Through The Week in Chess website or chessopolis you can play fantasy chess for Corus Wijk aan Zee and other tournaments ( play.at/fantasychess
or www.chessville.com/fantasychess/). You pick what you think the results will be... most wins, most losses as black...

Out of 200 or more knowledgeable chess fans, who currently heads the list of competitors? Who has shown his/her talent for assessing chess matches, you might wonder?

That's right, it's Miss Sarah Tran in clear first! A full 1.5 points ahead at 9!

I don't know if I'll stay there, because I tend to start off strong but lose ground in later rounds as the players refuse to be manipulated by long range ESP. I'll enjoy it while I can...

Hi Sarah

Message:
Hope you have backed Bareev, Karpov and Radjabov to perform above their expected levels and marked down Kramnik and Topalov to underperform !!

Sarah, I haven't forgotten about our intended game, but I still can't get my home computer to work. Should be back up and running in a week or so, so I will take on the "Sisters Tran" then (or should that be cousins ?).

Kind regards,

Cal

Gobsmacked !!!

Message:
Loek van Wely in first place !! Has the chess world gone mad ? Are you holding the results sheet upside down !!

van Wely only plays in the Corus in order that the Super GM's can pick up some easy wins to boost their confidence. He gets nailed comprehensively every year. Perhaps, like me, the Super GM's are guilty of a lack of respect for van Wely. It will certainly be a major surprise if he holds onto first place.

Sarah, be honest now, did you put Loek van Wely down as the probable winner of the Tournament ? !!

The games have been brilliant to watch so far, particularly good was watching young Teimour really grind poor old Karpov through the mill, having to play fifty saving moves when a piece down in the endgame. It must have been pure torture for poor old Anatoly, but, give him his due, he played perfect and correct defence and held on for a draw.

Kind regards,

Cal

the King

Message:
A bit more respect for the king (van wely) please!
He himself has put Anand as probably winner, because anand makes the play himself, and he just graps the points his oppenents leave him going too far in their attempts to win. Well, we will see.
I was yesterday visiting this great tournement, and it was very nice to see Shirov explain his win against Bareev. If you have time, play through this game!

Message:
Good old Anatoly has just stuck the "boot in" on van Wely. 1-0 to Karpov !

He may be a national hero but you have to admit that for the past few years he has been an also ran in this Tournament. Anyways, I wish him well for the rest of the Tournament, it would be great for Dutch Chess if he could win it, it would be a real boost for your Chess Federation and might spark a resurgence of interest in the game.

Kind regards,

Cal

Cal,

Well, I suffered a number of setbacks, to put it mildly. I was #1 and then near the top for a few rounds, but quickly plummeted. Another example of life's cruelty. Oh, the inhumanity!

My problem is that I always (in these match picks) underestimate Anand (what is Sarah thinking?), firstly, and secondly overestimated Ponomariov and Kramnik. Kramnik was my biggest dilemma. On one hand, he'd been out of serious competition for a while and I was unimpressed by his showing in the computer match... but I still had faith in him as the handsomest contestant (!). I'm sure you've fallen into the same trap in picking winners! Additionally, I was very keen on Karpov to do well, what with the recent Kasparov match and some other good showings. I could blame van Wely, whom I had at the bottom of all my picks, but how many people didn't do the same?

Sarah Tran

p.s. it seems that our match at chessworld is in jeopardy (I didn't even know about Hien's challenge until she told me afterwards), since the site seems to have shut down for a while.

Hopefully the server problem will just be a temporary thing.

Before Corus started I drew up my own list of predicted finishing positions and they are also looking a bit sick.......

1. Kramnik
2. Bareev
3. Ponomariov
4. Ivanchuk
5. Anand
6. Topalov
7. Karpov
8. Radjabov
9. Shirov
10. Grischuk
11. Polgar
12. Krasenkow
13. Timman
14. Van Wely

Eek ! I got van Wely completely wrong, also. like you, marked down Anand (and I won't even mention Ponomariov !!). Also, I was not very gallant in marking down Judit in 11th place.....

Still, it isn't over yet so my predictions may still come closer to fruition (apart from van Wely)

Good luck in your contest, hope you regain #1. As soon as Chessworld returns I will activate our game.

Kind regards to all your family,

Cal

Chess news:

Gelfand Wins World Chess Cup -- Boris Gelfand of Israel is the 2009 World Cup champion. Gelfand won the title by beating Ruslan Ponomariov of Ukraine in a playoff on Monday. The first four games of the playoff were rapid games (25 minutes per player per game) and Gelfand took the lead by winning the second game. But Ponomariov, with his back to the wall, won the last rapid game to tie the match up again. The playoff then went to blitz chess (5 minutes per player per game) and Gelfand once again took the lead by beating Ponomariov in the first game when he managed to trap Ponomariov’s queen in 21 moves. Ponomariov rallied again, winning the second game. But Gelfand won the third and Ponomariov ...

London Chess Classic: Kramnik's lesson in positional play -- McShane-Kramnik, London 2009. Black to play. With two rounds to go in the London Chess Classic, the Norwegian chess prodigy Magnus Carlsen looks set to win the tournament. Vladimir Kramnik, his main rival, is in second place. In this game from round three, Kramnik displayed his refined positional understanding. RB I've been following this tournament online, but I missed this particular game, and more's the pity because I can't find a good continuation for Black. Clearly Kramnik has the better game – the two centralised knights look very threatening – but how to convert Black's positional superiority into a winning position? 1...Nxd2 2 Nxd2 doesn't lead anywhere and ...

Children 1, Astronaut 0 -- In the end, the astronaut could not outwit the children. Wednesday, Greg Chamitoff, an American astronaut, resigned a long-running correspondence chess game against a group of children from Stevenson Elementary School in Bellevue, Wash. They had started the game in September 2008 while Chamitoff was stationed aboard the International Space Station. The game had been the idea of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Officials at the agency had asked the United States Chess Federation about having Chamitoff play a game of chess against some of the federation’s members. Stevenson was chosen as an opponent because the school ...
