cool :)

Message:
those kinds of things happen sometimes. usually, with the same sort of set-up, you'll see a Bxf7+ followed by ...Kxf7 and then a knight check to win the minor piece back. white is up a pawn then (he gets his piece back with QxB@g4). this kind of thing works well if the mate isn't there.

Message:
I don't believe premiumsteve was referring to this specific position, but rather to a tactical idea in general. The skeleton position is Nf3, Qd1, Bc4 for White and Bg4, Ke8, and the lack of a knight on f6 for Black. White plays Bxf7 Kxf7, Ng5+ (usually White has already played d3 or d4 so that the c1-bishop controls g5) Ke8, Qxg4 winning a pawn with an attack against Black's weakened king.

Legall's mate almost never happens (I think I managed to play the basic idea once when I first started playing) because ...Nf6 and ...Nc6 are such natural moves for Black that one or the other is usually played quite early on, whether Black understands fully why it should be played or not. In contrast, the Bxf7+, Ng5+, Qxg4 win a pawn idea occurs a bit more often, usually because Black decides he wants to fiddle with his development before getting around to playing ...Nf6.

I ve been able to play this spectaular mate a few times after i learnt it in some blitz games. Although i dont use the opening from which it occurs, its a nice mate, and a good pattern, which could easily prop up in other positions.

Sort of

Message:
After 5... dxe5 there's no mate, but 6. Qxg4 leaves White with a very good position.

Message:
No, 5... dxe5 is the relatively best defense. 5... Qe7 is worse because not only does it not prevent 6. Qxg4 but it doesn't even win back the lost minor piece since any attempt to chop the e5-knight is met by Qc8+ and 6... Nd7 is met by 7. Nxf7.

If the knight is on c6

Message:
often one will play h3 to try to chase the bishop to h5, in which case white need not fear ...Nxe5. If the bishop simply captures the f3 knight then white has a slightly better position.
1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 d6 3 Bc4 Bg4 4 Nc3 a6 5 h3 Bh5 6 Nxe5

or 5...Bxf3 6 Qxf3

Yes

Message:
but if the bishop has retreated to h5 then white is OK to try Legals, he even wins a pawn and bishop for knight.

Why 4.- a6?

Message:
If I would have been playing black, I would either have played 4.- Nc6 or Nf6.

1.e4 e5
2.Nf3 d6
3.Bc4 Bg4
4.Nc3 Nf6-probably continuing with:
5.h3 Bxf3
6.Dxf3 Nc6
7.d3 Nd4
8.Dd1 Be7

Or

4. – Nc6
5. h3 Bxf3
6. Dxf3 Dd7
7. d3 Nd4
8. Dd1 Nf6

I don't understand black’s fourth move 4. - a6.
Could someone shed any light?

Best Wishes
Jean_Marc

Chess news:

Vishy Anand helps Magnus Carlsen to claim Corus crown -- When Vishy Anand drew his first nine games at Corus Wijk aan Zee last week, opinions were divided on whether the world chess champion had lost his edge or was simply taking a well-paid rest before his April title defence in Sofia against Veselin Topalov. Then Anand acted as Corus king-maker, beating Alexei Shirov and Vlad Kramnik, so that the pair finished half a point behind Magnus Carlsen. Norway's world No1 had previously won at Pearl Spring in China and the London Classic and finished second at the Tal Memorial, His fine run continued at Wijk, and the live ratings now make him the all-time No2 to Garry Kasparov. Carlsen had final-round luck in Holland, and the impression is that ...

World's No. 1 Chess Player Widens Lead Over His Biggest Rivals -- History will record 1990 as a great year for chess players: it was when three of the current top 25 players in the world were born. The youngest of the three is Magnus Carlsen of Norway, who is No. 1 in the world. Of the other two, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France is No. 18, and Sergey Karjakin, who was born in Ukraine but now plays for Russia, is No. 21. Under different circumstances, Karjakin and Vachier-Lagrave would be considered potential world chess champions. But just as the talented players in the 2003 N.B.A. draft have labored in LeBron James’s shadow, Karjakin and Vachier-Lagrave have been eclipsed by Carlsen. In Karjakin’s case, it is puzzling. He was the youngest ...

Chess notes -- All eyes this week were on the Corus chess tournament at Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands, which had about everything one could hope for: drama, contention, star players, and great chess. The event’s sponsor, Corus, is a steel manufacturing and construction company, which was recently acquired by Tate Steel, India’s second largest privately held company. This corporation is a sponsor of many athletic and cultural events throughout Europe and hopefully will continue this great chess event in future years. The “Corus Line’’ in this tourney included, among its 14 contestants, nearly all of the world’s leading Grandmasters, except for Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria and Levon Aronian of ...
