Message: have been playing around with the grob in 5 min.
games.i'm having pretty good results, but i notice none of you really good players ever use it.
i realize there are much better openings than 1g4,
but it does have have an element of surprise, and
seems to lead to some unique attack possibilities.
i would like to hear from you good players,do you
ever play the grob?..if not,why not? thanks

Message: There are several issues with playing 1. g4 - the main one being that it weakens the King side pawn structure and if blacks plays aggressively will eventually force the White King to castle long and be in a more exposed position. It does develop the light-squared bishop abd advances the pawn to control the f5/h5 squares so I guess that it could be useful in some instances.

Message: It is an opening I used to play in blitz chess. It does OK in blitz chess for an attacking player but in internet chess, it just doesnt hold up against a strong player.

——— On Chess: World-title foes differ on workouts — In an era of 14-year-old grandmasters and Internet-nurtured chess prodigies, 43-year-old Boris Gelfand of Israel is an anomaly. After 20 years of being near the top of the chess heap, he is playing a match — his first — for the world chess championship. It will take place against the current chess champion, 41-year-old Viswanathan Anand — also one of the older set — who has played several title matches. Anand insists that a rigorous conditioning regime — including trips to the gym — is a prerequisite for success at the top level. Gelfand has a more nonchalant point of view. “It strikes me,” he recently told journalist Yuri Vasiliev, “that the basis of success is a healthy way of life. You need to ...

Message: Plays this opening sometimes. This use to be one of my favorite openings and I have had some good results against surprizingly good players.
The opening itself has considerable psychological impact, but it does little to improve white position. If black opens sensibly he stands a good chance.
I will happily play against you, with both white and black, playing the grob, if you like. ——— A Summer of Struggles Pays Dividends — Hou Yifan is the women’s world chess champion, but she is also only 17 and continues to evolve as a chess player, which should scare her rivals. Hou struggled this summer playing against mostly men. But the best way to improve is to seek out the best competition, and Hou’s trial by fire seems to be paying dividends. Last month, she dominated the first leg of the Women’s Grand Prix in Russia, a tournament that included most of the world’s best chess players. (Judit Polgar, the most skilled woman to play the game, was not there; she does not compete in women-only chess events.) Last week, Hou did it again by winning the Grand Prix’s second leg in China. Both times, she finished with ...

Alan ——— New book sheds light on Magnus Carlsen's link-up with Garry Kasparov — A new Norwegian book sheds light on the mysterious episode two years ago when the all-time No1, Garry Kasparov, briefly became the chess coach of Norway's brilliant 20-year-old Magnus Carlsen, who now tops the world chess rankings. It was billed as the ultimate pairing which would elevate Carlsen to new heights, but after less than six months they went their separate ways. The journalist Hallgeir Opedal followed Carlsen for a year, much as Life magazine's Brad Darrach did with Bobby Fischer in 1972. Opedal also had direct access to Carlsen and his father/manager, Henrik. The partnership's great success came at the start in 2009 when Carlsen won in Nanjing, China, with ...

Message: I recently played in a Grob minitournament (actually I still play one game from that tournament) here on GK. First move g4 it is called. You can have a look at the games. ——— Kings vs. Queens: Almost perfect — The Kings vs. Queens chess tournament ended in a victory for the guys, mainly due the Herculean effort of St. Louis resident Hikaru Nakamura, who scored an almost perfect 9.5 points out of 10 games. The event pitted top female chess players against strong male competition in an interesting format. Unfortunately for the Queens, female world No. 1 Judit Polgar was forced to withdraw from the tournament just days before the first round, and her absence paved the way for Hikaru to rack up some serious points. Judit was busy beating the world's best men in Khanty-Mansisk, Russia, at the World Chess Cup. The World Cup is a knockout event with many of the world's top chess players. Judit's American fans were ...

383" target="_blank">gameknot.com/mt.pl?383 ——— Chess World Cup: Peter Svidler All the Way — It was the most amazing move of the 2011 Chess World Cup in Khanty Mansiysk, Russia, a wonderful coup de grâce you don't see every day. And it could have been enough to play it, go home and enjoy it for years to come. But it was not all Peter Svidler had done at the World Cup this month. The six-time chess champion of Russia easily carved through the 128-player knockout tournament and won it almost as efficiently and convincingly as Novak Djokovic did the tennis Grand Slams at Wimbledon, Melbourne and New York this year. It was Svidler's greatest result. Svidler defeated his countryman Alexander Grischuk 2.5-1.5 in the final match. Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine finished third, eliminating ...

Message: The reason you won the game so easily is because White developed poorly and allowed his King to be smothered. I do agree that the grob is a weak opening but I have played against strong opponents that were able to establish a threatening position and one which maintained equality. Bad choice of moves for your opponent!

Message: a difficult topic, because in the above mentioned game my opponent was sportsmanlike and resigned. A lot of people doesn't. And in that case, with the same situation on the board, it is not a quick win anymore.
