——— Asia Games Recognize Chess as a Sport — The idea that chess is a sport seems to be gaining wider acceptance. Studies of chess players during competitions have found that their heart and respiration rates become elevated. Top chess players say they exercise regularly to keep in shape because they feel they cannot play their best otherwise. And there is anecdotal evidence to support them. Five years ago, Vladimir Kramnik, a Russian grandmaster who was then world chess champion, began to falter in tournaments. Doctors diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis, and he began receiving treatments and stopped playing for six months. Once the arthritis was brought under control, Kramnik returned to competition, and his results improved. In 2006, chess was ...

Message: Had a look at the board and agree 18...Nd4 looks good. ——— Larry Evans, the Chess Player — Larry Melvyn Evans, who died Monday at 78, is justly hailed for his role in helping Bobby Fischer win the world chess championship in 1972 and for his productive career as a writer. But he also had a substantial record as a chess player and won the United States Championship five times. He was never the country’s top player. He was overshadowed when he was younger by Samuel Reshevsky (against whom he had a large negative score), then by Bobby Fischer and finally by a whole new generation, led by Yasser Seirawan and Larry Christiansen. Dr. Anthony Saidy, an international master who knew Evans well, said that growing up in the United States probably handicapped Evans in terms of his chess ...

Message: Nd4 is probably the most sound move but we should also consider activating the dark-squared bishop with Bh6 - pinning the Knight to the Queen and then follow up with a central pawn advance. ——— Aronian Wins World Blitz Chess Championship — Levon Aronian is having a pretty good month. Actually, he’s have a pretty good year. Aronian, an Armenian chess grandmaster, who has recently risen to No. 3 in the world (along the way becoming only the sixth player to crack the 2,800 rating level), won the World Blitz Championship in Moscow on Thursday. The victory followed his tie for first in the Tal Memorial, which ended Sunday, and his recent stellar performances at the European Club Cup, where he scored 4.5 out of 6 points, and the Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, in which he scored 7.5 out of 10. 5/30/2003 11:02:25 Play online chess | Qc5 has benefits
Message: Qc5 guards d6, making Bh6 or Bg7 possible
Qc5 puts Queen more into center.
Qc5 give opportunity to make a7-a5 later
to guard b4
this will free other pieces for more interesting tasks
White will probably next do Bh5+
which destroys black castle.
so 18... Qc5 19. Bh5+ can be the moves to come

Message: Yes, ...Qc5 has benefits. It defends d6 (freeing the Bishop) and c6. I was worried about white playing Bf3. If ...Qc5 is played, I dont think Bf3 is much to worry about anymore. However...
I dont think white will play 19.Bh5. I think stronger would be to expect 19.Nd5

Message: Yes, Qc5 is a good move -- I'd vote for it. However, this game is so old, 8 or more months old, that we have to get in contact with brunetti to remind him of the game and ask if he's willing to resume play. If I remember correctly, the reason the game stagnated was that people gradually posted fewer and fewer ideas about what to do next and eventually there was quite a lag between moves.
Good luck in getting it going again!

Message: Allows 19.Rxb4 Qxa2 20.Qc3 Kd8 (This move HAS to be played! since 21.Rxd4 followed by 22.Qc6 is threatened!) 21.Rxd4 (21.Rb2 may be better) exd 22.Qxd4 I'm not sure how to continue here for Black but lets try 22... Qa5 but then... 23.Kf2! followed by Bf3 and I would assess that white stands better.
This final position is tricky to analyse... one is tempted to say that black has a better chance due to his a pawn. In fact, if you remove every piece, I'm willing to say that black does have better chances. However... white still has pieces on the board and I do not see anyway that black could forceably exchange them. Last and least... the pieces that white has on the board... are well placed and better then black's... despite being the exchange up, black has a sorry bishop that will spend its time defending pawns AND... 2 Rooks with nowhere to go. Let's not forget a king stuck in the center.

Message: I'd be interested in continuing this match if brunetti ever gets the time and there's enough interest. However, if the match is not resumed, then perhaps brunetti would like to see the old analysis threads (he requested to see them eventually at the beginning of the match). If so, it wouldn't be too hard to dig up the old threads and provide links.

Message: .. for not having ansered your posts earlier, but i've
been extremely busy recently.
The reason why this game stopped is 2 things:
1. The Voting-function used was ended by the
company that hosted it :-(
2. I didn't have the time to keep the site updated.
brunetti agreed to continue this later, so if i ask
him kindly we can start the game up again.
If doing so it will be hosted at my NEW chess-site
that i am developing right now and that hopefully
is up and running in mostly 1 month :-)
The new site will be somthing completely different
from the old, and MUCH BETTER in any way !
I will host the GKCM-Bunch-game, puzzles, tutorials,
a forum for discussing chess, an internal PM system
and MUCH, MUCH more..... (suggestions welcome).
So if you just keep your head cool for a couple of
weeks it will all be there for everyone to join :-)
Best regards,
Peter sjoroos
