Stumbled across this: -> www.arcademate.com

The challenge is not "can you beat it?" but "how quickly can you win?" I tried to wait it out until the endgame to see how clueless it is, but I just didn't have that kind of self restraint.

Haha, what a great game. :P
Nine (half) moves:
1. e4 b3
2. Bc4 e5
3. Qf3 d5
4. Bxd5 c6
5. Qxf6#
What can we learn from this? Absolutly nothing :) I think a reasonable challenge would be to complete a game without losing a piece and taking all of theirs. :P

Beginners might find this...

Message:
...challenging enough. Not all its moves are silly, and sometimes those that are look like the kind of moves that a beginner might make, e.g. spotting the attack on the rook but overlooking the deadlier mate. Board's a bit hard to read, though. I dropped a queen in one game, which was why it took about 35 moves (69ply, I think) to win.
1.d4 d5
2.Nf3 Nc6
3.e3 Bg4 So far, so plausible...
4.Bd3 b5? How often do you see this kind of beginner move - which loses more than the loose pawn...
5.Bxb5 Bxf3
6.Qxf3 e5 This one, tho', is mystifying. I wouldn't think even beginners would play this. After all they do try to play with some purpose...
7.Bxc6+ Ke7
8.Bxd5 Rc8 Overlooking the main threat...
9.Qxf7+ Kd6
10.Qe6#
This game seems to encourage you to look for the quick kill...
Cheers,
Ion

Robot chess opponent — Hopefully Dennis who is playing with a a robotic arm as his chess opponent has not input the necessary code to have the arm reach over and choke the life out of him should he win the chess match. The Lynxmotion AL5A robotic arm is, after all, full well capable of plucking each chess piece and moving it to the next space. This is made possible thanks to a Python script Dennis himself created to process the moves and decide on the next move. A webcam is used to capture the location of the desired pieces on the chess board in order to help it in its task. ...

It does seem to encourage the quick kill unfortunately, which is something that beginners really do not want to get into the habit of. I remember my first week of games pretty much all involved 1. e4 2. Bc4 3. Qf3 with the hope of a quick mate. I soon realised this was not only less fun than playing a long game but that it was actually a pretty bad opening which more often than not resulted in me getting into more trouble than it was worth. I suppose at least that game could be a training aid for spotting blunders!

The checkmate club — The University of Maryland, Baltimore County may not be the football and basketball powerhouse that its much larger sibling at College Park is, but when it comes to fielding world-class chess contenders, watch out. Its players' victory in the Final Four over three Texas teams at the national college chess championships in Brownsville over the weekend — the sixth chess championship the school has brought home during the last 10 years — is about as good as it gets. The team itself embodies in microcosm the ethic of excellence that UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski III has tirelessly promoted for the entire school and its programs during the last ...

I'm so thoroughly "trained" that it didn't even occur to me to go for the ol' Qxf7#!

Here's a fun little one:

1. e4 d5 {Scandi!!} 2. Qh5 {I'm not falling for that so easily} dxe4 3. Bc4 {Keeping after the quick kill} g6 4. Qe5 Nf6 5. Nc3 b6 {is it me or does this program really love the fianchetto?} 6. Nxe4 Nc6 {An entirely unexpected opportunity} 7. Nxf6#

Anand v Topalov: who will win this year's world chess championship? — Age... playing style... even gamesmanship. There are many vital factors in the upcoming clash. Vishy Anand defends his world title against Veselin Topalov in Sofia in a 12-game match starting on 23 April. Most pundits reckon Anand is the better chess player, but the stats tell us that in their classical chess encounters Topalov has one more win than Anand. It's only in games with a faster time control that Anand has a big plus score. If the match ends 6-6, Anand will be a clear favourite in the tie-break rapid games. Age could be a factor. Anand has turned 40. Among top chess players that practically qualifies for a free bus pass. Topalov is five years younger and ...

A tribute to Vassily Smyslov — Vassily Smyslov, the seventh world chess champion, died of heart failure in Moscow on March 27, three days after his 89th birthday. He was one of the greatest stars when the Soviet Union dominated chess. Smyslov enjoyed a long chess career, stretching from his days as a teenage master to occasional appearances in his late 70s. But he will be remembered most for his successes in the 1950s. He won two Candidates tournaments, in 1953 (probably his greatest tournament performance) and 1956, to earn the right to challenge world chess champion Mikhail Botvinnik. Their 1954 match ended in a 12-12 tie. Smyslov defeated Botvinnik ...

American Grandmaster Makes a Stand in Philadelphia — Most of the top chess players are European, and most of the top chess tournaments are in Europe. So it is not surprising that there are few spots in those competitions for non-Europeans. For many years, if an American chess player was included in an elite event, the invitation went to Gata Kamsky. But Kamsky’s world ranking has slipped to No. 34, while Hikaru Nakamura, the reigning United States chess champion, has risen to No. 17. Nakamura, at age 22, is 13 years younger than Kamsky, and he plays an exciting chess that is popular with fans. So Nakamura now seems to be claiming most of the choice tournament spots. Nakamura competed in ...

I wondered if this was a 'learning program'...

Message:
...i.e. one that 'learned' from its mistakes. I tried a repeat of bucklehead's game, and this happened: 1.e4 d5 2.Qh5 dxe4 3.Bc5 b6 (well, it varied...) 4.Bxf7+ Kd7 5.Qd5#.
Inconclusive... Most of my games with it have been in the 60-70ply range (30-35 moves). It does occasionally play sensible, even good, moves, but at other times it seems almost to challenge you to spot the cheapo it's just walked into. It has walked into some very interesting and complicated checkmate positions!
Cheers,
ion

Hmmm

Message:
It was doing okay for awhile,if I'd just give it one take back for self-dematerializing moves. It would go ahead and make a stronger one. Like it was trying to play up to my expectations :)
But then finally it got to a position after Re1+ where it had 3 options for its unchecking king move. I had to give up on it after giving it 10 or 12 tries to answer with Kf8. Instead it insisted it must move to one of the other squares ... which both lose its Queen <8~((

It's not completely stupid...

Message:
I played it and won in seven moves, but, as was said earlier, it was overlooking the real threat. I unfortunately quit the game, so I dont have the annotation, but I went in for the scholarmate, it attacked my Q, I moved, it defended its pawn (i was forking its pawn and the pawn for mate), I moved my bishop to attack, it attacked my Bishop, I won. Now, this is the sort of thing a kid who'd just learned about defending would do. It shows a bit of competence, but... still sucked lol.
P.S. This is only a game site, not an actual chess site, so what do y'all expect haha! Also, the games are pretty sweet :D
