Message: Hello,
I'd like to have the ability to enter in a position and see what the most favourable move is, with a table of who stands most favourably after that move. this is to help me with my openings so i can see what the best move is during my opening, even if the opponent makes a non-book move. would chess assistant or chessbase be the right product?

Message: I am not certain what you are asking. Any of the chessplaying programs that use the chessbase interface will allow you to enter a position and then analyze it for you. You can get the programs evaluation of as many alternatives as you like. Two caveats though:
1) Chess engines play middlegames much better than openings, that is why they have such extensive opening books.
2) Shredder seems to have a bug in its output function that causes the subsequent play to be reported wrong. Shredder is good at finding the correct move but the lines that it reports as best play are often laughable. I have seen it report that a move was +/= ( I can't remember the numeric evaluation), which seemed about right to me, but in the line that it gave as best play White dropped a queen and a couple of pieces for nothing!

Message: well i have fritz 8 and i can get it to analyze a position but i wanted a program that could analyse a database of human vs human games for a specific position and respond with what the most popular and succesful responses to that position were.

10/23/2003 02:27:10 play online chess | Fritz 8
Message: With Fritz 8 the best you can have is the Fritz Opening book with columns of statistics in it: how often the move is played, players avarage ELO, performance, score.
No opening book can help you if your oponent plays a non-book move. It is just a non-book move, so it isn't in the opening book. Think for yourself then.

Message: chessbase 8 has a tool that generates an opening report. It scans a database for games containing the position and reports 'best' lines of play based upon how different moves have done.

10/23/2003 04:54:02 play online chess | But do not use this at GK
Message: These are move generators and are very illegal to use at GK, or most any correspondence group. Databases (such as Chessbase) and books are legal. Shredder and Fritz are very illegal.

Message: Q20: What is considered cheating? How to report cheaters?
A: It's quite simple -- you can not use anything besides your own brain, and you can not consult anyone besides yourself. That includes chess programs, chess engines or chess computers, your friends, colleagues etc. etc. Chess books and game/move databases are allowed (as they are permitted in correspondence chess too). Feel free to analyze your games with chess engines or discuss them with your friends after the game is over, but not while the game is still in progress. If you suspect someone is cheating, please contact webmaster with a formal complaint. Don't forget to include specific details of why you think someone is cheating.
Best wishes
Cairo

To me it sounds like mbeaver wants a program that gives statistics of each move that has been played before...? Like 1.e4 A) 1...e6 +2000 =500 -1500 B) 1...c5 +1999 =499 -1501
This is legal of course but if we go back to your original post...

...It does not necessarily tell the best move let alone who stands better. Sometimes certain line scores well at first, then Mr Kasparov finds a new move and no one plays the line anymore, BUT 5.000.000-game database claims +30 =5 -5 even though in reality the position is dead equal or perhaps even better for black :-)

Message: Chess Assistant has this option you want. Chessbase too, but I prefer Chess Assistant's layout. It gives you percentages of success et al.
Bookup is also good for this.

Message: You can use them *after* the game is over(especially if you lost) and rehash it as much as you like. But not during the game,as it is illegal, unethical, and most importantly, you can't really savour the taste of victory. You don't want to be a handicapped emperor watching his general win the war:)

Message: does one thing that I don't think Chess Assistant does. It calculates performance ratings. When looking at an opening report or an opening tree database it gives you the percentage score, the average rating of the people that played the move, a break out of win, loss, and draw record, and the performance rating achieved by the players of the move. Something you will run across not infrequently is a move played a minority of the time that has a high score but was played by strong players against weak players and the score actually represents a bad performance for the move.

Chess news:
Chess Opening tips -- Like many games of skill, chess is easy to learn and fun to play — but difficult to master. Although the goal is to checkmate the enemy king, don't expect an early knockout. The opening is roughly defined as the first dozen or so moves. The purpose is not to win outright, but to reach a playable middle game. By following these simple guidelines you should be able to sit down and play an intelligent game of chess. Here are some chess opening tips: 1. Always play to dominate the middle of the board. Occupy, attack or watch the center. 2. Develop ALL your men fast, not just one or two. The opening is a race for rapid and continuous development. 3. Develop knights before ...
A Trove of Fischer Photographs Surfaces -- Photographs taken during trips that Bobby Fischer made to the Philippines in 1967 and 1973, after he became world chess champion, have appeared in a group of three videos on YouTube. Descriptions of the videos say that they were part of the belongings left behind by Fischer in a storage locker in Pasadena, Calif. Those belongings were bought at auction earlier this year by Rex A. Sinquefield, a financier who sponsored this year’s U.S. Chess Championship and U.S. Women’s Chess Championship. The photographs show Fischer being feted and entertained by President Ferdinand Marcos, the leader of the Philippines, and his wife, Imelda. The scenes are, in some ways ...
Anna Zatonskih Defends U.S. Chess Championship Title -- The United States women’s chess champion, Anna Zatonskih, easily defended her title last week and dominated the championship tournament in St. Louis. Afterward, Zatonskih, who has a 2 ½-year-old daughter, joked, “I am trying to prove that motherhood did something good.” In the chess tournament, which ended on Tuesday, Zatonskih yielded only one draw and scored 8.5 out of a possible 9 points. The victory was a relief for Zatonskih, who had struggled recently, particularly at the Women’s World Team Championship last month in China, where she scored only 2 points in 7 games. In a telephone interview, Zatonskih said she wants to have another child, but ...
