Subject: Fischer Random Chess

Message:
What do you guys think about having the possibility playing FRC here on GK - like deciding whether to play a normal game of chess or a game FRC.

For those among you who do not exactly know the story of FRC - here is a link: www.chessvariants.com/diffsetup.dir/fischerh.html

I myself played it a lot since I first heard of it - and I enjoy it very, very much. No more opening theory... which means no use of databases would be possible... I guess some of you might feel happy about that :-)

So what is your opinion about that chess variant - and about the possibility to play it at GK - maybe we could ask Mike or Alex to implement that variant - it's definitely worth the effort.

Greetings cuthbert

I think that, in general, Fischer random chess is quite a good idea, and it's worth trying on this site. But before that, two issues need to be addressed:

1. Ratings. Will there be special ratings for Fischer chess, or will Fischer games affect the "regular" GK rating ? I personally don't mind either way, but a lot of players will object to the 2nd way, claiming that Fischer random is not "really chess", and Mike might object to the 1st way, which will require of him to maintain an extra set of ratings per player. Alternatively, Fischer games could just be made unrated.

2. Deleting games. Some players like (or dislike) particular configurations. Since here on GK there is a possibility to delete a game after 1-2 moves at no penalty, I see a potential point of abuse here. Of course, making all Fischer games unrated will solve this problem TOO - people will have no reason for such behavior in an unrated game.

So, yes, I am all for trying this - but at first only unrated...

I didn't think about these two issues...

1.Ratings. I don't think that an extra Fischer rating is needed - everyone is free to decide playing "normal" chess or FRC.

2.Deleting games. That might become a problem - but what about an additional statistic "# of deleted games" at the players profile... then you might avoid playing people with a high "# of deleted games".

I hope that some more people here on GK back up FRC - it's getting more and more popular - and it is a lot of fun!!

Lasker's tenacious defence — This game from the legendary 1914 St. Petersburg tournament shows a chess great at his best. RB: I like text as well as chess in my chess books, and The Joys of Chess by Christian Hesse (New in Chess) has plenty of both. It's a compendium, in the mould of earlier works like Fox and James's The Complete Chess Addict or Hooper and Whyld's Oxford Companion to Chess; it's the sixth and last nomination for our book of the year award. Hesse, a professor of mathematics, may not be a top-flight chess player, but he roves over his subject with the sharp eye of an avid collector. If it reads pedantically at times (Dan was aghast at the title, which he thought sounded like a bad translation from ...

I would very much like to be able to play FRC on gameknot, with a separate rating system. I have played a few games, and it seems to retain most of the beauty of regular chess while avoiding the tendency to play through well established opening lines.

Aggressive Strategy Pays Off at Women’s Grand Prix Event — Here’s a striking fact about the game of chess: There is only one woman ranked among the world’s top 100 players. There is no obvious reason for such a disparity in a purely intellectual game. One dubious explanation put forward over the years is that women are not as naturally aggressive as men and that successful chess requires frequent attacks. Yet in women-only chess events, a higher proportion of the games end in decisive finishes than they do at chess tournaments in which men participate. That has held true in the current Women’s Grand Prix series. The third tournament, which ended earlier this month in Nalchik, Russia, was dominated by Zhao Xue of China, who won 9 of her first 10 games before ...

I for one would love it!!!

Message:
Let's do it...It's the most popular chess-variant that will maybe even become mainstream someday...Fischer invented it because he was tired of how much chess had become a memory game....some grandmasters have worked out some of their opening theory well into the endgame...they don't even have to think much for the first 10-20 moves...

I would love to see random chess even surpass regular chess someday in popularity..no more 'book' moves, Just think about your moves at the board...errr...or the keyboard!

On Chess: Fischer figured he could draw with God — Bobby Fischer was renowned for his objectivity in regard to matters of chess. When confronted with the question of whether he could defeat God at chess, he immediately rejected the notion. Nevertheless, he insisted, “With White, I should be able to draw against him. I play e4 and, if we have a Ruy (Lopez opening), the position would be balanced, and I would never lose.” It might be relevant that religion was a lifelong passion for Fischer. His biographer, Frank Brady, noted that Fischer carried a Bible with him during his early years. It is, therefore, likely that he was familiar with the biblical story of Jacob wrestling with God before his fearful reunion with his brother Esau — whose birthright he had stolen — at ...

Vlad Kramnik holds his hoodoo over Judit Polgar — The phenomenon of the difficult opponent against whom you have poor results which create a psychological mountain is well known to many chess players. At top level, it can change careers and decide world-class chess events. Bobby Fischer often did badly against Ewfim Geller, which helped spark the American's failure in the 1962 candidates. Garry Kasparov found Vlad Kramnik tough, and eventually lost his world title to the younger Russian. The all-time best woman Judit Polgar has proved herself the equal or superior of dozens of the top men. But she struggled against Kasparov, including in an infamous game where he retracted a knight move, and she also has a large minus total against ...

ABOUT FISCHER RANDOM CHESS?

Iranian, Refusing to Play Israeli, Expelled From Chess Tournament — One of Iran’s top chess grandmasters was expelled from an international chess tournament on Tuesday after he refused to play a match against an Israeli opponent, the director of the tournament said. The Iranian, Ehsan Ghaem Maghami, was scheduled to play Ehud Shachar in the fourth round of the Corsica Masters, a pairing determined by computer. The director, Léo Battesti, said in a telephone interview that Mr. Maghami had asked him to change the pairing, but was told that doing so would violate chess tournament rules. Mr. Maghami then failed to appear at the scheduled time to play Mr. Shachar. Mr. Battesti said Mr. Maghami should have told him beforehand that he would object to ...

GREAT!

Message:
So what we would need is
- a seperate rating system
- the option to choose between these two variants

Looks like some work on the server scripts...

What about asking Alex / Mike to put that matter to the next GK poll - so all members can vote about that.

Other sites have it too - and there is no reason why we shouldn't give it a try.

But just the number of posts shows that only a few people are interested in it... nevertheless I'll send a message to Mike and ask what he thinks about it.
