If you want just one defence which can be used against any White opening, then you could try the Modern Defence as that is playable against any White plan.

Kind regards,

Cal

Well, since it's a new thread would you mind

Message:
giving the first few moves of the Modern Defence, as I don't have any references at hand right now? Say white is playing a normal 1 e4 2 Nf3 sort of opening.

Modern Defence

Message:
1.e4 g6 2.Nf3 Bg7 3.d4 d6 4.Nc3 Nf6

Black aims to support the e5 square with the castled rook on e8, a Knight on d7, Bishop on g7 and the d6 pawn prior to making the pawn push to e5.

Kind regards,

Cal

Bah !

Message:
Arthur never would have got anywhere in life it wasn't for the help he got from the knights of Nid. Those famous mounted knights whose trademark attack involved galloping into battle without their horses. It was Arthur who used to do the sound effects for them with a couple of coconut shells.

A terrifying sight and sound...no wonder the Saxons used to run away !!

Chess news:

Some chess grandmasters are older and wiser, but weaker -- Cyclist Lance Armstrong, golfer Tom Watson and chess grandmaster Anatoly Karpov each challenged much younger rivals last month. Only Karpov failed miserably -- a dreadful score of 1 1/2 -7 1/2 . Can chess, not a physically demanding sport, really be so difficult for its aging champions? Absolutely! The rating lists provide conclusive evidence that the ability to play chess at a very high level declines sharply after age 50. Even those rare grandmasters who remained successful in their mid-50s, such as Viktor Korchnoi and Sammy Reshevsky, were markedly weaker than in their prime years. For most chess grandmasters, the drop is between 100 and 200 rating points. Others ...

Wonderful Chess Circus -- Two Americans, Hikaru Nakamura and Vasik Rajlich, became world chess champions at the Chess Classic in Mainz, Germany, last week. They won their titles in Chess960, an adjusted version of Bobby Fischer's random chess, in which a computer reshuffles the pieces behind the pawns before the start of each game. (There are 960 positions possible, hence the name.) Nakamura won the Chess960 Rapid World Championship, smashing the Armenian grandmaster Levon Aronian 3½-½ in the final. Rajlich won the Livingston Chess960 World Championship, a computer competition, after his program, Rybka, defeated Shredder by a score of 3-1. The Russian chess grandmaster ...

Bennett and King on chess: the Scandanavian, part 2 -- Continuing our foray into the much-maligned Scandinavian. After 1 e4 d5 2 exd5 Qxd5 3 Nc3 where should the black queen move to? RB Life is busy and time is short, too short for me ever to have bothered to study the Scandinavian, so I have no idea what theory recommends. I can see two viable options. The first is the retreat to safety, 3...Qd8. The only reason I'd be tempted to play this is that I have a dim memory of seeing the black queen get cornered and captured in some Scandinavian game or other. But it seems such a waste of time. The more aggressive option is 3...Qa5, with the hope of putting further pressure on c3 with a later ...
