Message: I know this isn't new news to most people here at gameknot, especially the players who know a lot about Fischer such as edmaster, but I have for the first time read Bobby fischers account of how he was beaten by police men and treated like dirt by them while in custardy for something he did not do!
I think I remember people at gameknot saying he made it all up or something like that, but I can't remember for sure. Is it supposed to be true? If it is then I think the offending police officers should be hung!

Message: That seems a little overdone--- And what good does it do fischer? a better idea I think would be for them to have to pay damages and beg his pardon!

Message: he was beaten because one policeman said that he appeared with one bank theft (hehehehe).
But he deserved that. He robbed many games of his oponents(hehehee).

Message: I read letters that Fischer hhimself wrote
describing the account, and I must say they
were very believable. I find it hard to believe
that he could have made them up.
You might be able to do an internet search to
try to find these letters. They are posted at
some fischer tribute page that also has all of
his games.
Here are some of the details I remember:
Fischer was apprehended on the street as he
was walking. The police probably didn't like
how he looked. They detained him and asked
him questions like "What is your name?" "What
is your profession?" When Fischer told them
he was the world chess champion (even though
I think this was after he forfeitted the title),
that's when the cops started giving him a hard
time. They brought him to jail for no reason
(except maybe they thought he was homeless because
Fischer couldn't remember his own address, but
he could point to the building where he lived
down the street) and they treated him very badly,
like forcing him to lie in his jail cell naked
with no blankets. He was cold and he unzipped
his mattress to get inside. Later, they kept
him in jail longer (or maybe fined him) for
destroying the mattress, even though he did not
destroy it. They played mental games with him.
What struck me as the most heart-wrenching part
of the story was that Fischer always told the
truth, about who he was, what he was doing, about
the mattress, everything..., but the cops kept
telling lies. Fischer seemed quite inflamed on
that point, calling the cops liars. He gave
the cops' names in the letter, and the location
of the building where he was kept. And dates
too. All very real sounding. He may have
mentioned the cops hitting him (or maybe even
beating him), but honestly I can't recall if he
claimed this or not in his letter. But the
humiliation and his utter loss of freedom and
rights for 2-5 days was much worse than a physical
beating anyway.

Chess news:
The checkmate club -- The University of Maryland, Baltimore County may not be the football and basketball powerhouse that its much larger sibling at College Park is, but when it comes to fielding world-class chess contenders, watch out. Its players' victory in the Final Four over three Texas teams at the national college chess championships in Brownsville over the weekend — the sixth chess championship the school has brought home during the last 10 years — is about as good as it gets. The team itself embodies in microcosm the ethic of excellence that UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski III has tirelessly promoted for the entire school and its programs during the last ...
Robot chess opponent -- Hopefully Dennis who is playing with a a robotic arm as his chess opponent has not input the necessary code to have the arm reach over and choke the life out of him should he win the chess match. The Lynxmotion AL5A robotic arm is, after all, full well capable of plucking each chess piece and moving it to the next space. This is made possible thanks to a Python script Dennis himself created to process the moves and decide on the next move. A webcam is used to capture the location of the desired pieces on the chess board in order to help it in its task. ...
Final two rounds produce an exciting climax to the German chess league -- Russia's national chess league may be the strongest in the world but Germany's Bundesliga runs it close and its media profile is far higher. The final two rounds last weekend began with Baden-Baden and Solingen on 24 points from 13 matches, Werder Bremen 23 and Mulheim 20. Baden-Baden is the cash-rich team and even boasts the world chess champion, Vishy Anand, and world No1, Magnus Carlsen in its squad, though the Indian has played only two games and the Norwegian none. But the active regulars are so strong that Michael Adams, the England No1, plays only on a mid-board in the eight-man team. Werder Bremen, which has links with the football club, fields ...
