Message: I've just started playing 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.d4?!
I'm just wondering where I could find out more and what are some of the most common refutations.

Message: The move hardly deserves ?!, and it's not really a gambit since white gets the pawn back fairly easily. Estrin's book is out of print, so you might have a hard time finding a copy, but, to my knowledge, the main line Max Lange Attack runs 4... exd4 5. 0-0 Bc5 6. e5 d5 7. exf6 dxc4 8. Re1+ Be6 9. There are several books on the Max Lange and the other variants if you want to learn more. ——— On Chess: Fischer's reputation as egomaniac unfair — In his account of the 1992 rematch between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky, Yasser Seirawan offered his opinion - after spending hours with Fischer - that 60 percent of what he had read about him was wrong. Indeed, despite his often grievous negatives, there was another Fischer whom many of us experienced and admired. He could be kind and appreciative of others in many contexts. In a 1969 column that he wrote for Boys' Life magazine, Fischer praised U.S. junior chess champion Ken Rogoff and added: "It should encourage each of you who read this column to know that by applying yourself, as Ken did, you can become a fine chess player in a relatively short time." When the father of ...

Message: in my opinion, 5...Nxe4; anyway Black gets an equal game, but no more, while in the 4.Ng5 variation he has interesting chances for a pawn. So, if you want to mark 4.d4 you should mark it "!" :)
Alex ——— Aronian Wins the Last Amber Chess Tourney — Levon Aronian won the Amber chess tournament in Monaco this month. He will be known as the last winner. After twenty years, the combined blindfold and rapid chess event, featuring the world's top players, comes to a halt. Named after his daughter Melody Amber, the Dutch sponsor Joop van Oosterom, created a dream tournament for the world's best grandmasters, allowing them to have fun and be well paid for it. This year's prize fund was 227,000 euro (aprox. US $317,000). Last year's co-winner, Vassily Ivanchuk, went as far as calling it " the greatest tournament." It was a perfect chess event to watch: a nice mixture of different creative efforts from brilliant and funny ...

Message: of you play it as the Scotch Gambit (1.e4 e5; 2.Nf3 Nf6; 3.d4 exd4; 4.Bc4!?). ——— Magnus Carlsen continues chequered form with Vasily Ivanchuk defeat — This week's Amber blindfold and rapid invitational in Monaco had a massive €227,000 (£199,000) prize fund and was the last in a 20-year-series financed by the Dutch computer billionaire Joop van Oosterom. The top eight in the world chess rankings all took part, and despite its artificial conditions, Monaco is a real test of strength for the chess elite. Magnus Carlsen had declared in a pre-tournament interview that he would restore the dominance he has spoilt with uneven results over the past year. The Norwegian, 20, took an early lead until in round five, in a bizarre repeat of Amber 2010, he was crushed by Vasily Ivanchuk in both games. In the rapid game he actually got checkmated, but the damage was ...
