The link to the livegames is onfortunately very slow:-(( Txs Soren that you named it!! ——— Aronian Wins the Last Amber Chess Tourney — Levon Aronian won the Amber chess tournament in Monaco this month. He will be known as the last winner. After twenty years, the combined blindfold and rapid chess event, featuring the world's top players, comes to a halt. Named after his daughter Melody Amber, the Dutch sponsor Joop van Oosterom, created a dream tournament for the world's best grandmasters, allowing them to have fun and be well paid for it. This year's prize fund was 227,000 euro (aprox. US $317,000). Last year's co-winner, Vassily Ivanchuk, went as far as calling it " the greatest tournament." It was a perfect chess event to watch: a nice mixture of different creative efforts from brilliant and funny ...

The link to the livegames is onfortunately very slow:-(( Txs Soren that you named it!! ——— Magnus Carlsen continues chequered form with Vasily Ivanchuk defeat — This week's Amber blindfold and rapid invitational in Monaco had a massive €227,000 (£199,000) prize fund and was the last in a 20-year-series financed by the Dutch computer billionaire Joop van Oosterom. The top eight in the world chess rankings all took part, and despite its artificial conditions, Monaco is a real test of strength for the chess elite. Magnus Carlsen had declared in a pre-tournament interview that he would restore the dominance he has spoilt with uneven results over the past year. The Norwegian, 20, took an early lead until in round five, in a bizarre repeat of Amber 2010, he was crushed by Vasily Ivanchuk in both games. In the rapid game he actually got checkmated, but the damage was ...

Message: ——— Chess world rocked by French cheating scandal — Three top French chess players have been found guilty of cheating in last year's world championship, using an ingenious messaging system. The French chess federation has suspended Sébastien Feller, a 20-year-old grandmaster, his team-mate Cyril Marzolo, 32, and Arnaud Hauchard, 39, the French team captain. It said they used mobile text messages, a remote chess computer and coded signals to beat the opposition. The fraud, which took place during last September's Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, has rocked the chess world, which prides itself on its code of honour. Rival teams have been known to accuse each other of cheating, but in this case the whistle-blower was ...

Message: Hope you have backed Bareev, Karpov and Radjabov to perform above their expected levels and marked down Kramnik and Topalov to underperform !!
Sarah, I haven't forgotten about our intended game, but I still can't get my home computer to work. Should be back up and running in a week or so, so I will take on the "Sisters Tran" then (or should that be cousins ?).
Kind regards,
Cal
——— On Chess: Fischer's dexterity with game pieces was sight to see — While watching Bobby Fischer explain a chess position during a TV appearance a year or two before he became world chess champion, I witnessed a startling display. The chess pieces appeared as inseparable from his long and graceful fingers as a deck of cards from the hands of a riverboat gambler or a soccer ball from the feet of Pele. Perhaps no player has ever set up chess pieces and moved them in play and analysis as frequently as the chess-obsessed American prodigy did. In the recent Fischer biography Endgame, Frank Brady describes a 1960 demonstration of chess analysis by Fischer at a New York tavern using a worn wallet chess set: "The half-inch plastic pieces seemed to jump into place ...

Message: Loek van Wely in first place !! Has the chess world gone mad ? Are you holding the results sheet upside down !!
van Wely only plays in the Corus in order that the Super GM's can pick up some easy wins to boost their confidence. He gets nailed comprehensively every year. Perhaps, like me, the Super GM's are guilty of a lack of respect for van Wely. It will certainly be a major surprise if he holds onto first place.
Sarah, be honest now, did you put Loek van Wely down as the probable winner of the Tournament ? !!
The games have been brilliant to watch so far, particularly good was watching young Teimour really grind poor old Karpov through the mill, having to play fifty saving moves when a piece down in the endgame. It must have been pure torture for poor old Anatoly, but, give him his due, he played perfect and correct defence and held on for a draw.
Kind regards,
Cal

Message: A bit more respect for the king (van wely) please!
He himself has put Anand as probably winner, because anand makes the play himself, and he just graps the points his oppenents leave him going too far in their attempts to win. Well, we will see.
I was yesterday visiting this great tournement, and it was very nice to see Shirov explain his win against Bareev. If you have time, play through this game!

He may be a national hero but you have to admit that for the past few years he has been an also ran in this Tournament. Anyways, I wish him well for the rest of the Tournament, it would be great for Dutch Chess if he could win it, it would be a real boost for your Chess Federation and might spark a resurgence of interest in the game.
Kind regards,

Message: Cal,
Well, I suffered a number of setbacks, to put it mildly. I was #1 and then near the top for a few rounds, but quickly plummeted. Another example of life's cruelty. Oh, the inhumanity!
My problem is that I always (in these match picks) underestimate Anand (what is Sarah thinking?), firstly, and secondly overestimated Ponomariov and Kramnik. Kramnik was my biggest dilemma. On one hand, he'd been out of serious competition for a while and I was unimpressed by his showing in the computer match... but I still had faith in him as the handsomest contestant (!). I'm sure you've fallen into the same trap in picking winners! Additionally, I was very keen on Karpov to do well, what with the recent Kasparov match and some other good showings. I could blame van Wely, whom I had at the bottom of all my picks, but how many people didn't do the same?
Sarah Tran
p.s. it seems that our match at chessworld is in jeopardy (I didn't even know about Hien's challenge until she told me afterwards), since the site seems to have shut down for a while.

Message: Hopefully the server problem will just be a temporary thing.
Before Corus started I drew up my own list of predicted finishing positions and they are also looking a bit sick.......
1. Kramnik
2. Bareev
3. Ponomariov
4. Ivanchuk
5. Anand
6. Topalov
7. Karpov
8. Radjabov
9. Shirov
10. Grischuk
11. Polgar
12. Krasenkow
13. Timman
14. Van Wely
Eek ! I got van Wely completely wrong, also. like you, marked down Anand (and I won't even mention Ponomariov !!). Also, I was not very gallant in marking down Judit in 11th place.....
Still, it isn't over yet so my predictions may still come closer to fruition (apart from van Wely)
Good luck in your contest, hope you regain #1. As soon as Chessworld returns I will activate our game.
Kind regards to all your family,
Cal
