Chess: When one false move is fatal — With so few chess pieces left on the board, absolute precision is essential. Carlsen-L'Ami, Tata Steel 2011. What should Black play? This is from the top section of the recent Wijk aan Zee chess tournament and continues our theme of defence. RB: When I look at this I get the same feeling of panic and gloom I get when my 11-year-old son brings me his maths homework for my so-called help. His questions require a simple precise answer, and that's what's needed here – absolute precision, no spinning off into creative fantasy. With so few pieces on the board, one false move is invariably fatal. What's the threat? If the Black king moves to the h-file, there's always the danger of ...

Nakamura Wins Tata Steel Chess Tournament — Hikaru Nakamura of the United States emerged as the winner of the elite section of the Tata Steel chess tournament in the Netherlands after a spate of draws in the final round on Sunday. Nakamura finished with 9 points, a half point ahead of Viswanathan Anand of India, the world chess champion. Magnus Carlsen of Norway and Levon Aronian of Armenia tied for third, with 8 points each, while Vladimir Kramnik of Russia and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France were another half point back, tied for fifth. In the final round, Nakamura had Black against Wang Hao of China. Rather than act like a wallflower and try not to lose, Nakamura played aggressively, even offering to sacrifice ...

At 79, ‘Viktor the Terrible’ Outsmarts an 18-Year-Old — The game’s mental and physical toll eventually forces most top chess players to stop competing. And those who continue to play tend to avoid the elite chess tournaments where the pressure is greatest. Then there is Viktor Korchnoi. He was a top chess player for more than 30 years and competed for the world title three times. The last of those battles was in 1981, when he was 50. Four years ago, when he was 75, he was still ranked No. 85 in the world. Korchnoi will be 80 in March, and his ranking has slipped to No. 460. But he can still be a formidable opponent, and he has lost little of his zest for competition. (He earned the nickname Viktor the Terrible partly because of ...

Nakamura Wins Again and Seizes Lead of Tata Steel Chess Tournament — In an exceptional performance that combined spirited attack and defense, Hikaru Nakamura beat Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia on Friday in Round 11 of the Tata Steel chess tournament in the Netherlands. Nakamura’s co-leader after Round 10 (and 8 and 6 and 4), Viswanathan Anand of India, the world chess champion, only drew against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France. That allowed Nakamura to once again take control of the elite section, with two rounds to play. Nakamura’s victory was his sixth of the tournament. He now has 8 points, followed by Anand, with 7.5, Levon Aronian of Armenia, who also drew Friday, who has 7, and Vladimir Kramnik of Russia and Magnus Carlsen of ...

THERE ARE MORE , OH YES MANY MORE LEADING UP TO TODAY'S GREATS . however only RUBINSTEIN COULD PLAY LIKE A RUBINSTEIN!!!!!SEE SEE HOW EASY IT IS TO GO FOR ONLY YOUR OWN PERSONAL FAVORITE OR HERO ! I will now admit that there is a possibility that RUBINSTEIN is THAT great only to me .I also say that each one named above was a god to me speaking only in terms of chess!! I guess im finallly admitting that other peoples favorite or hero is or was as great as MY Rubinstein!! man that hurt to say. but im coming around to that conclusion mostly because TAL was so very great that he actually started taking RUBINSTEIN'S PLACE IN MY DREAMS man that hurt to say . enough exposing my chess soul to you guys , yours bluebabygirl

Betting on Chess — London oddsmakers allow wagering on everything else, so it is probably not surprising that they also take bets on chess. In the Tata Steel chess tournament currently be played in the Netherlands, one bookmaker called BestBetting seems to have Viswanathan Anand of India, the world chess champion, who is currently tied for the lead, as the favorite (9 to 10, meaning if someone bets $10 and Anand wins, the bettor only wins $9). Levon Aronian of Armenia, who is tied for third, a half-point behind Anand and Hikaru Nakamura of the United States, is the next betting favorite (13 to 10; wager $10 and if he is first, win $13), while Nakamura has the next longest odds (5 to 2). That Nakamura is ...

yes im an interesting person . and you have to be able to get freaky to understand it . it mostly means being able to imagine something on the board thats very far in future play without exact calculation, similiar to intuition , at least thats my way of viewing it . and sometimes no matter how unlikely for that exact order of moves to happen, no matter how illogical or no matter how many other good or strong moves nevertheleess it happens the way you envision. I call that freaky!!! anyone else had similiar thing ?? yours bluebabygirl

in chess there are only 30 or so things you can do each move. that's not many. Life offers far more opportunities, and you don't have to wait 14 days for each move. So why am I stuck here playing chess? I guess I like the simple things. GRRRR
