Message: If you want just one defence which can be used against any White opening, then you could try the Modern Defence as that is playable against any White plan.
Kind regards,
Cal

Message: giving the first few moves of the Modern Defence, as I don't have any references at hand right now? Say white is playing a normal 1 e4 2 Nf3 sort of opening.

Black aims to support the e5 square with the castled rook on e8, a Knight on d7, Bishop on g7 and the d6 pawn prior to making the pawn push to e5.
Kind regards,
Cal

Message: Arthur never would have got anywhere in life it wasn't for the help he got from the knights of Nid. Those famous mounted knights whose trademark attack involved galloping into battle without their horses. It was Arthur who used to do the sound effects for them with a couple of coconut shells.
A terrifying sight and sound...no wonder the Saxons used to run away !!

Chess news:
Fide world chess championship: is this Topalov's last chance? -- On Friday, in Sofia, Veselin Topalov will begin his challenge to Vishy Anand for the unified Fide/classical chess world championship title. The high point of Topalov's career to date was in 2005 when he won the Fide world chess championship tournament at San Luis ahead of Anand, Svidler, Leko and other super grandmasters. It may have been that the format suited Topalov – he has always been considered a stronger tournament than match player. The following year, at Elista, he lost his bid to unseat Anand's predecessor Vladimir Kramnik as classical chess world champion in a match marred by gamesmanship and (unproven) allegations of cheating. Topalov, now 35, will be aware that ...
Indian chess champ braves volcano chaos -- World chess champion Viswanathan Anand will square off against his Bulgarian challenger Veselin Topalov in Sofia Saturday in a marathon final starting a day late due to Europe's volcano crisis. Anand will take his seat for the first of 12 games after having had to travel by road from Frankfurt airport after being stranded there by the shutdown of Europe's airspace because of volcanic ash from Iceland. The 40-year old chess grandmaster finally made it to the Bulgarian capital by bus on Tuesday, four days later than planned. The international chess federation FIDE agreed to a one-day delay to the match, less than the three days Anand had sought but hopefully ...
Volcanic ash checks Vishy Anand's preparations for world chess championship -- Volcanic ash made the first move at the world championship match in Sofia, where Veselin Topalov has the white pieces in game one, starting at 1pm UK time today. All games are live on the internet. Topalov and the titleholder, Vishy Anand, play best-of-12 for a massive Bulgarian government prize fund of €1.2m for the winner, €800,000 for the loser. Anand was trapped by travel chaos at Frankfurt last Saturday and had to take a 40-hour car journey, extended due to visa problems, to the Sofia Hilton. After the tired Indian appealed for a three-day postponement, which the Bulgarian organisers brusquely rejected, the World Chess Federation (Fide) ruled a compromise ...
