Subject: chess material

Message:
Where do people at GK get their books, cd's, boards, etc? So far I've used Amazon (quite efficient) and Chess Cafe (quick and knowledgable). I haven't tried Gameknot. I've tried USCF and have been disappointed in the past. I order three books from catalogue and they come back on three different dates, some weeks later. Maybe they've gotten better. You people in Europe might go to different vendors. I don't know. Just curious.

My purchase on books...

Message:
I get my books from local book stores... When ever I visit other busy mertopolitan areas I visit any major book stores or chess shops that might be in town... This way you can pre-read and see if the book has the material you are looking for... When your library collection on chess books grow, you will find it's harder to find new material or info on the game that you don't already posess... Though web sites do offer info on its books offered, it's still doesn't beat the book in hand before the purchase is made...

Working in London . . .

Message:
. . . I have the choice of two good quality chess shops within reasonably easy reach, and some of the larger bookshops have a wide stock as well. I don't therefore use mailorder - if I were living farther away from town I'd probably use the London Chess Centre website to order anything I wanted.

USCF & Chess Express

Message:
I got a nice wooden travel set from Chess Express ... delivered on time and all in one piece (also had the best price on this set among many competitors).

I got a tourney set (roll up board and large dbl-weighted pieces) from USCF. It was cheap (c. $25 incl. shipping). Took about 10 days to arrive ... a little slower than a typical Amazon shipment, but not bad.

I have gotten all my chess books from the local bookstore or from Amazon (Xmas sure makes me appreciate Amazon!).

One thing I do . . .

Message:
to see and read the book first is go to my local library and request the book interlibrary loan. That way I can get a book to evaluate from somewhere around the country before I make the decision. Most of the time I buy through Amazon nowadays.
Ebay has a collection of chess boards, tables and pieces, though there caveat emptor is in order.

eBay

Message:
The last dozen chess books I have acquired have all arrived via eBay.co.uk. I normally pick up brand new chess classics for a couple of pounds each. A cheap and convenient way to add to my Chess Library.......

At this time of the year the London Chess Centre normally send me a list of their bargain books, £5 each or 5 for £20. Some good titles amongst the list, but not as cheap as Ebay.

Kind regards,

Cal

Chess news:

Norwegian, 18, Is Youngest to Be Ranked No. 1 at Chess -- The chess world has a new No. 1 player, Magnus Carlsen of Norway, and he is only 18 years old — the youngest chess player ever to hold the rank. On Saturday, Mr. Carlsen beat Peter Leko, a Hungarian player now ranked No. 11, in the final round of a chess tournament in Moscow. Though Mr. Carlsen only tied for second in the tournament, his performance was good enough for him to edge out Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria for the top world ranking. Mr. Topalov, 34, did not compete in the tournament. Mr. Carlsen, who turns 19 on Nov. 30, is only the seventh No. 1-ranked chess player since the ranking system began in 1970. Garry Kasparov, the Russian former world chess champion ...

Kramnik Wins Tal Memorial, Carlsen Claims No. 1 Ranking -- In a wild and exciting final round, Vladimir Kramnik of Russia, the former world chess champion, drew his last game to claim the 2009 Tal Memorial tournament title. Kramnik led from Round 6 on and finished with three wins, six draws and no losses. Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine, Kramnik’s last round opponent, missed several chances to win and settled for a tie for second with Magnus Carlsen of Norway, who beat Peter Leko of Hungary. With his victory, Carlsen overtook Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria to become the world’s top-ranked chess player. At 18, Carlsen is the youngest chess player to be No. 1. Viswanathan Anand of India, the world chess champion, was in second place before ...

Flu virus keeps competitors in check at Tal Memorial -- Ten of the world elite are competing at Moscow's Tal Memorial, which ends today and is one of the strongest tournaments in chess history. But the winner in the chess event's first half was a flu virus which affected several grandmasters and encouraged a minimalist, cautious approach. Ukraine's Vasily Ivanchuk wore a face mask, and a high 80 per cent of the first five round games were drawn. The sickest chess player was Magnus Carlsen, 19, who had trained beforehand with Garry Kasparov and was expected to unleash some opening bombs in his campaign to become world No 1. But Norway's golden teen was close to defeat against Vlad Kramnik in the opening round and then ...
