Play online chess
Subject: A question from another old Novice Nook.

Message:
I've just noticed something in the Novice Nook #27: -> www.chesscafe.com
In the 'Material' section after the four bullet points he says that:

"At the start of a game a tempo is worth about • pawn (for a pawn gambit you like to get three tempos)."

It is a '•' in the actual text, so logically I would assume that what is in the brackets should imply that the '•' = ~1/3 pawn. I had that value in my head already from a previous Novice Nook where he mentioned it in passing, but I'd just like to check what other people think before I properly commit it to memory. Thanks,

Matt

Sounds about right...

... though it seems to me a subjective measure. The value of a tempo will change later on. You have no doubt seen situations in which a tempo is worth more than a queen, and others (e.g. zugzwang) in which a tempo is worth less than any material.
(If a machine ever demonstrates that at the starting position in chess White is in zugzwang, then we might have to reevaluate! ;-))
