Message: I absolutely swooned over the play of Velimirovic in the 70's ... such a fantastic and fearless tactician !! I hope he did not come to ill disposition while skii jumping, or parachuting or something .... if his life was as fearless as his Chess! Can anyone tell me why he is not playing Chess now?

Others Ive wondered about: IM's Rogoff, Kim Commins, Henley ?
GM Edmar Mednis was a fav who is now deceased. I've heard some info about IM Raymond Weinstein and a rumour about James T. Sherwin ... but a bit reluctant to say here. If you are wondering you can PM me; perhaps help me to confirm re the latter.

Soren ——— Vishy Anand throws down the gauntlet to Magnus Carlsen — Vishy Anand set the agenda for top chess in 2010, and probably 2011, when he declared after retaining his world chess title that his ambition now is to regain the No1 spot in the global chess rankings. which is basically a www followed by his first and last name dot com ——— Kamsky Wins Strong Chess Tournament in Azerbaijan — Gata Kamsky is enjoying a renaissance. A year ago, Kamsky seemed to be slipping. He lost a semifinal match for the world chess championship to Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria in early 2009. After that he had a few lackluster tournaments and his world ranking dropped to 41 from 18. His ranking has still not full recovered (he is No. 34 on the current list, which was released Wednesday), but his results have improved. Earlier this year, he won the United States Chess Championship for only the second time in his career. Last month, he won the Grenke Open at the Chess Classic in Mainz, Germany. He finished ahead of a world class field that included Levon Aronian of Armenia, Alexander Grischuk and ...

Cairo ——— Mathematicians, Musicians and Chess Masters — Sunday’s chess column was about Noam Elkies, a Harvard mathematics professor who is also a music composer and chess player. Though Elkies is unusual at being talented in all three areas, he is not entirely unique. Through the years, there have been a number of strong chess players who were excellent mathematicians or musicians. A Web page called “Mathematics and Chess Page,” lists many strong chess players who were also mathematicians, including Adolf Anderssen, one of the best players of the 19th century; Emanuel Lasker, the second world champion; Max Euwe, the fifth world champion; and, among the more recent examples, John Nunn, an English chess grandmaster, who ...
