Subject: Analyse the board feature

Message:
I'm interested in what the higher rated players think of this feature.
I've started using it as an aid to calculation & have begun to rely on it in the endgame. I feel this may not be a good habit to get into for OTB games where it's just you & your head.

Does anyone else think this? Do the top GK players make use of this?

Cheers.

An OTB game and a correspondence game (or a "turn-based game", as they sometimes call it here) are two different things entirely.

If you want to play the games here on GK "as if" they were OTB games, that's up to you. But I feel you'd be missing much on the specific experience of a correspondence game - ie. being able to consider moves at your leisure, shuffle some pieces around, and making a move only when you're absolutely certain it's the best one.

My advice to you - don't put handicaps on yourself. Just do your best to succeed in any given game. And here on GK, it means analyzing the board properly.... who knows, maybe you'll discover some amazing combinations you would have missed otherwise ?!

Ivanchuk, Carlsen Lead at Amber — Rapid chess and blindfold chess require different skills. But excelling at both is a prerequisite for victory at the annual Amber Chess Tournament, the most unusual event of the year. Amber is sponsored by Joop van Oosterom, a Dutch billionaire and world correspondence chess champion, who started the tournament in 1992 and named it after his daughter. With a generous prize fund (this year 216,000 euros, or a little less than $300,000), an invitation to the tournament is coveted by the world’s top chess players. (It does not hurt that the tournament is held in Nice, France, on the Côte d’Azur.) This year’s field is made up of ...

Can Karpov Be President of Chess Federation? — The former world chess champion Anatoly Karpov announced on Saturday that he was running for president of the World Chess Federation. Karpov is trying to unseat Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, who has been president of the federation (known as FIDE, its initials in French), since 1995. Ilyumzhinov is also the president of Kalmykia, a small Russian republic on the Caspian Sea. The federation president is elected for a five-year term, and there is no limit on how many times he (or she) can be re-elected. Karpov would not be the first ex-champion to serve as FIDE’s president. Max Euwe, the fifth world chess champion (1935-37), led the federation from 1970-78, a period of exceptional ...

Enter the dragon — David Howell was one move away from a fine victory in the eighth round of the European Individual Chess Championships at Rijeka in Croatia but a blunder on the last move of the time control gave his opponent Laurent Fressinet of France the full point. Howell also nearly won his ninth round game but was just foiled in the endgame. Michael Adams was lucky to hold a draw with the white pieces against Romain Edouard, a young French GM who impressed at Hastings. Adams was close to lost but after a time scramble he emerged a pawn down in a rook ending where all the pawns were on the kingside and ...

The f-pawn, part 5: is this a good position to push forward? — It it time for black to use his f-pawn as a battering ram? We saw last week that advancing the f-pawn can leave you horribly exposed at the back if the attack stalls. Here Black has removed the knight from f6, clearing the way for the battering ram. Is it wise to advance the pawn to f5? RB When playing against 1 d4 I will often go for a Nimzo-Indian (as in the present chess game) or King's Indian. I have a liking for the kind of kingside attack that can arise – with certain key differences obviously – from both defences. With the centre safely closed, Black has ...

am i missing something?

Message:
When I click on "analyze the board" a separate
window comes up with a board containing the
current position in the game. There are
buttons below the board which allow me to replay
the moves of the game. But I cannot move
the pieces around and try out future lines of
play. It seems as though the people in this
thread are talking as if this is possible.
Am I missing something? Or am I misunderstanding
the conversation? Or perhaps this is a feature
for paying members only?

Chess Grandmasters are getting younger — Richard Rapport of Hungary just completed the requirements to become a chess grandmaster at age 13 years, 11 months, 15 days, the fifth-youngest ever. A thrilling accomplishment, no doubt. But chess fans have grown numb to the exploits of adolescent wonders. The inimitable Bobby Fischer stunned the world by becoming a grandmaster in 1958 at age 15 years, 6 months, a record that lasted until 1991. In the last two decades, though, 23 chess players have surpassed Fischer's mark. Sergey Karjakin, the Ukraine star who now plays for Russia, holds the current record at 12 years, 7 months. The World Chess Federation's March rating list includes ...

nope

Message:
It's a standard feature.
It seems to work a bit more slowly then the main game interface but you can click on any piece & then click anywhere else & it'll put that piece down there. It's a board setup interface so it doesn't understand legal moves. Give it another go!

Zdrak - good point - I guess I'm trying to use GK for OTB practice but it's not really like that given the timescales involved. I fear not being able to analyse though if I get lazy with this feature. It's sort of the opposite to learning to play blind!

Cheers.

still doesn't work

Message:
Well, thanks for the information bullmoose.
Unfortunately, this feature does not work
for me. clicking on the pieces has no effect
(even after several minutes of waiting).
I wonder what the problem is. Everything else
on the site seems to work fine for me.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

Analyzing

Message:
Well, if you decide to use gameknot for OTB practice, that's your decision. You will probably improve more in OTB if you don't use the analyze the board feature and just look at the board. However, if your goal is to win games on gameknot, then I suggest not only using this feature, but setting up the position on a chessboard and moving the pieces around. I *always* analyze correspondence / turn-based games on an actual chess board.

Message:
I do not use that feature as I think it as help and it's better for me as a chessplayer to analyze in my head. It's amazing how quick you can adapt a position and think about it in your head- with a little practise of course.

click on the piece..wait..the piece chosen should show a 'red square' outline..then you can move it..click on the square you want to place it.
Always wait for the designated piece to become outlined in red....if it doesn't..something wrong...contact webmaster.

If your connection is slow this could be your problem. I used to have quite a delay waiting for the 'red square' when useing a phone line connection. Cable now...works like a charm
Hope this helps.

When I got a free moment I replay a game in my head. It can be while shopping in the store, cooking etc etc. The hardest part is to transact text into images, at least that is what I think.

After a while you can start to recognize positions in your head which also helps you OTB a lot.

Hey - think I've cracked the problem

Message:
CertainRatio - I use Mozilla which is very similar to Netscape. There's an option to allow java script to 'change images' (in Mozilla it's under Edit/Preferences/Advanced/Scripts and Plugins).
If this is not set (which it may not be if you're using high security options) then the Analyse Board feature won't let you change anything - if this is enabled it works fine.

Hope this helps.
