Chess on US TV Strange but true: game 6 of Kasparov-DJ will be broadcast nationally live on ESPN2 from 3:30-7:00 ET today (Feb 7).

Thanks Kepler for the heads up! Would have missed it otherwise. This doesn't happen very often, (especially on TV)so it will be interesting to watch.

oh no! well... too bad i can't see it

Is chess a sport? I guess ESPN has resolved this quandry, which has been the subject of previous forum threads.
buddy2 27 ( +1 | -1 )
thanks kepler. I only wish i'd known about it earlier. i could have made an announcement at my chess club. on reason chess isn't noticed, because it gets ZERO publicity. Didn't Marx say TV was the opiate of the masses. Or was it rap music. Not sure. Hmmm.
gambitnut 15 ( +1 | -1 )
Kepler Is that 12:30 or 3:30 here in Portland? Is this a new change? I looked at the guide on my TV and it listed other shows as coming up on ESPN2. Are you sure about this?
gambitnut 4 ( +1 | -1 )
It's on! Najdorf Sicilian, Junior played Be2.
kepler 19 ( +1 | -1 )
Could someone post the moves after 5. ESPN has not been doing a good job of reporting and the realtime sites are swamped. (Alternatively, if you have a site that does moves, hey...)

Somehow, my wishes are with Garry. Unusual, normally I'm not a kind of 'fan' besides the love I feel for the famous and best soccer team ever: 1.FC Köln.

Go Garry go.
kepler 9 ( +1 | -1 )
It helps that GK is a worthwhile guy to root for. It would be a little different if he were a pr1ck...
bartlebie 28 ( +1 | -1 )
I hope you are able to follow the game at the moment. Here are the moves after 12. a4 b6
13. Qd3 Bb7

gambitnut, where are you posting from? I'm out right on the Beaverton-Hillsboro line.
kepler 21 ( +1 | -1 )
Yes, I am now watching on www.x3dworld.com/Entertainment/chessMVM/DGT/Flash/broadcast.html although there is a lag.
gambitnut 28 ( +1 | -1 )
I'm in southeast Portland If you are looking for a place to play OTB chess, I often play on saturdays art the Greek Orthodox Church at 32nd and Glisan. The chess is in the back of the building from 11am to 6 pm.

By the way, I applied several days ago to be a Wild Attacker and haven't heard back yet, is there a waiting list?
kepler 9 ( +1 | -1 )
No, Anish is probably backlogged. I'll post to him.

Do you play over at the Portland Chess Club?
gambitnut 8 ( +1 | -1 )
No I was a member and I've been over there a few times but the bathroom isn't wheelchair accessible.

I'm really enjoying watching this on ESPN2! It's great to see chess on tv, ESPN even! Yasser Seriwan and Maurice Ashley are giving great analysis and even Jeremy Schaap seems to know something about chess!
kepler 20 ( +1 | -1 )
He knew e4 c5 was a Sicilian, anyway. ;-)

Schaap (like his dad) is a fellow Cornell alum, so it's good to see him doing this. Of course, I'd prefer it if the hockey game against Dartmouth were on ESPN2 afterwards! ;-)
kepler 5 ( +1 | -1 )
Woohoo! Garry goes for the throat!!!! Rxc3!
gambitnut 7 ( +1 | -1 )
It sure took him a long time! I wonder if he will tell us what he was thinking after the game.
kepler 3 ( +1 | -1 )
After

24. Pxc3 Be4

we get

25. Bc1

interesting.
kepler 3 ( +1 | -1 )
25... Bxg2
26. Kxg2 Rxc3
kepler 10 ( +1 | -1 )
According to X3D, Kasparov offered a draw after 26... Rxc3 !?

There is a thought that maybe he is ill.
kepler 6 ( +1 | -1 )
Rather it was 23 ...Rxc3

THAT'S what he was thinmijg about!
kepler 0 ( +1 | -1 )
27. Ba3 Ne8
gambitnut 16 ( +1 | -1 )
What??!!? He has way too much play to offer a draw. It sounds like it was the computer's team, not the computer who declined. They must think they can still win. I wonder why.
kepler 11 ( +1 | -1 )
28. f4

is an attack on the e pawn; in combination with Ba3 white is suddenly looking alive.

GK has 37 minutes for his next 13 moves.
gambitnut 11 ( +1 | -1 )
It's a draw!! What was wrong with Kasparov? Why did the computer's team offer a draw so fast after declining one?
kepler 11 ( +1 | -1 )
But now he needs no time, because they agree to a draw despite a very interesting position.

Wusses. :-(
calmrolfe 17 ( +1 | -1 )
What is he playing at ? !! Gary was holding all the shots....why offer a draw ? There was only ever going to be one winner from that position, the game was there for Black's taking.

the draw is a disappointment… but to see chess live on television in the USA… well, I have
agents out in the field right now checking to see if hell has
indeed frozen over.

wait… a pig just flew by my window.
gambitnut 15 ( +1 | -1 )
honololou Let me know when your agents get back. That would explain it! I hope this trend continues even more in the future.

I'm heading out now to the Greek Orthodox Church Don't worry, you don't have to be Greek or Orthodox to play there. You just have to love chess! I hope to see some Gameknot players there!
gambitnut 5 ( +1 | -1 )
In case anyone missed it the first time ... ... the game is going to be reaired on ESPN2 on March 5th at 2:30 ET.
