I have heard a quote along the lines of "play the opening like a book, the middle game like a magician and the end game like a machine" I find that very helpful but exactly HOW do you play like a magician? People can read up on books and can play for hours with a program, trying to get better. But must we be born with chess skills to be able to play a dazzling middle game?

how do you play like a magician?? just go check out TAL'S games they were a great example of magical play. of course they were played OTB . TAL'S play was often magical and brilliant but not always sound. maybe computers will destroy all romance and much so called brilliant play on the internet . just because of the ability to review research and analyze by machine . thats why I refuse to use anything but books (alittle) and my brain. I rebel against replacing my moves decision by those made for ME by a blank machine!!!!!! I never will be GREAT but at least I will ALWAYS play with HONOR and Integrity!! So i say to all that use machines to find their moves for them then take credit for what IT did , you are only fooling yourself. We all know that their are many that do this very thing!! I may be alone in this way of thinking or just maybe at the wrong site . but my HONOR is always intact . a great subject again thugette_babe !!!! yours bluebabygirl

I sense you are upset by cheaters. I generally find it better for me to play someone or something superior to me. Learning is what matters.
What I truly suspect about you is not your insistence on honour or integrity, which is obviously in tact with you, but rather your art. You may be offended by submitting your artistic needs to the mechanism of mindless, artless machines.
Personally, I find no conflict with machines exploring the rationale for what appears magical. Just the opposite. I find my understanding greatly enhanced, and that understanding allows me to create more deeply on the chess board.
For me, machines are but guides to understanding. It is the artist's duty to explain the understanding behind the correct move for those players aspiring to the author's level.
Since you wish to be a writer, bluebabygirl, you may wish to ponder the wisdom of attempting to explain the magic of the middlegame in book form, even with the help of computers.
I am a chess author, even at my level of expertise. If you need some guidance, advice, or suggestions, just let me know.

you said it much better than I and you are exactly right . i feel my artistic efforts are being usurped by mindless machine play. and my love for the greatest game that man will ever know is being crushed by that collossal behemonth the super chess program. that computers will have difficulty ever matching the imagination of the human mind.
The wonderful ideas that are created by our minds and then moulded into practice by methodical and analytical thought processes - and also the long range vision that we are blessed with, sets us apart.
If anything I think that the stronger that computers become, the more humans will have to dig deeper into their unused brain potential.
The middlegame is a magical part of the game - and is usually rich in possiblities waiting to be discovered and turned into workable plans by our inventive minds!

Reffering back to the romance era! I thought the beauty of chess shown through at that point in time. There may have been bad defense but the attacks were "magical". is to experiment - try playing fast games in realtime, where you are not concerned about losing, and just let your mind become used to planning and looking ahead.
There are a lot of sites where you can watch GM's play quick games - after a while you will be predicting their moves!

How do you play like a magician?... Formulating a plan around an opening and seeing it through to the end game (middlegame) is where the magic comes from... Knowing how and when to look for tactical combiations, and when tactical combinations dont exist is just some of the knowledge one must obtain to create this magic you seek... So the magic comes from a love for the game, and plenty of hard work in study and the pushing of many wooden pieces...
To be capable of conducting an endgame to the distant goal with clarity, firmness, and complete familiarity with all its tricks and traps is the sign of the first class Master... Mieses...

I think most excellent advice that you gave . very true and directly to the point . that i think is were the magic comes from , hard work and most importantly a great LOVE for the game. for tactics and love of the game i can name two great players - TAL and Frank Marshall - for nobody loved the game more than him. just my opinion . i hope this stirs no controversy seems my remarks are noted for just that very thing . again thanks thugette_babe for posting such a great subject !!! yours bluebabygirl
