Subject: Russia - Rest of the world 48-52

Message:
The match between Russia and the rest of the worlds ended today. Russia lost rather highly 48-52.
Is this the first sign that Russia loses the leading position in international chess? Or did they just have a bad day?
What do you think?

Message:
OK, that's probertly true (I think there played Anand, Adams, Leko and j. Polgar, Topalov who aren't from former USSR - countries), but the USSR isn't existing anymore, so the question stays: Is Russia is leading in chess?

The Catalan Chess Opening, part 2: the g2 bishop — How can White best exploit the potential of his fianchettoed kingside bishop? RB I'm a Catalan virgin, but I'm beginning to see some themes, in particular the power of the bishop on g2. Unfortunately the bishop's dominance of the h1-a8 diagonal is contested by the black bishop on b7. If I could somehow block its scope, my own bishop's potential would be enhanced. That's why I'm fixating on the c6 square. Ideally, I'd like to land a knight on c6, and maintain it there or force Black to swap off his bishop. The trouble is that ...

About your question: I think yes, Russia is still leading in chess compare to any other country. But compare to all of them together it is not so obviously.

New Way to Crown Winners in Chess Games That End in Ties — Tournaments that end in ties are a problem in chess, and how to break them — or whether to even try — is a thorny topic. Some chess tournaments use complicated scoring systems to determine a winner. But what fan understands that a new chess champion is the player with the higher Sonneborn-Berger score? People want the winner to be decided in a competition, not by a calculator. Tie-breaker games have their own problems. If they keep ending in draws, it may be days or even weeks before one player wins. And White always has an advantage, so each player needs a turn at that color. So-called Armageddon games emerged a few years ago. These are one-game playoffs ...

Ukrainian Ex-Pat, in His Homeland, Wins World Rapid Chess Cup — Displaying amazing resiliency, and not a little good fortune, Sergey Karjakin captured the Fourth World Rapid Chess Cup over the weekend. The chess tournament was held in Odessa, Ukraine, organized by the Association of Chess Professionals and sponsored by Pivdennyi Bank. Karjakin is originally from Ukraine, but last year he changed federations, moving to Russia. At the time, he said that “he didn’t have enough support inside the country, in Ukraine,” adding, “I also need to train with good coaches and there are a few good coaches in Russia.” The very best chess players — Viswanathan Anand of India, the world chess champion; Magnus Carlsen of Norway; Veselin Topalov ...

russia is still leading

Message:
Nobody can dispute that Kasparov and Kramnik are #1 & #2 in the world. But look what they ve done : minus 2 and minus 1 in this turnament. Now imagine they would play at their real power and made plus 1 at least . What could be? Russia could win 51-49.
So Russia is still a leader.

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov to battle Karpov and Kasparov for Fide presidency — Fide, the International Chess Federation, holds its five-yearly presidential election in September and it is turning nasty. The incumbent since 1995 is Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, controversial ruler of Russia's semi-autonomous Caucasian state Kalmykia. In his early years as Fide president Ilyumzhinov built a 'chess city', made the game mandatory in Kalmyk schools, and financed grandmaster chess so generously that his dubious human rights record and eccentric claim to have met "humanoid aliens" were shrugged off. But recently Fide's excessive reliance on ex-Soviet tournament venues and an autocratic rule change where a chess player loses if not seated at the board at the start have ...

So then tell me...

Message:
why did they play so bad? Was this tourney just fun for them or what? Look for example at the Polgar - Kasparov game! He really played weak. Why? Is he getting too old for chess? Fact is, the world has won and that although Karpov (who is a really instabile player) had a pretty good performance.

Gata Kamsky wins U.S. Chess Championship — Gata Kamsky of New York won the U.S. Chess Championship on Tuesday in St. Louis. In an odd finish to the 24-player event, Kamsky drew to break a tie with Yury Shulman of Chicago. The chess tournament began with seven conventional rounds. Then top scorers Kamsky, Shulman, Alexander Onischuk (Baltimore) and 2009 chess champion Hikaru Nakamura (St. Louis) qualified for a round robin to determine the top four places. Kamsky and Shulman scored 2-1, while Nakamura and Onischuk tied for third at 1-2. In the game that decided the title of chess champion and the $30,000 first prize, Kamsky chose to play Black with draw odds and 25 minutes against Shulman's 60 minutes. Shulman gained ...

Russia - Rest of the world

Message:
I would like to say three things:

1. This was the FIRST match Russia - Rest of the World. If we still have USSR Ponamariov and Ivantchuk (at least) will be playing on the other side. But fortunally the world today is different.

2. I'm not sure but has this match money envolved?
Because that can be the reason for so poor performances of some players.

3. In 'normal' conditions I think that Russia Team is still stronguer than the rest of the world team.

I think breakdown is like this:
Assuming that strentght all countries all together should be 100 points, Russia would score 25, next country would have 18, then 15, then 12 etc...

Russia is a leader, but not by too much because USSR power is now "spread" betwee many different countries.

Look on figure skating or gymnastics - Russia is still strong, but USSR was much stronger

I think zoobrenok is right. Russia isn't that strong as USSR was. But I think that's not bad, make it more interessting and exciting! :)
