Message: No, 3.exf5 isn't wrong, it's a playable move, just as the other above-mentioned options. And yes, 3...e4 is the reply for black. Here's a nice sample game:
Nedela (2379) - Zvara (2356), 1999
1. e4 e5
2. Nf3 f5
3. exf5 e4
4. Qe2 Qe7
5. Nd4 c5
6. Nb5 d5
7. N1c3 Nf6
8. g4 h6
9. d3 a6
10. dxe4 dxe4
11. Bf4 axb5
12. Nxb5 Na6
13. Nd6+ Qxd6
14. Bxd6 Bxd6
15. Rd1 Be5
16. Qb5+ Ke7
white is much better, and he eventually won (1-0, 34 moves)

Message: You can also play 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 f5 3. exf5 e4 as a King's Gambit Accepted in reverse with something like 4. Ne5 Nf6 5. Be2, intending Bh5+ with a good game for White.

2/11/2003 06:44:01 play online chess | Nxe5 is the best
Message: after exf comes e4. Black can take center with d5 (Behtins (author of the gambit) prefered d6 with later d5) and c6. Black is not afraid of h5 check and moves his king to e7. Whites attack with Nc3-Nd5-Nf7 doesn't seem too impresive. They can, of course, take the rook, but the knight is also doomed. It is a sharp variation, that I wouldn't play by nither side.
Anyway, Nxe5 is considered to be the best for white.

2/15/2003 01:09:47 play online chess | Latvian Gambit
Message: There is a world championship in which players play the Latvian Gambit both with white and with black. The man behind the idea is John Elburg from Holland.
We played a correspondence game in which I was white and he played the Latvian as black. It ended in a draw. It is a risky gambit. You better play it only against those who are not strong players.
You could contact John Elburg for information about the Latvian. His e-mail address is:
Elburg@consunet.nl. Those of you who know French can go to your search engine and write Gambit Letton, you will get part 1 and part 2 of an interesting article with the Latvian Gambit.
From my personal experience, I always got a good game playing the Latvian with black, but later in the game, lost my draw+ position, and lost the game. I decided to abandon that gambit as unsound for black. I prefer to have the white pieces.

3/18/2003 08:46:33 play online chess | Nimzovich's line is the best !
Message: The best variant against the Latvian Gambit is following line 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 f5 3.Nxe5 Qf6 4.d4 d6 5.Nc4 Qf6 6.Ne3! all moves before was obligatory for black (white could chose) and now black has 2 chances 6...c67.Bc4! d5 8.Bb3 with following c4 and better game for white or 6...Nc6 7.c3! Other strong line for white is 6.Be2! with positional atvantage for white.

5. Be2 d5 !
6. Bh5+
Bh5+ is ok
( but after Ke7, Nf7 Qe8, Nxh8 Qxh5, Qxh5 Sxh5, g4 Sf6... it is a better position for black )
Something like
6. ... Ke7
7. d3 is a strong move against the black position
(following ... Bxf5 8. Bg5... )
I think the best way against the latvian gambit is d4 ! or even Lc4...

As common, I agree with werwolf about LG evaluation (long obligatory lines for black and so) but ...

"If White knows theory then they are able to make safe position with slightly positional advantage".
-werwolf
I agree, that is why I do not play it too often in internet chess where white does not need to know theory, he has all the time in the world to read and study whatever book he wants about the gambit, avoiding all the "bad" moves and choosing all the "right" moves.

Chess news:
Chess Notes -- David Howell is the teenage winner of the 2008 British chess championship held this month and last at Torquay, England. Here is a combinative puzzler played by Howell from the chess event. It’s against Richard Palliser in the ninth round. Howell opens with the Trompowsky attack, which succeeds in doubling Black’s kingside pawns but strengthens Black’s center. Nevertheless, it creates an odd position dissimilar to most queenside openings. According to Patrick Wolff, Black misses his opportunity for an advantage by failing to push a pawn on the seventh move. Nevertheless, the position appears to be fairly even. On the 10th move, White allows ...
200 Years of Charging Knights and Kings in Check in Zurich -- In 1809, Robert Fulton was granted a patent for the steamboat, Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin were born and Napoleon’s armies marched across Europe. That same year, several residents of Zurich founded a chess club called Schachgesellschaft Zürich. It was not the first — at the time, there were already chess clubs in London, Paris and other cities — but Schachgesellschaft has survived, and, 200 years later, it is said to be the oldest in the world. By comparison, the Marshall Chess Club in Manhattan is a spry 94 years old. This month, Schachgesellschaft commemorated its anniversary with a series of chess events including two open tournaments and ...
To Play or Not to Play -- During the last few months, Hikaru Nakamura, 21, has traveled back and forth from North America to Europe, adding Japan for good measure. The frequent traveling finally caught up with the young U.S. chess champion in Amsterdam, where he competed in the Rising Stars vs. Experience chess tournament, and he became ill and lost several games. Let's hope he has time to rest before his tough schedule starts at the end of the year. He may want to follow Magnus Carlsen's example. A year ago, Carlsen was reaching for the world's top spot. The 18-year-old Norwegian chess star is currently rated third behind Veselin Topalov and the world chess champion Vishy Anand. Since withdrawing ...
