Message: I was just surfing today, and ran across a site of C. Gav*** Gavreitas?! Well his name is at the site. And he had a win vs Danny Kopec, who I played a time or two in blitz and was a real scullcrusher! So thought it impressive here. And decided to start a thread re blitz Chess worldwide, since I'll probably be surfing it some more & who knows What will turn up.
Correction: In a previous thread I believe I called GM Walter Browne's organization for blitz the WBCC, but would be WBCA instead. I wonder if he is still running it now? So much to catch up on.

OK my first try failed because: You Must put actual " " Quotation marks around your fen. The first " is right after the = sign. The last goes after everything ... which is after the SIX in this case ... on that second fen line I tried above. ——— Fide world chess championship: is this Topalov's last chance? — On Friday, in Sofia, Veselin Topalov will begin his challenge to Vishy Anand for the unified Fide/classical chess world championship title. The high point of Topalov's career to date was in 2005 when he won the Fide world chess championship tournament at San Luis ahead of Anand, Svidler, Leko and other super grandmasters. It may have been that the format suited Topalov – he has always been considered a stronger tournament than match player. The following year, at Elista, he lost his bid to unseat Anand's predecessor Vladimir Kramnik as classical chess world champion in a match marred by gamesmanship and (unproven) allegations of cheating. Topalov, now 35, will be aware that ...

Message: I think the position is at move 5 - and I'm a little puzzled: did you deliberately place the board from Black's point of view? (Having put 2 Black kings on the diagram at my first try - discovered on rechecking - I can see how you could do it!)
Interesting game. I thought White's attack was pretty good but it just seemed to peter out when T. Gavriel returned the Knight sac. Very fine defence...
I liked Kopec's opening - it is what I played when I encountered the King's Indian for the first time as a schoolboy. Basically I played a QGD against it! Did OK, actually ... won some, lost some...

Ion ——— Anand's appeal to postpone World Chess Championship match turned down — Viswanathan Anand's appeal to postpone his World chess championship match against Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria in view of the volcanic eruption has been turned down by the organising committee. Anand was stranded in Frankfurt on Friday on his way to Sofia, the venue of the chess match, which is scheduled to start next Friday with an opening ceremony on Wednesday. The organising committee confirmed it got an e-mailed request for a three day postponement from Anand and also a word from FIDE about the situation. However, the organisers stuck to their guns and insisted that the opening ceremony should be held as scheduled on Wednesday as it involved ...

Message: No, my placement of WT at the top was not deliberate. Upon further experimentation, it is revealed that which color goes to the top (for the fen string
of fen=r1bqk2r/pppnppbp/5np1/3p2B1/3P4/4PN2/PPPN1PPP/R2QKB1R w KQkq - 1 6 )
depends upon where you put the 2nd Quotation Mark.
Placed between the last R and the w then WT comes out at the bottom. But if it is placed anywhere After the w , then BL comes out at the bottom. Below diagram is
adjusted " to just before the w. {My prior diagram of this I had it after the number 6 at the end of all. But anywhere after the w still puts WT on TOP.}

Not having computer programming skills of the internet variety, I just have to work it out as I go. Some people must find it all much simpler. But I am pleased to still find it intriguing! And Fun.

[Thanks MUCH Nima !] ——— A Showdown in Bulgaria for the World Championship — A World Chess Championship match that begins on Friday in Sofia, Bulgaria, between Viswanathan Anand of India, the titleholder, and Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria, a former chess champion, should be a treat for fans. Anand and Topalov are dynamic, and each can land a knockout blow if an opponent slips up. Both are excellent at preparing openings, so the match could come down to which of them has the fresher ideas. Since September 2008, Anand, 40, has slipped from No. 1 in the world to No. 4. That slide can be blamed on his inactivity — including preparations for this match — rather than a decline in his skills. He has been among the world’s top five chess players for ...

Message: to accidentally flip the board with the FEN. I did the same thing on my first try. Gotta be careful to designate the 'w' and 'b' to make the board display the way you want. And if you're showing an end game or puzzle like I did, it can be quite confusing to determine which way the board is to be played.
But I'm NOT COMPLAINING! I love this new feature. Just gotta be careful to pay attention to what you're doing!
As the old saying goes... garbage in, garbage out... ——— Previewing the world chess championship match — The world chess championship match between champion Viswanathan Anand of India and Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria begins Friday in Sofia, Bulgaria. The schedule calls for a rest day after every two days of play except that there will be an additional rest day May 9, between the 11th and 12th games. If the score reaches 6-6, the players will break the tie with a series of faster games May 12. Topalov, ranked second in the world at 2805, deserves to be considered a slight favorite over Anand, fourth at 2787. However, one can imagine almost any outcome. Anand has more experience in chess matches and he plays more soundly, with better judgment, but Topalov is more ...

Message: ...not quite what I thought. Seems I got it 'right' first time (K+N+N vs K thread - check it out!) completely by accident!
(Actually, Craig, I was just curious whether you might have had Black 'nearer the reader' (i.e. at the bottom) because he (T. Gavriel) is the protagonist in the story.)
I like the feature as well: eye catching, and great for chess discussions. Great!

Ion ——— Final two rounds produce an exciting climax to the German chess league — Russia's national chess league may be the strongest in the world but Germany's Bundesliga runs it close and its media profile is far higher. The final two rounds last weekend began with Baden-Baden and Solingen on 24 points from 13 matches, Werder Bremen 23 and Mulheim 20. Baden-Baden is the cash-rich team and even boasts the world chess champion, Vishy Anand, and world No1, Magnus Carlsen in its squad, though the Indian has played only two games and the Norwegian none. But the active regulars are so strong that Michael Adams, the England No1, plays only on a mid-board in the eight-man team. Werder Bremen, which has links with the football club, fields ...

8/09/2006 17:28:25 Play online chess | The flipped board...
Message: is, I think, because of the way it is coded. It seems to take a standard FEN and always put the side to move on top, instead of always putting white on the bottom and having some kind of side-to-move indicator. I'm guessing that if you want white on bottom you simply have to make sure the FEN is entered with black to move, unless Mike decides to change the code.

Message: Yeppers! I think that's the trick alright. Just tweak the ending 'w' or 'b' in the FEN string to how you want the board to appear. Of course there may be times where you *want* to view it from black's side.... I like the option, but for the default I might vote to have it flipped as I made the same error too and have seen several get confused by that. Or perhaps I'm still missing something myself? At any rate I can review it before I post to see if it's what I want. If not, I can go back and change it!
I sure still really LIKE the new feature though! Another GREAT improvement to the sight.
