And yes, 3...e4 is the reply for black. Here's a nice sample game: Nedela (2379) - Zvara (2356), 1999 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 f5 3. exf5 e4 4. Qe2 Qe7 5. Nd4 c5 6. Nb5 d5 7. N1c3 Nf6 8. g4 h6 9. d3 a6 10. dxe4 dxe4 11. Bf4 axb5 12. Nxb5 Na6 13. Nd6+ Qxd6 14. Bxd6 Bxd6 15. Rd1 Be5 16. Qb5+ Ke7 white is much better, and he eventually won (1-0, 34 moves) |

Black can take center with d5 (Behtins (author of the gambit) prefered d6 with later d5) and c6. Black is not afraid of h5 check and moves his king to e7. Whites attack with Nc3-Nd5-Nf7 doesn't seem too impresive. They can, of course, take the rook, but the knight is also doomed. It is a sharp variation, that I wouldn't play by nither side. Anyway, Nxe5 is considered to be the best for white. |

The man behind the idea is John Elburg from Holland. We played a correspondence game in which I was white and he played the Latvian as black. It ended in a draw. It is a risky gambit. You better play it only against those who are not strong players. You could contact John Elburg for information about the Latvian. His e-mail address is: Elburg@consunet.nl. Those of you who know French can go to your search engine and write Gambit Letton, you will get part 1 and part 2 of an interesting article with the Latvian Gambit. From my personal experience, I always got a good game playing the Latvian with black, but later in the game, lost my draw+ position, and lost the game. Other strong line for white is 6.Be2! with positional atvantage for white. |

Bh5+ Bh5+ is ok ( but after Ke7, Nf7 Qe8, Nxh8 Qxh5, Qxh5 Sxh5, g4 Sf6... it is a better position for black ) Something like 6. ... Ke7 7. d3 is a strong move against the black position (following ... Bxf5 8. Bg5... ) I think the best way against the latvian gambit is d4 ! or even Lc4... |

Black's most common replies are e4 or d6, although he has tried about everything. I recommend playing the Latvian but it is risky. I did not have a loss in about a dozen games until keiserpaul did me the honor. Still I like it alot. |

No any loose at all (all been won)... Anyway, I don't risk with it against strong players... ;-) . And if to touch memory records... I've once played LG against G.Kasparow :-) |

My best friend has played even longer. I would reccomend it to anyone who considers themselves a risk taker, attacker, tactician, or just plain aggressive. I have had the hardest times against 3.exf in OTB. I do not believe I have faced that yet here on GK. -Doris |

"If White knows theory then they are able to make safe position with slightly positional advantage". -werwolf I agree, that is why I do not play it too often in internet chess where white does not need to know theory, he has all the time in the world to read and study whatever book he wants about the gambit, avoiding all the "bad" moves and choosing all the "right" moves. ;-Doris |
