5/23/2003 06:05:41 Play online chess | Subject: Suggestion
Message: People have been asking some of GK top players to play a "tutorial" game where he explains his moves and plans, plus gives people a chance to discuss about the game. I have somewhat similar suggestion...
If any of GK top players is willing to annotate one of his games, how about a thread where
1) The player - lets call him MENTOR from now on heh - sends one of his games WITHOUT annotation (move list only!)
2) Readers will be given a week for annotating the game as well as they can - no computer programs or help from friends. Readers arent allowed to post their own annotations until two weeks has passed (this prevents situations where readers are tempted to read the analysis by others...)
3) After the week has passed, readers post their own annotations. This allows readers to see how other players think (always interesting!)
4) After few days, mentor posts the game WITH annotation. This allows readers to see how GK top players think plus compare their thinking and analysis to the true maestros of GK :-)
5) After the mentor has posted his analysis, people have a chance to start a discussion where they can compare their annotations to the annotations by others.
NOTE - In order to make this work people have to send their own annotations! I know many are tempted to analyze the game without sending their own annotation for everyone to see, but if one overcomes the fear of sending less than perfect analysis (hey, who of us is Kasparov anyway?), I am sure this could be both instructive and fun experience!
So people, tell me what you think?

Message: to make a fool out of myself in front of everyone.... :) Count me in. ——— Kings vs. Queens: Almost perfect — The Kings vs. Queens chess tournament ended in a victory for the guys, mainly due the Herculean effort of St. Louis resident Hikaru Nakamura, who scored an almost perfect 9.5 points out of 10 games. The event pitted top female chess players against strong male competition in an interesting format. Unfortunately for the Queens, female world No. 1 Judit Polgar was forced to withdraw from the tournament just days before the first round, and her absence paved the way for Hikaru to rack up some serious points. Message: Interesting!! i would like to join this ——— Chess World Cup: Peter Svidler All the Way — It was the most amazing move of the 2011 Chess World Cup in Khanty Mansiysk, Russia, a wonderful coup de grâce you don't see every day. And it could have been enough to play it, go home and enjoy it for years to come. But it was not all Peter Svidler had done at the World Cup this month. The six-time chess champion of Russia easily carved through the 128-player knockout tournament and won it almost as efficiently and convincingly as Novak Djokovic did the tennis Grand Slams at Wimbledon, Melbourne and New York this year. It was Svidler's greatest result. Svidler defeated his countryman Alexander Grischuk 2.5-1.5 in the final match. Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine finished third, eliminating ...

That is GREAT peppe_l! I'm about to post my complete analysis of my own game when I read this thread. I think I'd better cancel my posting and wait for this one.
One thing that I'm not sure is the maximum length of the text per post. ——— Peter Svidler of Russia Wins World Chess Cup — Peter Svidler, a Russian grandmaster, won the 2011 World Chess Cup on Monday by holding his opponent, Alexander Grischuk, a fellow Russian, to a draw. That clinched the match for Svidler by a score of 2.5 to 1.5. The World Chess Cup, held this year in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, is a biennial competition that has become an important part of the process to select a world chess champion. The top three at this year’s tournament qualify for the Candidates Matches, so Grischuk will advance along with Svidler. Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine won a match against Ruslan Ponomariov, another Ukrainian, on Monday to claim the third spot. For his victory, Svidler earned $96,000, after expenses. Grischuk received ...

RB: This week the boot is on the other foot and it's Dan's turn to puzzle over the position. I chose this position because in some ways it seems a very unFischer-like game. Among the legendary former world chess champion's most notable qualities were clarity and control. It's hard to see those qualities at work here. In fact – is it treasonable to suggest? – this looks like the kind of position chess amateurs like me might stumble into. Let's see what the grandmaster makes of it. Message: So.. do any GK top players volunteer? ——— Soviet Union’s Fall Gave Birth to a Host of New Rivalries — The Soviet Union dominated chess for so many years partly because it could tap the talent pool in such a vast area. But after the Soviet system collapsed two decades ago, many of those chess players began playing for the independent countries that rose from the ashes — nations that quickly assumed their own place among the chess elite. In the World Chess Federation’s current list, which is based on players’ individual rankings, Russia is No. 1, and three other former Soviet republics are in the top 10: Ukraine at No. 2; Armenia, No. 6; and Azerbaijan, No. 10. Message:
My intention was just to throw a "beta" idea so that there will be continuations from other people. After that post I was also planning to write my analysis on one of Cyrano's game (not mine), and then after that, my game against Cyrano (Sicilian Najdorf).
The problem with my analysis of my own game is obvious. If you look at my past game history, none is seriously played. It was difficult for me to choose one of my game, and it was even more difficult to write the analysis. This is because I don't think that it is usefull to write "I should have done this, I should have done that". But because this idea had been put in "great place" by peppe_l, I don't want to make a fool out of myself in front of everyone.... ;) And this is serious, the game to be analyzed MUST be a quality game.
I hope the chosen game thrown by the MENTOR will be a positional game, to make the analysis less subjective.

GK certainly has lots and lots of great players, and I am certain many of them are brilliant annotators as well (Atrifix I hope you are reading this :-)))
Indiana-jay has a point IMO - it is defitenitely a plus if the game has interesting positional maneuvering, because planning and evaluating positional factors is one of the areas that are most difficult to learn and understand. Also that type of game might generate some interesting discussion since one would have to look past forced tactical lines etc.

5/23/2003 10:33:43 Play online chess | here's a very short game of mine:
Message: i'm white
1.e4,c6 2.d4,d5 3.e5,Bf5 4.h4,h6 5.g4,Bd7 6.h5,
(i think i should have played c4 instead or Bd3.)
6...Qc8 7.Bh3
(Bd2 is much better, i think. i can't develop my king-knight now unless i play g5 or f3 first. bishop has better scope at d2. The bishop looks very misplaced on h3 later in the game too. even f3 would be better than Bh3 i think)
7...c5 8.c3
(i didn't want to play 8.dxc because of 8...e6. and if 9.b4, then 9...b6. the king bishop gets developed on strong squares either b4 or c5),
8..Nc6 9.f4?,cxd 10.cxd,Nxd4 11.Nc3
(not 11.Qxd4 because 11...Qxc1+ 12.Qd1,Qxf4 and i'm in very bad position)
11...Qc5!
gives me a lot of trouble i think
12.Nf3?
(but i don't have many good moves. maybe Be3 would be best. i think i was scared from making the move because the Nc2+ looks so pretty. but after 12.Be3,Nc7+13.QxN,Qxe3+14.Ne2 i think i'm doing ok! much better than what follows 12.Nf3)
12...Nxf3 13.Qxf3,Bc6 14.Bd2,e6 15.f5?
(i thought this was a good move when i played it, but it doesn't work. the most natural move now wins for black.)
15...d4 16.Ne4,Qxe5 17.Bg2,Nf6
the knight is dead and my position is lost. i resign.... . very sad for me.
maybe someone here can help me find some better ideas than the ones i came up with (or maybe correct my bad analysis ;)). thanks!
-steve

Message: Maybe the problem is that most people are too modest to expose themselves here as "strong players"? Maybe we should simply give out a rating at/above which we want a player to post a game.
Otherwise, what about you, peppe_l? You are above 2000, which I certainly consider quite advanced enough. So, if you have a suitable game handy, I think many of us lower-rated players here could certainly learn a lot from your insights and would appreciate you posting it.

Message: I certainly dont consider myself a strong player...
It is not only about rating...I believe I am somewhat overrated at the moment. The problem is if I annotate one of my games there is a danger of teaching people wrong things. For example I might say "this exchange is a blunder because..." even though in reality the exchange might be a good move. I cant say how strong player the mentor has to be, but personally I dont think I am good enough - at least if we want to use the game as learning material.
Anyway, I suppose you are right. No one wants to say "hey, Im a strong player you guys are looking for!" :-)
So lets wait for a day or two. If GK players really are too modest to volunteer, of course we can use a game from chess magazine or book, but how to find a game that is 1) good and instructive 2) well annotated 3) unfamiliar to readers?
If we take the risk that some of you might already know the game, of course we can test the concept in that way. I choose a well-annotated game (say, by IM or GM), add my comments to the moves that have no comments (for example if the original annotator does not comment on "trivial" opening moves even I could explain well enough) and hope at least some of you dont know the game already :-)
But will anyone participate?
