Message: those kinds of things happen sometimes. usually, with the same sort of set-up, you'll see a Bxf7+ followed by ...Kxf7 and then a knight check to win the minor piece back. white is up a pawn then (he gets his piece back with QxB@g4). this kind of thing works well if the mate isn't there. ——— French chess star wins world junior — Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France edged Sergei Zhigalko of Belarus to win the World Junior Chess Championship in Puerto Madryn, Argentina. Each scored an undefeated 10 1/2 -2 1/2 in the 82-player tournament, the most prestigious age-limited chess event. Only players born in 1989 or later were eligible. Vachier-Lagrave, 19, earned the chess grandmaster title in 2005 and won the French championship in 2007. He entered the tournament as the top seed with a rating of 2718 (23rd in the world), but his triumph was hardly guaranteed in an upset-filled melee that included 16 other grandmasters, including six rated above 2600. Zhigalko, 20, was seeded third ...

Message: priemiumsteve,
Nxe5 protects the bishop.
but from your analysis i know you are a good, well meaning player. ——— Flu virus keeps competitors in check at Tal Memorial — Ten of the world elite are competing at Moscow's Tal Memorial, which ends today and is one of the strongest tournaments in chess history. But the winner in the chess event's first half was a flu virus which affected several grandmasters and encouraged a minimalist, cautious approach. Ukraine's Vasily Ivanchuk wore a face mask, and a high 80 per cent of the first five round games were drawn. The sickest chess player was Magnus Carlsen, 19, who had trained beforehand with Garry Kasparov and was expected to unleash some opening bombs in his campaign to become world No 1. But Norway's golden teen was close to defeat against Vlad Kramnik in the opening round and then ...

Message: sorry about the typo premiumsteve ——— Kramnik Wins Tal Memorial, Carlsen Claims No. 1 Ranking — In a wild and exciting final round, Vladimir Kramnik of Russia, the former world chess champion, drew his last game to claim the 2009 Tal Memorial tournament title. Kramnik led from Round 6 on and finished with three wins, six draws and no losses. Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine, Kramnik’s last round opponent, missed several chances to win and settled for a tie for second with Magnus Carlsen of Norway, who beat Peter Leko of Hungary. With his victory, Carlsen overtook Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria to become the world’s top-ranked chess player. At 18, Carlsen is the youngest chess player to be No. 1. Viswanathan Anand of India, the world chess champion, was in second place before ...

Message: I don't believe premiumsteve was referring to this specific position, but rather to a tactical idea in general. The skeleton position is Nf3, Qd1, Bc4 for White and Bg4, Ke8, and the lack of a knight on f6 for Black. White plays Bxf7 Kxf7, Ng5+ (usually White has already played d3 or d4 so that the c1-bishop controls g5) Ke8, Qxg4 winning a pawn with an attack against Black's weakened king.
Legall's mate almost never happens (I think I managed to play the basic idea once when I first started playing) because ...Nf6 and ...Nc6 are such natural moves for Black that one or the other is usually played quite early on, whether Black understands fully why it should be played or not. In contrast, the Bxf7+, Ng5+, Qxg4 win a pawn idea occurs a bit more often, usually because Black decides he wants to fiddle with his development before getting around to playing ...Nf6. ——— Norwegian, 18, Is Youngest to Be Ranked No. 1 at Chess — The chess world has a new No. 1 player, Magnus Carlsen of Norway, and he is only 18 years old — the youngest chess player ever to hold the rank. On Saturday, Mr. Carlsen beat Peter Leko, a Hungarian player now ranked No. 11, in the final round of a chess tournament in Moscow. Though Mr. Carlsen only tied for second in the tournament, his performance was good enough for him to edge out Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria for the top world ranking. Mr. Topalov, 34, did not compete in the tournament. Mr. Carlsen, who turns 19 on Nov. 30, is only the seventh No. 1-ranked chess player since the ranking system began in 1970. Garry Kasparov, the Russian former world chess champion ...

Message: I ve been able to play this spectaular mate a few times after i learnt it in some blitz games. Although i dont use the opening from which it occurs, its a nice mate, and a good pattern, which could easily prop up in other positions. ——— Kramnik Retains Lead at Tal Memorial; Carlsen Notches First Win — With one round to go in the Tal Memorial chess tournament in Moscow, Vladimir Kramnik of Russia holds a half-point lead over Viswanathan Anand of India, the world chess champion, and Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine. Magnus Carlsen of Norway is alone in fourth after beating Ruslan Ponomariov in Round 8. Kramnik has held the lead since Round 6, despite being held to draws in the last two games. In Round 8, he launched a sacrificial attack against Peter Leko of Hungary, but Leko was never in any real danger and simply returned the extra material to achieve a balanced position, after which Kramnik forced a draw by perpetual check. Carlsen, the top seed in the chess tournament ...

Message: No, 5... dxe5 is the relatively best defense. 5... Qe7 is worse because not only does it not prevent 6. Qxg4 but it doesn't even win back the lost minor piece since any attempt to chop the e5-knight is met by Qc8+ and 6... Nd7 is met by 7. Nxf7.

Message: often one will play h3 to try to chase the bishop to h5, in which case white need not fear ...Nxe5. If the bishop simply captures the f3 knight then white has a slightly better position.

3/08/2003 16:29:22 Play online chess | Why 4.- a6?
Message: If I would have been playing black, I would either have played 4.- Nc6 or Nf6.
1.e4 e5
2.Nf3 d6
3.Bc4 Bg4
4.Nc3 Nf6-probably continuing with:
5.h3 Bxf3
6.Dxf3 Nc6
7.d3 Nd4
8.Dd1 Be7
Or
4. – Nc6
5. h3 Bxf3
6. Dxf3 Dd7
7. d3 Nd4
8. Dd1 Nf6
I don't understand black’s fourth move 4. - a6.
Could someone shed any light?
Best Wishes
