on this one mate. I don't know what preceded the comments, but that was rather condescending. I don't think I would have advertised that one. (I'm not for advertising comments generally ... I do think there is SOME element of anonymity in OTB conversations given the volume of games played on this site).

By the way, how do you guys find the board numbers for linking FINISHED games? If I go into my game history and pull up a board it is nowhere to be found.

Chess Puzzles: King Tut in Studies — Last week we invoked memories of King Tut, presenting two chess compositions in which the black king is mated, surrounded by eight black pawns. You can find the solutions at the end of this column. This week we present a slightly different "King Tut motif. " Entombing the king in chess studies is usually done at the edge of the chessboard and often leads to spectacular stalemates. It can save draws in tournament games. Puzzle #1: A simple king tomb was created by the Austrian chess master, theoretician and writer Johann Berger in his important work on endgames, Theorie un Praxis der Endspiele, published in 1890. For One Teenage Chess Champion, Moscow Is a Charmed City — Le Quang Liem startled the chess world last year when he won the top section of the prestigious Aeroflot Open in Moscow. He was 18 and had just entered the top 100. The victory earned Le Quang an invitation to the Sparkassen Chess Meeting tournament in Dortmund, Germany. There he showed that his performance in Moscow had not been a fluke by finishing second. By September, he was ranked No. 41 in the world. His fall came just as quickly, first at the Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, where he struggled, and then at the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, where he lost all but one of his games. Le Quang, who is from Vietnam, began 2011 ranked No. 79. Last week, ...

Yes,unfortunate the previous comments are deleted as they come so nobody would know. I do attest though that my supposedly vitriolic comments were definitely provoked by my opponent.
Still,he graciously offered me a draw shortly after my post,so that doesn't really matter anymore. What does matter is that if A accuses B of being a patzer, and A claims a win in a drawn position, that's hypocrisy.

Le Quang Liem produces second shock win at Moscow Aeroflot — Moscow Aeroflot is the strongest and most fiercely competitive open chess tournament in the world, with a €20,000 first prize and nearly 50 entrants rated above 2600, the level of a high-class grandmaster. So it was remarkable that the winner in this week's Aeroflot 2011 should be the same Vietnamese teenager who scored a shock victory there in 2010. Last year Le Quang Liem won Aeroflot at 18, finished second in an elite chess event at Dortmund ahead of the former world chess champion Vlad Kramnik and soared up the world rankings. Le's hot streak then subsided until the second half of Tata Steel Wijk aan Zee last month, where he almost caught Luke McShane at the post. Now he ...

patzer or "blunderer",it means the same thing. I think I have some leeway to respond angrily if someone accuses me of being a blunderer and therefore uses that as an excuse to play a drawn game. Not that it has to be a lie,but it's just rude. No matter how poor my opponent was (OTB or online),I would not point out his blunders unless he specifically asked for criticism.

Ugandan girl, Phiona Mutesi leads chess revolution from the slums — Despite background the 15-year-old girl is already country's number two chess player and has competed at World Chess Olympiad. In a rickety church in a Ugandan slum, a girl's hand thrusts forward and a black bishop falls. The girl shows no emotion, though she knows the end is near. Striking quickly, silently, the black queen is toppled, and then the king. Only then does she smile. "You attacked too much," she tells the boy sitting opposite her on the wooden bench, a homemade board between them. Phiona Mutesi is 15. She has just finished primary school and is still learning to read. Her family is so poor they have been evicted from tiny, rented shacks more times than she ...

First Came the Machine That Defeated a Chess Champion — Before there was Watson, there was Deep Blue. In 1997, Deep Blue, another computer built by I.B.M., defeated the world chess champion, Garry Kasparov, in a six-game match. At the time, it was considered a stunning achievement and a significant step forward in the field of artificial intelligence. Some people said that a new era would be ushered in, one in which computers would perform many tasks — like air traffic control — that it once seemed only humans could do. That era has not quite materialized. But almost 14 years later, chess programs running on an average desktop computer can play better than Deep Blue, making its victory no longer seem as implausible. And while the research that ...

Every move is taking 3 days for a response. and we're currently back on a 21-day holiday.
All this without any form of provocation, apart from politely declining half a dozen draws (the last one of which 1 move ago !).
...and don't tell me about young players going to the end so that they can learn how to play end games. This opponent is rated over 1800.
Still, I'm a very patient guy. I worry about the mentality of some, though. I guess you have to feel sorry for them.

Message:
I am suprised and dismayed. Trotting out games to ridicule and embarass opponets is the lowest form of sportsmanship. I know you guys are better than this. Many players are not aware of chess history and culture especially the art of offering and accepting a draw. Another is knowing when to resign a game. Its simple really, you accept a draw when your opponet demenstrates that he knows the prolper way to draw the game. You resign a game when you opponet shows you he knows how to convert his advantage into a win. If he dosent resign a hopeless game just consider it a challenge to mate him in fewest number of moves and improve your technique. In any event if you conduct yourself as a gentleman and show your opponet the respect that we all deserve as individules he will more likely take your comments about chess culture to heart.

Message:
would be the Iron Age, your post has no value. Players are allowed to play to the last second or delay or prolong the game to the fullest extent within the rules. If they are not conforming to your standard it is quite rude to remind or reprimand them. Baseline is certainly correct in his comments and observations, this post belongs in the round file or Davy Jones Locker.

Of course they are 'allowed' to play until the end. I did not contest that. The fact is that "rules" are different from "etiquette". It is not "my" standard,it is a widely accepted standard to accept draws in a totally hopeless position. Many websites, including GK, do not recognize draws such as KB vs KB,KR vs KR,KQ vs KQ,etc(all pawnless). Playing for fifty moves to draw such games is a waste of time and energy. I had every right to take offense at slanderous comments on my playing ability (which may or may not be true, but etiquette demands that opponents refrain from derogatory or snide remarks,no matter how true). It is unfortunate that I was unable to save the prior remarks,as otherwise it makes ME look like the "aggressor" here, which isn't so.

If I was playing King + Rook vs an opponent's King + Rook, with no pawns, and I insisted on playing on by telling him that seeing his history of blunders,I hoped to skewer his King and Rook, that would be extremely rude and disrespectful of me.

Message:
It's not so much the refusal of the draw that angered me as much as the derogatory remarks that accompanied it. I should think that GK is a site where one can play without being told by a total stranger that you are a habitual blunderer and that is a reason to play on a drawn position. I guess not.
Another example I may provide is King + 2 Knights vs King. This is theoretically drawn, but can very well be won if the opponent blunders. Telling the opponent that he is a blunderer is not polite at all.

We all have our reasons for playing games out. I tend to play a few moves after all seems lost if I see any chance for a blunder, but I will not try for stalemate and so forth if it will just drag on and on and on. But here is why I never resign just because I am way down in material early in the game (OK, against a 1700 I would have resigned before this point in the game), but it reminds me of Silman's advice that being down in material never necessarily equates to a loss, it simply means it's time to get creative!

I am partially amused to see that this thread has not been turned to mud-slinging already, which would happen so easily in other forums or news groups. I’m thankful to all the people above keeping it within range. Also, looking some of the board give me some relief that I’m not alone having uneasy feelings on a very few games I had so far.

IMHO, meeting a nagging player is part of net play, whatever the game is. If you think you’ve seen enough from some of the examples above, you should try to get on Xbox online. They will call you with all kinds of names, which I don’t even dare to give some samples here, directly to your ears as it uses headsets, live voice comments. It could be one of the ideal place to test your anger management skills from your couch.

Just let it be. Chess is not a game for everyone. We won’t have too many of them anyway.
