Subject: Ending Games

Message:
I would just like to know is there anyone else that refuses to resign. And would you rather play against someone who would resign or fight to the death?

Usually at the professional level is proper etiquette to resign than to play on a position which is utterly without prospect of salvation... As Bronstein writes in the "Sorcerer's Apprentice", you should not continue playing in a position in which, but your own personal evaluation of the situation, there are no hopes of saving the game...

Now at an amatuer level, the more practice at endgames the better... Beginners require "proof of technique" no certificates accepted... So resigning is all a matter of which level of play your opponent is at... Begginers will play to the bitter end... Advanced players will respect your play level (that is if you have shown it throughout the game) and resign when they know they have a losing position...

Viva Las Vegas — I spent the last week in Las Vegas for the annual National Open Chess Championship, held at the South Point Hotel and Casino. As usual, the chess tournament was well attended, with more than 600 players in the big event. Actually, I shouldn't call the event a tournament. It was really a full-on chess festival! Most chess tournaments are, well, chess tournaments. The National Open is a chess festival in the truest sense of the word. There is a chess camp, blitz tournament (five-minute games), quick tournament (10-minute games) and the aforementioned regular tournament (which lasts three days), as well as a big scholastic event, which draws more than 150 scholastic players. In addition, two or ...

To answer your question Eipee... I would much rather play against the advanced players... In chess clubs I usually ask critical questions like "Do you know how to promote your pawn?" in a King vs King, pawn endgame... If the opponent says "Put my King in front of my pawn" I will resign... But if he doesn't, then that is an opportunity to teach the opponent the proper way of playing chess... But that is only when I am playing in a club atmosphire with novices in the group... At a tournament level there is no question... Resign when you have a losing position... Otherwise you become a marked player (a fish for terms)...

Chess: Pawn power — How an apparently innocuous pawn move can invite trouble. DK: Last week Ronan introduced our new theme: pawn storms. This position doesn't obviously fit with that, but read on… RB: I don't know this line of the Closed Sicilian but doesn't 1…Bb7 seem the logical continuation? I would expect White to follow up with 2 Re1 when Black should probably turn his attention to getting his king to safety, starting with 2…g6 (or 2…e6), and all looks pretty secure. But I know that Dan likes to try to open up a king that hangs around in the middle, so after 1…Bb7 is there any way for White to take immediate advantage of Black's under-developed kingside? What about a quick advance of ...
