined already and one or two more to come. I have sent out a few challenges and am waiting for a reply. Don't really know what I want to know about, just any tips would be helpful, some reasurance that its not a pain in the a** to be captain or something like that. Can I get kicked out of the forum for typing a**? Don't know how picky they are here, Damn and on my first posting that would suck. Also any team captains feel free to challenge, The OFFSPRING is the team name.

Good luck

I found that there was more time involved in captaining a team than I expected at first.

A couple of tips:

1) Know what your team members want - keep them happy and hopefully they'll continue to contribute to the team
2) Be firm with anyone who causes any trouble (eg timeouts) without having good reasons - it can annoy other team memebers and opponents
3) Beware of other captains trying to arrange unfair match-ups - check the opposing players profiles as well as there rating to ensure matches are reasonably fair.
4) Enjoy it and don't let your own game suffer.

Good luck
Chris (captain of Blue Moon Rising)

Good Advice

Message:
From chrisp. You will get a feel for captains you can trust and captains you can not.

In checking out your potential opponents, look for (1) average rating, (2) average opponent rating, and (3) number of timeouts (which could indicate they are a strong player with a deflated rating due to recent timeouts). If you have time, you can look beyond timeouts to each potential opponent's actual game history to make sure there is not a recent spate of resigned games (also deflating one's rating).

Pick your players and opponents carefully, including your opposing teams. Remember GK uses ELO rating for teams, which is silly, but is the way it is. So you could match all of your individual players fairly, and even win most games, but drop in rating if your opposing team has a very low ELO rating.

Take the time it takes. I founded a team and then resigned as captain because I was moving and changing jobs and knew I could not devote the time necessary to intelligent matches (though this was just before implementation of the new matching system, which makes matching a LOT faster). I recently took over the team again now that my schedule has settled down somewhat. If you see that you don't have the time, find a trustworthy teammate to take over for a couple of months to give you down time.

Have fun. Best of luck.

Enter the dragon — David Howell was one move away from a fine victory in the eighth round of the European Individual Chess Championships at Rijeka in Croatia but a blunder on the last move of the time control gave his opponent Laurent Fressinet of France the full point. Howell also nearly won his ninth round game but was just foiled in the endgame. Michael Adams was lucky to hold a draw with the white pieces against Romain Edouard, a young French GM who impressed at Hastings. Adams was close to lost but after a time scramble he emerged a pawn down in a rook ending where all the pawns were on the kingside and ...

Thanks for the advice! I would have responded sooner but did not realize I had not clicked notify me when I get a reply. I also forgot I posted at all.
Good advice though, I have had to learn it the hard way though. Whish I would have checked back sooner. The only real problem I am having is timeouts.

The f-pawn, part 5: is this a good position to push forward? — It it time for black to use his f-pawn as a battering ram? We saw last week that advancing the f-pawn can leave you horribly exposed at the back if the attack stalls. Here Black has removed the knight from f6, clearing the way for the battering ram. Is it wise to advance the pawn to f5? RB When playing against 1 d4 I will often go for a Nimzo-Indian (as in the present chess game) or King's Indian. I have a liking for the kind of kingside attack that can arise – with certain key differences obviously – from both defences. With the centre safely closed, Black has ...
