Subject: Middle Games

Message:
I have heard a quote along the lines of "play the opening like a book, the middle game like a magician and the end game like a machine" I find that very helpful but exactly HOW do you play like a magician? People can read up on books and can play for hours with a program, trying to get better. But must we be born with chess skills to be able to play a dazzling middle game?

how do you play like a magician?? just go check out TAL'S games they were a great example of magical play. of course they were played OTB . TAL'S play was often magical and brilliant but not always sound. maybe computers will destroy all romance and much so called brilliant play on the internet . just because of the ability to review research and analyze by machine . thats why I refuse to use anything but books (alittle) and my brain. I rebel against replacing my moves decision by those made for ME by a blank machine!!!!!! I never will be GREAT but at least I will ALWAYS play with HONOR and Integrity!! So i say to all that use machines to find their moves for them then take credit for what IT did , you are only fooling yourself. We all know that their are many that do this very thing!! I may be alone in this way of thinking or just maybe at the wrong site . but my HONOR is always intact . a great subject again thugette_babe !!!! yours bluebabygirl

I sense you are upset by cheaters. I generally find it better for me to play someone or something superior to me. Learning is what matters.

What I truly suspect about you is not your insistence on honour or integrity, which is obviously in tact with you, but rather your art. You may be offended by submitting your artistic needs to the mechanism of mindless, artless machines.

Personally, I find no conflict with machines exploring the rationale for what appears magical. Just the opposite. I find my understanding greatly enhanced, and that understanding allows me to create more deeply on the chess board.

For me, machines are but guides to understanding. It is the artist's duty to explain the understanding behind the correct move for those players aspiring to the author's level.

Since you wish to be a writer, bluebabygirl, you may wish to ponder the wisdom of attempting to explain the magic of the middlegame in book form, even with the help of computers.

I am a chess author, even at my level of expertise. If you need some guidance, advice, or suggestions, just let me know.

Asia Games Recognize Chess as a Sport — The idea that chess is a sport seems to be gaining wider acceptance. Studies of chess players during competitions have found that their heart and respiration rates become elevated. Top chess players say they exercise regularly to keep in shape because they feel they cannot play their best otherwise. And there is anecdotal evidence to support them. Five years ago, Vladimir Kramnik, a Russian grandmaster who was then world chess champion, began to falter in tournaments. Doctors diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis, and he began receiving treatments and stopped playing for six months. Once the arthritis was brought under control, Kramnik returned to competition, and his results improved. In 2006, chess was ...

you said it much better than I and you are exactly right . i feel my artistic efforts are being usurped by mindless machine play. and my love for the greatest game that man will ever know is being crushed by that collossal behemonth the super chess program. If and more likely when that happens will be a sad sad day for mankind!!! maybe im going into realm of man against machine . but more of it is about my art!! and I greatly appreciate your offer of guidance and advice . Thank you so very much , you are a true compassionate gentleman . just your advice and offfer have cheered me greatly . AM I THE ONLY ONE THAT FEELS THIS WAY ABOUT MACHINE TECHNOLOGY AND CHESS?? and more important am I wrong about it ??? I will continue my efforts at becoming a writer and maybe this depression about chess will send me away from chess onto the path of a writer only !!! yours bluebavbygirl

Larry Evans, the Chess Player — Larry Melvyn Evans, who died Monday at 78, is justly hailed for his role in helping Bobby Fischer win the world chess championship in 1972 and for his productive career as a writer. But he also had a substantial record as a chess player and won the United States Championship five times. He was never the country’s top player. He was overshadowed when he was younger by Samuel Reshevsky (against whom he had a large negative score), then by Bobby Fischer and finally by a whole new generation, led by Yasser Seirawan and Larry Christiansen. Dr. Anthony Saidy, an international master who knew Evans well, said that growing up in the United States probably handicapped Evans in terms of his chess ...

Aronian Wins World Blitz Chess Championship — Levon Aronian is having a pretty good month. Actually, he’s have a pretty good year. Aronian, an Armenian chess grandmaster, who has recently risen to No. 3 in the world (along the way becoming only the sixth player to crack the 2,800 rating level), won the World Blitz Championship in Moscow on Thursday. The victory followed his tie for first in the Tal Memorial, which ended Sunday, and his recent stellar performances at the European Club Cup, where he scored 4.5 out of 6 points, and the Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, in which he scored 7.5 out of 10. In the blitz championship — where each player started with three minutes and had two seconds added to their time after each ...

I tend to think

Message:
that computers will have difficulty ever matching the imagination of the human mind.
The wonderful ideas that are created by our minds and then moulded into practice by methodical and analytical thought processes - and also the long range vision that we are blessed with, sets us apart.
If anything I think that the stronger that computers become, the more humans will have to dig deeper into their unused brain potential.
The middlegame is a magical part of the game - and is usually rich in possiblities waiting to be discovered and turned into workable plans by our inventive minds!

Supporting Chess Development. Question: Some readers say the Committee for Assistance to Chess Developing Countries has done little or nothing to assist some countries or regions where there is little money and few skilled players. Your response? Fortunately they are mistaken. Thanks to the activities of the committee, all developing countries receive financial and technical help on a regular basis. I would note that ...

Romance and Chess

Message:
Reffering back to the romance era! I thought the beauty of chess shown through at that point in time. There may have been bad defense but the attacks were "magical". I have tried to analyze some of tal's games but I ended up getting a headache after that lol. The middle game is where I struggle so I hope all of you can help me through this! lol

Question: Title matches and candidates events have been delayed, postponed and moved multiple times in the last few years because of organizational confusion. How do you plan to fix these problems? I must correct you: After we shifted to the match system for the world champion title, it was played in accordance with the approved FIDE schedule. That was the case with the unified matches between ...

My advice to you thugette_babe

Message:
is to experiment - try playing fast games in realtime, where you are not concerned about losing, and just let your mind become used to planning and looking ahead.
There are a lot of sites where you can watch GM's play quick games - after a while you will be predicting their moves!

How do you play like a magician?... Formulating a plan around an opening and seeing it through to the end game (middlegame) is where the magic comes from... Knowing how and when to look for tactical combiations, and when tactical combinations dont exist is just some of the knowledge one must obtain to create this magic you seek... So the magic comes from a love for the game, and plenty of hard work in study and the pushing of many wooden pieces...

To be capable of conducting an endgame to the distant goal with clarity, firmness, and complete familiarity with all its tricks and traps is the sign of the first class Master... Mieses...
