Message: I was curious as to what openings you perceive as "tactical" by nature, and which openings you perceive as "positional" by nature? Thanks!

Message: Most variations of the Caro-Kann, Slav, semi-Slav, and the London System seem to be positional. I chose them specifically for that reason. It seems to me that depending upon what an opponent plays a game can be blown wide open and turned into a tactical slugfest in the first few moves. No matter which opening is being played. Especially if either of us blunder early (and often)
I think most openings have the potential to be tactical. But not all openings, such as "most" gambits, can be positional. I try to steer clear of those gambits. :)

Message: specific lines may be either positional or tactical. For instance, I think of closed lines being more
positional than open ones. ——— The Scotch Opening, part 1: an introduction — The Scotch Opening is still played at the highest level. But how does use it to gain control of the centre? Carlsen-Leko, Nanjing 2009. White to play. Over the next few weeks we're going to take a look at the Scotch Opening, which arises after 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 d4 exd4 4 Nxd4. The Scotch is hardly new: it got its name after it was used by chess players from the Edinburgh Chess Club in a correspondence match against London (1824-28). But unlike some of its contemporaries from the romantic era – the King's Gambit, for example – the Scotch remains a solid and respected chess opening. Kasparov was responsible for its modern revival after ...

Message: It had never really occurred to me that tactics played any greater role in opening theory versus positional theory until I was reading a book other day (I forget the name) and it mentioned to choose an opening repertoire based on your particular proclivity for "tactical" or "positional" styles. It got me thinking, and I have no idea if the openings of my choosing, that I typically play more than others, give me any more chances for tactical versus positional games. I typically play English as white, Sicilian Accelerated Dragon, Dutch, and recently picked up Scandinavian as black. I "think" that I'm a more tactical player, in that I hate closed games, and am always looking to open the board up and to find certain combinations (not that I always find them!) Ah well, I was just curious as to whether certain openings can be roughly classified in this manner. Thanks for the comments.
——— Viktor Korchnoi versus Boris Spassky — The waning chess year 2009 showed its diminishing strength by giving top billing to a match between two ancient chess warriors - Viktor Korchnoi and Boris Spassky. The duo played an eight-game match in Elista, Republic of Kalmykia, advertised as the Battle of the Giants. Chess fans could watch the play live, provided that they could read Cyrillic. This match featured two silver-haired gentlemen in unusually friendly combat, as no chess championships were involved. Spassky was his usual amiable self and Korchnoi was unusually amiable, even mellow. Spassky and Korchnoi were once bitter opponents contending for the world title. Spassky, 71, has been in virtual retirement for ...

Message: Its probably a good idea to play openings to fit your style of play. But, I have noticed there are many players who don't do this...or at least aren't consistent with this idea. A friend of mine is very good at tactics. He plays 1. f4 as white which can be quite tactical. But, on the other side of the board he always replies to 1. e4 with 1..c6 the caro Kann defence. And as for me my favorite opening as white is closed sicilian which can be quite position. But as black I prefer the tactical positions of Kings Indian, leningrad dutch or sicilian.

I remember reading an interview of some GM(I don't remember who) who was interviewed on the subject of style of play. He said that it is best not to have a style of play. He said it was better to be good at both tacticla and at positional play. You should pick a style you think will give your opponent the most trouble. But maybe for us mortals this is too ambitious. ——— Varuzhan Akobian is lucky in Las Vegas — The North American Open, one of the Continental Chess Association's largest annual tournaments, attracted 613 chess players to Las Vegas Dec. 26 to 29. The 99-player Open section, featuring nine grandmasters, ended in a five-way tie at 5 1/2 -1 1/2 among GMs Varuzhan Akobian (Glendale), Josh Friedel (Richmond, Calif.), Victor Mikhalevski (Israel), Alexander Shabalov (Pennsylvania) and Alex Yermolinsky (South Dakota). On tiebreak, Akobian, who drew three of his rivals, received the first prize of $3,990. Southern California master David Zimbeck tied for sixth place at 5-2 despite facing higher-rated opponents in his final five games. Zimbeck drew against three grandmasters. Alexander Grischuk, ...
