Message: 1. d4 g6 2. h4 nf6 3. h5?
Anybody know much about this opening?
Why should black play nf6?
What does h5 seek to do?
Thanks,
Spurtus.

Message: Black played Nf6 to discourage h5 (if instead Bg7, for example, White would be able to continue his "plan" of h5 unimpeded. Black isn't losing if he permits h5, so other moves are certainly possible, esp. Bg7).
White (being a advocate of Caveman Chess), went ahead with h5, insisting that the open h-file will be worth a P. Some players will even go a step further and answer 3...Nh5 with 4.Rxh5 gh5 5.Qh5 with some compensation for the exhange (but not enough IMHO). This plan of immediately answering g6 with h4-h5 has been played as far bacl as the 1800's, but it's mostly effective in blitz--less so OTB, and still less in CC.
