Subject: The dangers of winning a piece

Message:
Has anyone else noticed how winning a piece frequently leads to your being under pressure for a time?

Could there be some technical reason for this, deriving from the fact that your opponent gains a tempo --- unlike in an exchange, where he has to match your capture with a recapture?

That is the main reason that sacrificing a wing pawn is frequently sound. Wing pawns are a bit less valuable than center pawns, say two to two and one half tempos, and your opponent nearly always loses at least two tempos to take them. If you are in a position where a few tempos are important this kind of sacrifice should be considered and frequently not accepted.

If I give you a pawn, I expect the initiative.

If I give you a piece, either I blundered, or you almost certainly are sunk!

11 Chess Tournaments Over 2 Weeks Create a Competitive Logjam — The past couple of weeks should have dispelled any doubts about the vitality of chess. It would be hard to imagine a busier schedule. Last weekend, no fewer than eight chess tournaments were in play. In Odessa, Ukraine, the World Rapid Cup was won by Sergey Karjakin, a Ukrainian who now plays for Russia. In Malmo, Sweden, Anish Giri, 15, a Dutch chess grandmaster, took first in the Sigeman & Company tournament. And in Paraguay, Eduardas Rozentalis of Lithuania coasted to victory at the Asunción Copa Roggio. Meanwhile, 6 players out of a field of more than 200 tied for first at the Star Chess School tournament in Bhubaneswar, India, and Martyn Kravtsiv of ...

That's fine in theory, but the point is that things don't in practice always work out that way. There's a temptation to believe that if you've won a piece -- and I mean genuinely won, not as a sacrifice -- that you're somehow invulnerable. This can be very disconcerting if your opponent gets an initiative, albeit a temporary one.

Chess Notes — The decisive game in the Anand/Topalov chess match, Game 12, was oddly a well-trodden Queen’s Gambit Declined, the Lasker Variation. However, Anand as black varied slightly from the normal variation, electing to defer equality for a move and then getting a bishop for a knight but putting a queen bishop pawn at risk. In effect on move 21, Anand seemed to be willing to take a draw with the black pieces, but Topalov would not repeat moves. Topalov had weakened his king side slightly, and apparently ...

Perhaps there is a simpler explanation - if you are a piece down, you have no choice but to play for mate!

Gata Kamsky qualifies for 2011 candidates — American chess has a munificent sponsor, Rex Sinquefield. The retired fund manager has bankrolled the last two US chess championships, the latest with a $170,000 prize fund, in his Missouri home city Saint Louis where he has created a state of the art chess club which hosted the title event. The 2009 chess champion, Hikaru Nakamura, was stimulated to hone his inconsistent talent and is now ranked in the world top 20. Its format, a 24-player Swiss, included top US women plus Ray Robson, 15, who has since become a grandmaster. The 2010 championship last month went to Gata Kamsky, the former chess prodigy who went close to the world title in 1996, gave up to become ...

Tarrasch provides the technical reason

"Except for the mating move, there is no move that does not weaken some part of a position" (Siegbert Tarrasch).

Silman's studies of imbalances would seem to agree with Tarrasch's observation. Perhaps they are even based on his observation. According to Silman, a position should be analyzed in regards to the interplay between knights and bishops, pawn structure, space, material, files and squares, development, and initiative (he does not add king safety, which seems odd to me). In any case, an advantage gained in any one of these areas will invariably involve some sacrifice in at least one of the others, e.g., you gain a one-point advantage, but break up your bishop pair; you gain a piece, but demolish your pawn structure; you trade your knight for a rook, but lose the initiative... Your opponent's challenge, whenever you gain a material advatage, is to discover the way in which you have consequently become disadvantaged and use it against you, e.g., you damage your pawn structure taking a piece, so your opponent gains a 'pig on the seventh'; you have moved your strength away from the king, so your opponent attacks the pawn shield, etc. It's explained in depth in Silmamn's "Reassess Your Chess" and "The Amateur's Mind". In any case, winning a piece will frequently lead to your being under pressure if the opponent can see the imbalances and make them work in his favour.

The Catalan Chess Opening, part 2: the g2 bishop — How can White best exploit the potential of his fianchettoed kingside bishop? RB I'm a Catalan virgin, but I'm beginning to see some themes, in particular the power of the bishop on g2. Unfortunately the bishop's dominance of the h1-a8 diagonal is contested by the black bishop on b7. If I could somehow block its scope, my own bishop's potential would be enhanced. That's why I'm fixating on the c6 square. Ideally, I'd like to land a knight on c6, and maintain it there or force Black to swap off his bishop. The trouble is that ...

New Way to Crown Winners in Chess Games That End in Ties — Tournaments that end in ties are a problem in chess, and how to break them — or whether to even try — is a thorny topic. Some chess tournaments use complicated scoring systems to determine a winner. But what fan understands that a new chess champion is the player with the higher Sonneborn-Berger score? People want the winner to be decided in a competition, not by a calculator. Tie-breaker games have their own problems. If they keep ending in draws, it may be days or even weeks before one player wins. And White always has an advantage, so each player needs a turn at that color. So-called Armageddon games emerged a few years ago. These are one-game playoffs ...

psychological factors

Message:
For many players when they win a piece or even the exchange, they stop thinking. They don't make a plan. They simply try to trade off pieces to reach an ending a piece up...not paying careful attention to pawn weakness, the best squares to put a piece, development, and all of a sudden their opponent is making threats. They are forced to give up 1 pawn 2 pawns 3 pawns...full compensation. Sometimes they wake up in time to keep an advantage and win, sometimes they draw, but often they lose. My advice:always pay attention to what is happening. Never stop making a plan.

look at the Muzio Gambit, where White sacrifices one, and sometimes two pieces, getting an enduring initiative, and with best play shouldn't lose. Recently I've started two mini tournaments featuring Muzio, and there're still some free places.
