Message: right now in OK there are 6 good kid chess players, we are all at least a 1700+ in skill and we have cause so much damage in tourneys ( takeing over 1,000 between us) and placeing pretty high above a lot of adults, most adults( even experts and masters!!) hate and are scared to play us( my friend jake came really close to beating a master- he won a R off the guy but fell for a mate trap 20 moves later). Well 2 imortant brothers-1 an expert- 1 a 1750 player- have suggested that there be ADULT tourneys - you have to be 21 years old to join, I thought this was really funny, any thoughts on kids being allowed into adult tourneys?

Message: The problem with playing kids is that when an adult loses, it makes him look worse than if he had lost to an adult... But I personally like playing kids... They are our future and encouragement can never be bad... I agree with Lazar "if they pay the entry fee, they should be able to play"... But there will always those (adults) who just cant stand the thought of looking bad and will try to eliminate that from happening... They miss a point Bobby Fischer once said "play the board, not the player"...
But one must ask themselves this question... What would happen to the Lakers if they lost to some High School Basketball team?... They will lose face... But it will never happen because they will never play a High School team due to the fact, they have nothing to gain from the win, and everything to lose from defeat...
Bro... ——— Chess World of Karpov and Kasparov — Standing next to each other, side by side, Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov made a last minute effort to sway the FIDE elections their way. One day before the vote, during the press conference in the Siberian town of Khanty-Mansyisk, they were trying to explain how they will change the chess world. Karpov was running for the FIDE presidency and Kasparov supported him. They still had a small chance to win. In the last six month they criscrossed the world, talking about the wonderful game of chess and what could be done to make it more popular. The next day, Sept. 29, the FIDE delegates re-elected Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, who promptly announced that he defeated two world chess champions. What ...

Message: Fischer said "I don't believe in psychology, I believe in good moves" but this was deceptive--Fischer's games and annotations, IMO, show that he was as aware of psychology as any of the best.
If adults don't like playing kids, then they should just improve to the point where they don't have to play them anymore (super-GM level). A lot of people also don't like playing women, but go figure. I personally enjoy playing both kids and women, especially because I can usually generalize about kids' playing styles since they've had limited experience.
And I doubt anyone really wants to see a Lakers-high school game :) ——— Plenty of Fighting Spirit on Final Day of Pearl Spring — Magnus Carlsen of Norway had already clinched first place at the Pearl Spring chess tournament in Nanjing, China, but there was still a lot to play for, so all the games on the final day were hard-fought and two of them were decisive. The most important game of the day, in terms of the standings and the prize money, was between Viswanathan Anand of India, the world chess champion, and Etienne Bacrot of France. They were tied for second place. Anand had White and opened with his d pawn. Bacrot used the Nimo-Indian Defense and achieved a solid position out of the opening, though Anand had the bishop pair — a potentially long-term advantage. Bacrot began to play loosely, opening up his ...

Message: It as strictly an example about the Lakers and the way it would effect them if they actually played... They would have nothing to win in such a game and everything to lose... So why play... Or did the example go right over your head?... ——— Chess: Magnus Carlsen snaps slump in China — Magnus Carlsen defeated three elite chess grandmasters to take the lead in the Pearl Spring double round robin in Nanjing, China. The Norwegian chess star scored 5-2 in the first seven rounds of the 10-game tournament. Carlsen had fallen to second in the world chess rankings because of poor performances in two recent events, but he has regained an estimated eight of the 24 rating points he lost. World chess champion Viswanathan Anand of India and French grandmaster Etienne Bacrot were Carlsen's closest rivals, with scores of 4-3. Bacrot upset Anand in the first cycle but lost the rematch. Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria, who has not completely recovered from losing the 2010 world championship match against ...

Message: I understand the analogy but it doesn't quite fit. The mis-match is too great. If a kid has an OTB rating of 1850 and is playing an adult with an OTB rating of 1847 it's an even match. I've played a couple kids here at GK and had a great time. I see a couple of 'them' have quite a bit higher ratings than I have. I assume they earned it with their skill. Cool. One thing I keep in mind if I'm playing a kid and he's winning is....I can still beat you up you little twerp! ;-) ——— Nakamura Poised to Defend Title at Cap d’Agde — Hikaru Nakamura of the United States has worked his way into the world’s chess elite (he is ranked No. 15), but as good as he is at slow chess, his real forte is at faster time controls. He is generally considered to be among the top three or four in the world at blitz chess (where each player has five minutes or less for the entire game) and he also seems to be among the world’s best at rapid chess, in which each player has about 25 minutes per game. Two years ago, he won the Cap d’Agde Rapid chess tournament in France in a field that included Magnus Carlsen of Norway (now No. 1 in the world), Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine (who Nakamura beat in the finals) and Anatoly Karpov of Russia, the former ...

Message: acually we are all b players, an we are kiling these 1800s to 2150s, players of our rating rarley are able to beat us ——— Chess Champion's Class Act — Vishy Anand is the most versatile world chess champion. After all, he won world championships in classical matches, knockouts, rapids and blitz and dominated the advanced chess in which players are able to consult the computers. In this respect, no other world chess champion comes even close. But the Indian superstar is also a class act and gives credit where credit is due. Twice this year, Anand turned a favorite defense of his former coach, Artur Yusupov, into gold. "It was a pleasure to have Artur Yusupov working as my second, both personally and professionally," Anand writes in the preface to Yusupov's excellent book Boost your Chess 2, Beyond the Basics, published by Quality Chess. Yusupov was ...

Message: If you paid the tournament fee and are a USCF member then you should be allowed to play. We have a kid who's about 15 years old who regularly plays in our Wednesday evening tournaments. He'w not as good as the guys you talk about but who cares?
Then again, the average OTB rating at our club is about 1800 so we have a VERY strong club. Maybe it makes a difference being exposed to so many very strong players.

1/13/2003 16:04:43 Play online chess | Once started a chessclub
Message: I once started a chessclub in my home town. we had a great turnout -very unexpected - and a Church donated space for us to play.
The strongest two players turned out to be -
1: An older postal player who had not played otb chess but had reached the Golden Knights finals (that is a US event - reaching the finals is pretty good).
2: An extremely talented young player who went to a school in a neighboring town.
These two were about equal in strength and far ahead of everybody else.
When the two of them played, if they could reach an endgame, the older player almost always won. It was funny watching the young player trying to draw an endgame a clear pawn ahead.
But, as often as not, the older player got killed in the middlegame.
So they were about equal.
The funny thing was - I noticed - that as time went by -
The postal player got quite a lot stronger in defending tactical middlegames.
The younger player learned a lot about how to play endgames.
So I think there is no problem with younger and older players battling against each other. I think it makes all of us stronger.
So think again before excluding an age group.

Message: If young players know the rules and can act well enough to play OTB, by all means let them! Chess is a great hobby for youngsters and playing vs more experienced players teaches them both chess and good manners. If someone doesnt like to play vs youngsters (or women, foreigners, weaker opponents etc) that hardly justifies excluding anyone from tournaments.
