Subject: Morphy and Fischer

Message:
Has anyone noticed the similarities between the lives and careers of Morphy and Fischer? They both reached the top of the chess world, then abruptly decided that chess was useless and descended into paranoia. Both represented the New World vs the Old. Their games are also similar in that both are tactical and direct in their playing style. Morphy became insane at the end of his life. I suspect, sadly, that the same will happen to Fischer.

Sad to say, if "normal" is defined by conformance of behaviour "within" a spectum of social tolerance, then Fischer (and he was my boyhood hero) is way outside of that.

Chess: Carlsen's sublime plan — Magnus Carlsen took the lead at the London Chess Classic with understated but effective play: here's how he did it. The world chess no. 1 Magnus Carlsen took an early lead in the London Chess Classic by winning this game. He has sacrificed two pawns for the attack, but there is no obvious breakthrough. How did he make progress? RB: It took me a little while to realise just how solid White's position is. It's not apparent at first glance – those isolated pawns on a2 and c3, the hanging bishop on c4 and the slightly weakened king position. But take a closer look and you'll see that Black has no invasion points. White has everything protected and has a great position. Which is exactly the problem, because ...

Vishy Anand: I found Bobby Fischer surprisingly normal and calm — The world chess champion on analysing with the legendary American, being a new dad and his love of Monty Python. Q: How does it feel to be back for the London Chess Classic? It's excellent. I enjoy this tournament immensely. It's a great showcase for chess in Britain and it has the worthy aim of building chess in schools too. Q: So when enthusiastic kids ask how they can become chess masters, what do you tell them? Just keep playing often. Concepts fall into place only when you get them on the board. It's a bit like learning a language; it's nice to read a book, but only when you speak to someone does it all start to fall into place. Q: When you are preparing for major chess tournaments like London how many hours a day do you devote to getting ready? As much as it takes – up to 10 hours if needed – plus another two or three hours during the tournament. Q: And how do you prepare ...

8-Year-Old American Wins a World Championship — America has a new world champion, and he is only 8 years old. The new titleholder, Awonder Liang of Wisconsin, tied for first in the under-8 section of the World Youth Chess Championship in Brazil, which ended last weekend. He took the gold medal on tie-breakers. Awonder almost ran away from the field, winning his first seven games before drawing his eighth and then losing in the last round. He was not the only American to medal. In the under-10 section, Ruifeng Li of Texas took the silver, also on tie-breakers. And in the girls’ under-14 group, Sarah Chiang, another Texan, narrowly missed out on the bronze medal when she tied for third. But under the tie-breaker scoring system, she finished fourth. Fischer

Message:
I think, that Fischer is an insane Person! He really gave many examples of it! Many of us cant maybe accept this, because Fischer is a chess idol, a person from somewhere else, a god. so it is not easy to accept, that such a person can be mentally ill, that he can be something, what a god normally cannot be. But like all of us, Fischer is a human being, someone who has his bad and his good sides! one of the good is for sure his talent in chess and what he made of it! so when someone choose Fischer as an idol, it is absolutely justified!!
Fischer is a real chess genious and we can all learn a lot from his way of playing chess! he really did a lot for this game!

But talking about Fischer as a person that is something else! On this level he is a human being, like we are all! it doesnt mean, that he cant be a chess genious! he is, also for me............

On Chess: Online games clear so many barriers — At its best, technology enhances our interaction with the world and ourselves. It allows us to transcend physical limitations. For chess players, Internet play can be a godsend. Time, space, age and health restrictions are diminished. It’s fun to go online and play game after game against a series of opponents at varying times and with time limits of your choice. Whether it’s 3 a.m. or one is a shut-in on Tierra del Fuego, or both, it’s possible to summon a willing chess foe from cyberspace. And if you lose, your anonymity can shield you even from the opponent. Online play, therefore, provides a haven for experimentation that isn’t easily available at a chess club. The games, electronically recorded and available for review, offer ...

Hou Yifan puts Humpy Koneru in her pocket yet again — If chess is ritualised psychological domination, China's Hou Yifan has Humpy Koneru in her pocket. Hou, the world women's chess champion at the age of 17, has just retained her title by defeating her Indian challenger 5.5-2.5 without losing a game. Tirana, Albania was the improbable venue which provided a €200,000 (£172,000) prize fund. The pair are the highest ranked women apart from Hungary's legend Judit Polgar who is in a class of her own and never competes in all-female chess events. On paper it should have been a close match but Hou had already twice eliminated Koneru from the biennial knockout world chess championships. In Tirana the Indian lacked confidence and ...

we must differ. Even when he was playing chess,Fischer spoiled it by his paranoia, his prima donna behavior, and his hatred of Jews, which has always been a part of his make-up. Whatever Fischer accomplished on the chess-board has been totally negated by his warped and twisted sociopathy. Not even the most fanatic Fischer apologists can gloss over the fact that this fruitcake found pleasure that 3,000 people died, simply becuse it happened here in the US,theuntry that he turned his back on. Genius in a field does not excuse such monstrous, pathetic evil.

I just want to see the actual text of what he said. Did he actually say "I took pleasure in 3000 dying" ? We also have to remember that the USA prides itself for being a democracy. Freedom of speech allows people to express themselves. Shouldn't we allow them that freedom, even if we detest what they say ? I'm probably an old liberal, but I think it's dangerous to crucify people for expressing an opinion. No matter how distastful if may be to us. ...otherwise, if we get into witch hunts for heretic views, aren't we doing what we criticised the Soviets, Castro, Suddam, et al. for ?

Thanx gambitnut. For some reason, I was only able to access the first interview, but I get the drift...
Not a happy camper is he ? I certainly wouldn't like to invite him over for a cup of tea.
Why did the Government sell his "stuff", does anyone know ?
OK, he doesn't express himself very nicely. There is certainly a lot of hate/resentment in what he says.
I don't know about calling him a "monstrous, pathetic evil", though. After all he hasn't killed anyone. His rhetoric is certainly distasteful, if not downright racist. However, I suggest the following famous quote: "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it" (Beatrice Hall, 1906)
PS: Another consideration... Do we really know for sure that was him speaking ? It wouldn't be hard to fake, since not too many people have seen or heard him recently. After all, they faked the Hitler diaries, a few years ago. Faking a telephone interview with Fisher couldn't be too hard (not to mention the unreliability of stuff you find on the Internet)...

Bobby Fischer is not insane

Message:
He played Spassky in Yugoslavia in 1992. Big deal! Yugoslavia was attacked by the USA, not the other way around. They helped the Kosovars (moslems) against the Christian Serbs. Kosovars were helped by El Kaida and other "benevolent" moslems, such as the Saudis. Later the same moslems "rewarded" the USA for its help by falling the Twin Towers and all the other terrorist acts perpetrated since. Bobby has the right to play chess whereever he feels like it. He told the truth about many things and people don't like to hear it. Maybe his interviews were the subject of "photomontage", maybe not. He said he is an all around genius. About Kasparov he said:
"A piece of garbage like Kasparov might be called a chess genius, but he is like an idiot savant, outside of chess he knows nothing".
Bobby is not insane he is a man with the IQ of a genius. Kasparov on the other end tried to cheat so as not to lose to Judit Polgar (what a loser, reminds me of those time cheaters and draw offerers in some blitz sites).
Bobby Fischer tells the truth about the US and Israeli governments (I am Israeli, but the Truth is a Truth (Bobby's version is A Knight is a Knight, I believe). Either some of you don't understand he is right in many of his statements, or you don't like what he says and prefer to believe the official line of US and Israeli political figures.
In chess, Bobby was second only to the legendary Capablanca. Capablanca was a Cuban ambassador, but from Bobby's interviews we see he has much more guts. Capa would never have had the guts to say what Bobby said.

I agree, in part

Message:
I agree with Desertfox in part. Of course some of the things Fischer said in 1992 have some truth to it. Both the Israeli government and the US government (and you could add here 99% of the governments of the world) are known for their 'make-up' of reality.

About Kasparov "outside of chess he knows nothing" is obviously false. It may be just a wonderful memory, but Kasparov is known for his history knowledge, although he uses that knowledge to support strange theories. Kasparov is a very good player. One of the best, yet.

Ironic that Fischer said that, as in 1972 he said "I only know how to play chess, although I do that quite well."

He is free to have his points of view, Fischer, be them as crazy or radical as he wants.
